Waikiki is cool once you move here for the first few months, but then realize everything kind of sucks if you LIVE in Waikiki, mainly cuz you are always treated as a tourist. The service workers at the bars aren’t that motivated to have conversations or build rapport with locals, especially if you aren’t a service worker like they are, since most of their clientele are tourists that are only here for a few days… Just everything feels a little fake after a while, I am starting to miss NYC because of it. I’m in desperate need to find genuine people, and it’s hard to come by here. Most people in my complex are retired or Airbnb, which is fine and everyone is nice but if you don’t mind being around service industry people who don’t like you, or meeting new people everyday who are nice but will be gone by the end of the week, and don’t mind being in a retirement community, which most of Waikiki is, then this place is for you. Also Hawaii is mostly old buildings and a huge cockroach problem, we have roaches called b-52’s that fly here… If you move here make sure to find something with air conditioning and no jalousie windows, and no cockroach problem… you have been warned. Also take the bus!! The bus system is amazing good and cheap in town.. only $80 a month or $30 a week for a holo card for unlimited rides. All the busses are really clean and have great air conditioning and can take the bus all over the island into and out of town until 10pm everyday.

Waikiki is not Downtown. Downtown is where the federal buildings are at and in Kaka'ako, Chinatown. Waikiki is like South Beach. Brickell/Downtown Miami is to Kaka'ako and Downtown Honolulu

You nailed it. Living in Waikiki is like living on Hollywood Boulevard. Seems fun and exciting until it’s not. Crime/homeless is also something to consider. If anyone asks for poke recommendations, send them to Ono Seafood😉

Thanks(Mahalos! ) Grew up in Honolulu, Punchbowl -UpperMakiki … But I’ve been away for most of my adult life. (13 years in California, Almost 18 in Asia.) Thanks for the feel of Waikiki. It’d be nice to retire back where I grew up, someday. Much Mahalos!

If I lived on Oahu, I feel like I’d just own a moped or motorcycle instead of a car since it seems so congested and i heard finding parking can be very difficult in the Honolulu area.

I’m more wondering about the social life, not so much commutes, restaurants, bars, prices, for that I’m not so concerned. I want to know if I will be socially isolated because I am a white mainlander.

No. You won’t be socially isolated. Don’t believe the negativity on social media.

Informative video as always. By the way, I ate at the restaurant you passed at 3:50 in the video…really mediocre pizza, can’t say what the rest of the menu is like.

Surprised to see this negative comment. We ate at Appetito Restaurant when we recently stayed in Oahu and we enjoyed the pizza. My husband is from Northern Italy and we can vouch that the pizza was authentic Neapolitan pizza. Other items on the menu were good as well. I'd recommend this place, but to each his own. Aloha~
