Thank you for this thorough yet concise clarification of the most important Resolve settings. As an immigrant to DaVinci Resolve I wondered how the software will handle the generated data in the " Working Folders " we set for projects that require multiple versions? One would assume the generated proxy media and Cache Files will be over written during subsequent versions of the same project ( coming from the same camera files ).
@writedirect

Hey! I'm sorry...thought I responded to your question. When you save "versions" of the project, how are you versioning? The working folders are project specific. I personally only version timelines and then do project exports for manual full backups. Both of these don't affect proxy or cache media.

@@writedirect Clever workflow again. There is so much to learn in DaVinci Resolve. Looking forward to take your classes. I shoot cDNG, so my camera files are called " unwanted " in those other NLE. Thank you for the insight.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I typically edit using proxies and then switch over to camera originals when it's time to color correct. Should I still set up my RAW settings the same as you mentioned in the first half of your tutorial, or should some settings be changed?
@writedirect
2 ай бұрын
Hey Juan...technically you don't have to mess with the RAW settings. I need to update that video, but the camera raw area in project settings is a way to override the metadata in the camera raw files. So even if you leave it at ARRI and have BRAW you're fine. You can read about this in the Resolve 18 manual.

With Live Save activated, it won't prompt you. But Live Save is a crucial feature to have on IMO. The settings is under Preferences > User > Project Save and Load > Save Settings > Live Save. You can turn that off and see if it prompts. But if there's a crash, you''ll lose work.

Hi and thank you for this helpful tutorial. What kind of anamorphic lens u used in this video and settings? I also shot anamorphic with a BMPCC4K and a Sirui 35mm 1.33. Do I have to set the timline resolution in DCI Scope 2.39 or will my cam translate the right information to Davinci if i chosse Anamorphic 1.33 in the camera settings? Thank you allready for an answer and regards Roger
@writedirect

My class instruction videos are obviously normal UHD but for narrative filming I'm using Sirui anamorphic lenses all the way! On Pocket 4Ks they are the 1.33 like you're talking about. I've used the 24mm and 50mm on the Pockets and then 50mm Venus on the CC6K. Yes on timeline resolution for what you're doing. The lens does not communicate to the camera. So in Resolve you have to right-click on the clips and under the clip properties, set them to 1.33x anamorphic. Hope that helps!

@@r.h.6581 Resolve is very easy-going with timeline resolutions. You can be halfway through a project and change it without any major repercussions. So you could flip between 2.39 scope and UHD as many times as you want. It’s basically just the Delivery Page when you have to finally decide.

Two questions: What is the difference between saving the location of the Resolve project itself vs all your footage? Do you have suggestions on a hearty sized external drive that will handle these BRAW sized projects? I'm on Mac M1 Max and have a couple Western Digital drives that are getting on in years.
@writedirect

1) The project can be on your local computer because it’s not a big I/O drain. But you can save it anywhere-It really doesn’t matter. Media will fill up your local drive fast (obviously) and effect performance. 2) I use G-Raid enclosures. I have 3, 4 drive raid arrays. Connect them with a Corning thunderbolt fiber optic cable to keep editorial quiet. Works beautifully. You can get some killer open box deals on eBay for the drives if you look. Hope that helps!

Hello! Thank you for your videos. Just finished filming my first movie. It was shot on my Sony a6400 on HLG2 and the Color Mode was set on BT.2020. Any chance you could help me choose the right settings for Input Color Space and Timeline Color Space? Thank you in advance!
@writedirect
7 ай бұрын
Hey! I have never used that camera. But HLG2 and BT.2020 are HDR so your timeline color space should be DWG. But your input color space - I’m not sure on that. And if you don’t have the hardware required for accurate HDR monitoring your output needs to be Rec709. I’m about to post some new lessons on all of this soon.

On 3:01 , I have an M1 Mac, so do I still have to save to an external? This is solid information, it s the most important before beginning any project and missed by other DaVinci Resolve posted tutorials I have a Resolve users group, I will share your video and channel to them. Thanks.

Thank you for your comment and share! I always save copies of my project and Resolve database to an external drive. That way if one system crashes everything is lost. My M1 Mac has been very stable. But anything can tank on you. My advice is that if you would cry if you lost it, back it up somewhere else. Lol.

8:11 - What is the difference between ticks "Hide UI overlays" and "Minimize interface updates..."? It seems the description is the same for both, but I guess they're not the same... What did they mean under "interface updates"?
@writedirect
7 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry for my late reply on this. All I can do is reference the manual, and the distinction between the two is small. The hide UI option does exactly what it states, and that's supposed to help an under powered GPU a tad. The "Minimize Interface Updates..." isn't hiding anything, but rather PRIORITIZING the real time playback over any UI updates. So one is hiding controls and the other is giving top priority to playback vs any in app updates or refreshes that are happening...but I'm hazy on what those updates would actually be.
@tatsutakamaro
7 ай бұрын
@writedirect Indeed, I'm hazy either on those updates :) But I got the idea now, thank you. With your explaination all have become clear now. Thanks a lot.

where is the difference between saving project manually and exporting (saving) my project manually?
@writedirect
4 ай бұрын
Good question. When you export the project, you can export it to a separate location. Like an external drive. That way everything is located on one system. When you do project saves it’s saving to your current project. Which is probably on your computer.

I haven’t used that camera, and not sure if they provide any type of color space transform. But it looks like they provide a LUT to use, which is a little different process. And not sure if it depends on whether you shot in standard, vivid, or log mode. But here’s the link from their site: onlinemanual.insta360.com/pro1/en-us/video/postproduction/8
