thanks! is it the tip of the tongue that moves up and down or do I anchor the tip down and bend the middle?

The way I play and teach, the tip of the tongue is what moves and creates the articulation. However, many successful players and teachers use the middle of the tongue. What you have described is called "anchor tonguing" or "dorsal tonguing." It is not as common, but is used frequently.

Hello Dr. Shook, I've been playing 15 years but my 16th note single tongue is stuck at 88 bpm. I've used the Gekker articulation book and tried Clarke exercises, and worked with a metronome for weeks and weeks, but no progress. Any suggestions?

Work on flutter tonguing to loosen up the tongue, then alternate flutter tonging and tonguing 16th notes. Eventually, the tongue will get quicker. Also, some people just have a slow single tongue. In that case, start working on your double tongue so that you can use that slow and fast to close the gap on the speeds between single and double so that your fastest single tongue is faster than your slowest double tongue--then you will never get caught in between!

I have been playing for 8 months and I can still only just slur into a middle D. When I try to really think about tongue arch for example when going from middle c to middle e , the tone changes but the pitch doesn't and I feel like less air is being used. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE HELP ME CAUSE I'M GOING CRAZY, I just want to move on and focus more on playing the dang thing, like anything else but lip slurs !

the arch concept is hard. I can tongue, becasue its the tip....but i usually will think about pinching the lips for higher notes, now i am finding myself thinking about the position of my tongue while i go higher. Kind a mess up my setup sometimes. Worst part is we cant see your tongue. p.s i am a recovering beginner trumpet player

I find that’s it helps to visualize something in your head, find a visual that matches that concept to you. I like to think about a tea kettle, the pressure inside is what makes the whistle happen when it gets hot. There’s a constant and consistent fast stream of air

I taught myself how to do lip trills by using the Earl D. Irons "27 Groups of Exercises" book. Best one on the market!

I don't get it. I press down on my mouthpiece hard. My tongue arch just makes things worse.

You need to keep you face relaxed. Try not to press your mouthpiece hard.

im trying the tongue arch thing to hit like a high c but i still have so much trouble there. Even with the arch, It still feels like im using way too much pressure and air to even try to hit it. Im not sure if im arching right but it doesnt seem to be making much of a difference. Do you have any other tips?

It takes some time to develop the technique and muscles. Keep at it, it should get easier after awhile!
