Fantastic piece. It’s so “Russian” and it is wonderful to watch the hands moving over the keyboard to produce this. Thank you, LC.

A wonderful document from an era when he wasn't obscuring his talent with self destructive parody. Thank you!

You mean his severe arthritis? I never thought of that as being just a form of parody. It is pretty destructive though, both physically and mentally.

@@j.vonhogen9650 His arthritis caused him to sight read nocturnes and intermezzi at half speed with no discernable pulse and yet wasn't so painful for him to avoid programming petrushka, brahms-paganini variations and transcendental etudes in recent years? A peculiar arthritis indeed!

@@1fattyfatman - Well, maybe you should talk to his doctor and ask him about the nature of Pogorelich's disability before you might risk spreading disinformation. Or maybe you are his personal psysician, in which case I will of course accept your expert judgement. My information only comes from Pogorelich himself and his agent.

@@1fattyfatman - Thanks for your kind comment and sorry for the sarcasm, but I didn't really know how to respond, since it was obvious to me that you admired his playing when he was still in good shape/health. I just want to add that I'm not in the position to defend Pogorelich in any way, but what I do know about famous pianists in general, is that they are usually being booked by concert managers years prior to their performance and that they have to deliver no matter what. If they don't, they may lose money due to the costs of replacement, program change, announcements, etcetera. It's not enough to just add a clause in the contract with the hiring concert management, since it's often the concert halls themselves that book the high profile artists directly for their most prestigious concert series. Only Martha Argerich and Michelangeli used to get a pass for their frequent last-minute cancellations, because at certain moments in their respective careers, they cancelled more concerts than they actually showed up for. Just imagine buying a concert ticket for a Pogorelich recital, and then have to sit through a recital by Lang Lang as a replacement! 😱 I would rather listen to Pogorelich playing at 0.1x speed than having to endure that kind of torture! Anyway, let us enjoy this video and remember Pogorelich for his impressive playing in the 1980s and 1990s. I personally hope he will still be around for many more years. He really is a great guy!
