In this video, I propagate some crape myrtles from a tree I have in my front yard. I don't typically like Crape Myrtle's but this one has beautiful bright red blooms. Since I'd love to add a few more to my yard, I decided to propagate them.
You can make your own propagation box if you'd like but using the premade box was so much easier for me. If you like the box, be sure to use the link below to help me out.
You want to clip branches off your plant and make sure to cut them below right below a leaf node and rip all the leaves off except for a couple. You don't have to add a rooting hormone, but it helps. The one I used could be bought just about anywhere.
Fill up your propagation box with coarse sand. You can use play sand from home depot, but I find it doesn't drain well, and is easier to drown the cuttings in. Thoroughly wet the sand all the way through. Don't have standing water but just make sure it's all been wetted. I have holes drilled in the bottom so water doesn't ever just sit in there.
Once you have the sand in the box moist but not soaking, and the cuttings are ready, you can simply stick them in the sand. Put the box in indirect light (shade but still has light around it). Mist it if it gets dry but don't ever put too much water in it.
You should have roots in a month or so. Happy propagating :).
