For me the vintage Oscar Schmidt harp sounds the sweetest, maybe because of its age. The Americana is week in the bass region, but it sounds amplified great and well balanced. I think it is built like an half-accoustic guitar in order to avoid feedback on stage. The good thing is that you can practice without driving the neighbors nuts.

My own experience with modern OS instruments, vs vintage instruments vs d'Aigle and other luthier instruments completely substantiates this demonstration. I didn't even need the Sennheiser studio headphones I put on to listen to the demo, a paper cup and string would have been enough to hear the difference. In person, it is even more pronounced than what comes across in this video. Thanks for the demo, Hal, I think it helps folks to learn what's the state of affairs out in the world of autoharps.

I have a beautiful 1975 Appalachian sunburst. Oh, is she gorgeous! She fits just right in my arms, & sings so mellow. I sure love her! She was gifted to me by my hard working dad. We were farm people, & a single income family of 10. But, I had music in me, & he loved that so much. Thanks, daddy for your sacrifice & love. We've been making beautiful music!

A true comparison would be for you to build a $600 autoharp. I play guitar and have seen very few people with a $3000 guitar in 50 years of playing. What has kept many guitar companies successful is their building quality instruments at an affordable price. They didn’t succeed by talking down less expensive instruments.

Remember that the Oscar's are being built overseas with comprimised parts and underpaid labor. Like everything else, the difference shows. We can't make a 600 dollar harp.

@@wildautoharp I appreciate your thinking and love the sound of your autoharps but I won’t be able to afford one. I love your lessons.

You can complain about the clicks, but not about the scratch of the picks. I play bare fingered and It makes a completely different sound.

I do too, mostly....but I've been playing a long time and it's not always been that way. But now, yes...except for my thumb...I always wear a very thick thumb pick. The thickness takes the scratch out and gives warm bass tone that is of a similar volume to my fingers. If I didn't have nails, however, then I'd be using plastic picks. In my opinion it's the method of pulling out when plucking, rather than "raking" that best mitigates the scratchies. That works well with picks or without. "Pulling" the strings instead of raking them can bring the option of picks back to the table....and picks make "patting" possible in the player's pallete of sounds....patting doesn't work without picks.

So Hal, you really think is OK to compare a $3000. Autoharp to a $600. one? REALLY? Money talks, bullshit walks

What’s amazing about the Tahoma is that, for that lovely sound, the Beginners Package, which includes a Tahoma, soft case, Snark tuner, tuning wrench, etc, the total package price is $1535! So it’s not $3k vs $600.

I don't think the sounds coming from the 500 dollar harp are worth 500 given the defective workmanship. And it sounds just like their $300 models. It also weighs almost 10 pounds. But it's my job to educate on what people aren't aware of if they buy sound unheard, so yes I compare the comparable options. But you said it yourself for me: there's no comparison. Actually, I'm doing this comparison for the sake of the many customers who ask for such a comparison, so they can quantify by ear the margin between the two investments. We can refer them to this when they can't come in and play one themselves.

I keep clicking on the Beginner's Package link and it always says "404 Page Not Found."
I am new to autoharps. I just got my OS 21 chord chromatic like the one you demo. I don't know what is wrong with it but I really can't get any volume out of it. It sounds muted somehow. Can hardly hear it. I've arranged to return it (25% restocking fee, BTW) but I'll probably be contacting you to get one with some tone and a little volume in the near future because I really want one.
