+Sarah Alexander Thank you. It's words of encouragement like this that keep us going with making videos. We are learning (and making mistakes) one step at a time, and it's gratifying to know that our experiences are helping others. And we wouldn't be CONTENT with where we are without Jesus in our lives. If we can share just a little bit of that truth, we have accomplished our goal.

I appreciate this video, thank you both for sharing! It's one thing to know about the challenges, but what makes me resolved to face them, now at 28 years old, is hearing about it from people who are actually facing them. You are so helpful, I never thought it was beneficial not to collect or decorate as much as my other girlfriends. It almost feels like i'm not a woman if I don't do those things. After living in a studio for 2 years near my office, I don't have anything up on my walls, and I just have a bed, table, and sideboard for furniture. I'm content the way I am, but now I actually feel good about the way I am. Thank you, this helps me resolve investing in a tiny house.

You can then create a backup on a portable USB drive and always have two copies of all your documents...just a thought...please keep sharing...love seeing how God gives you guys ideas...only thing I can add is that it sure is huge that Bill is a carpenter...:)

When I was growing up our family of 5 lived in a camper much smaller than yours with no bathroom (out house only) and we got our water by bringing in buckets from the hand pump. When I was 13 my dad finally had enough money to by a shell for a house. Today, I live in a beautiful house because my husband ran a successful business till we retired. But I told him... if we would somehow lose everything tomorrow, I would be ok, because I know how to live with very little and still be content....

When you brought out your Bible I choked up and praised God for your wisdom, experience, generosity, honesty and transparency. You are to humble to admit this but, you are shining role models in so many ways...relationship, moderation, sacrifices, adapting, growing and finding balance. Thank you for being so candid and open. We had our little retirement home leased out.it’s a few houses down from my daughter and grandson...it was paid for...we had no bills except for our larger house that we still have a mortgage on...and we planned to downsize when my husband retired..we were on our way and then hurricane Harvey happened...we had never flooded in our neighborhood...not in a flood zone...but we flooded...had to get an SBA loan and now have mortgages on both houses...just goes to show that your plans and effort aren’t always guaranteed with good results...I just pray that we will be ok financially for the rest of our lives..maybe 20 years max...the houses in this area had appreciated before the storm...maybe they will comeback...all the neighborhood has worked hard to get our houses back in shape....helping each other as well...so we may keep the big house, just as an investment..and lease it out..real estate is still the safest ...imo. Even with this bad storm..I don’t regret having these houses...rent has skyrocketed in the Houston area since the flood...so many motels don’t even have rooms available because they are filled with Hurricane Harvey people...if need be..our grown kids and grandkids could move in w us...it would be tight but it’s doable a you never know when it might be the only answer..as in a catastrophe or natural disaster....still..I think I’d love to live in a motor home full time and travel around ...that would be so much fun...the older I get the less important it is to have lots of things...clothes, jewelry. Etc. etc...the only thing I’ve had a hard time letting go of is dishes..I love vintage dishes but I do want to get rid of a large percentage of our “stuff”

It's a joy to see the love you have for one another in all your videos. I learned a lot from this one and I think many of us could benefit maybe not from official "tiny houses" but maybe something in between the mansions we feel compelled to own and a tiny house. How about a new category of houses called semi-tiny where you've got maybe 400-800 square feet. I live in a small cape that's around 1100 sq ft and for awhile I kept thinking I should move up to something larger but now I"m rethinking that.
@LiveSimpleLiveFree
7 жыл бұрын
I agree. Technically, a tiny house is anything under 400 sq ft (because building codes don't apply), but anyone can benefit from any kind of downsizing. A 700 sq ft two bedroom is a considerable downsize for someone who moves out of a 2500 sq ft home. There are many benefits to downsizing.

I wish I could tell you this in person because thanks to you both I have made a big change in my life. You both have touched my heart. Everyday I find myself thinking about the way you live, the words you’ve spoken. My faith has increased and I find myself wanting to live the day being the best person I can be and I look at you Elizabeth and I want to follow your example. I’m blessed with a wonderful husband that loves me more than life itself. I’ve certainly have had and still have my trials. Two and a half years ago I was suddenly struck with illness. Gillain Barre. It left me paralyzed for a time. Over these last two years I found myself often depressed and sad. I be always known God has a plan for me and that I am experiencing this for a reason. I’m now on crutches. I’m so thankful for that. It’s been a long hard struggle and somewhere along the way it became harder and harder to press forward. But God has touched my heart through the two of you. I’ve watched all of your videos and I’ve started to read scriptures again. I’m told that somewhere in time I should make a nearly complete recovery. But recovery is slow. And often as I struggle to find balance even with the crutches I get discouraged. Elizabeth you have helped me to remember to put God first and to keep my faith in him. You are an example of what a woman of God should be. How can I ever thank you for what you’ve done. I worry that you may not read this comment. It’s that important for me to thank you. I pray you will get this message.

regarding keeping papers, filing, I've found cam scanner with android very helpful. take a picture, secure as needed, then when u need it it will print to nearest printer with printer share app. wireless or with usb, cloud, whatever works. this has been helpful for me. can place all papers alike in folders. like any system however, paper or virtual it still needs maintenance periodically, and cleaning out records no longer needed.

I am now in your situation, or the one you were in 2008 - I work for a company who just laid off over 10,000 employees. I have a choice to move to a new state but we don't want to go there and can't actually go due to family issues, or leave the company, so we are leaving at the end of the year and I have to find a new job that will likely pay less money, so we are downsizing out bills, but not house yet (although it may come to that). However, in your video here you mentioned that you got rid of DVDs. We have hundreds of DVDs, and now BluRays. There's media converters out there so we got a cheap one (and they have free one's like HandBrake) and converted hundreds of movies and TV shows over time to mp4; we have the original DVDs still, just have a digital copy. When you buy DVD's now they often have a digital version you download that you can add to your media library as well, and we use PLEX media server to stream them to all TVs and devices in our house. I know, very geeky. There's also a service called Vudu (www.vudu.com) where you take your DVDs (yeah, I know you got rid of them) to WalMart and for like $2 each (I think) they add them to your Vudu account and typically Vudu has an app on smart TVs like yours. And there's also Sling TV, www.sling.com, that's $20 a month and you get 20 popular cable TV channels like HGTV, TBS, History, AMC, ESPN, things like that. For $30 you get more channels. You can check if your smart TV has a Sling TV app; anyway, you can watch a KZitem Video that shows and reviews Sling TV to see how it works, kzitem.info/news/bejne/rauD0XiHoZOSdWU. It's a no-contract service so if you don't like it cancel and you're just out $20. Anyway, love your videos. We have 6 in our house including my 85 year old handicap mother so I don't think we can fit into an RV or tiny house. God will take care of us so my worry is not as great as others, I just hate interviewing for jobs.

My wife and I have a huge collection of movies we put them into the small (not super thin) jewel cases that CD's come in to compress the size they take up. It still filled a homemade shelving system I built that is 7 feet tall and 9 feet wide and has13 rows of cases with just a few empty slots. I bought a computer program that rips the video and makes MP4 out of them and store them on 3 1/2" computer hard drives 1, 1.5, 2 Terabytes, I currently have 9 such HD's. When SSD's or flash drives get large enough I will transfer them. The idea is to compress the footprint of all our movies so we don't loose them. We downsized from 1600+ Sq Ft down to 840 Sq Ft (14x60 mobile home) and plan to further downsize to 384 Sq ft (12x32 frame tiny house).

At our age, we have been talking about we've got to get rid of this mess before we kick off so our daughter won't have to deal with all the mess.

My car is 22 years old, bought it when it was 4 years old...my sister gets angry asking why don't you buy a new car? My answer is I am blessed to have my car, I love it, it runs well still...so why replace it? When I finally NEED to buy a new vehichle, I will have it for decades! 🙂

You didn't donate your books to the library? They would've loved them. You could've also donated them to Goodwill, Salvation Army and even schools.

We tried to donate them MANY places, including Goodwill and Salvation Army. Nobody would take them! Tnhey say they don't sell anymore. With the advent of ebooks, no one is reading hard copy books anymore. That's why several large national book store chains have gone out of business.

Tinyhouse Prepper Oh I see, I misunderstood. I thought in the video you meant that you just threw them out because you had to prepare quickly to move.

Wow Bill, that was a little rude, "can I move on" to Elizabeth. I notice Elizabeth has to constantly say "I appreciate it", meaning what Bill has built for her. You guys are very scripted, not necessary, you look like you get angry when Elizabeth goes off scrip now and then. Lighten up. I hope you're not offended by what I've said, these are things that I've observed.

No, we are TOTALLY unscripted, and I never get angry at her for going off script. How can I when there isn't a script? We just talk about it ahead of time - what our general topic will be. Then we just "wing it" with no script or outline. Sorry you misinterpreted my comment as being rude. The way I said it was a joke and we play off of each other like that all the time. I mainly just wanted to make sure she was done because I didn't want to cut her off if she wasn't finished yet. And Elizabeth doesn't HAVE to say "I appreciate it" all the time. She says it because she DOES appreciate it.

Jesus said to take up your cross and follow me, Luke 9:23, the son of a carpenter who measured twice and cut once. Joshua weighed food in Egypt for the known world, including Israel for the 7 years of plenty and 7 years of famine. There was no need for cannibalism. There is no place in the Bible saying to stop weighing food. I don't know about the Thrive food. It must be weighed. 1 John 2: 1-2, Jesus is our Advocate and the symbol of the Advocate/lawyer is the food scale!

The Bible says it must be WEIGHED? I have NO IDEA what you are talking about.

Where does the Bible say to stop weighing food? You know the song, "Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature?" Is Jesus less fair than your grocery store, your United States Agricultural Department which weighs all food in the United States? Is Nature gravity and weight? Is Jesus less fair than your Thrive? Do they sell by portion or by weight? Do a study on food in the Bible. What does God say about Esau who did what he wanted? What does the Bible say about 2nd Kings 6:30-36? If you want to be a true prepper, you will know more than volume, which is not reliable for measuring. You will know weight! You know how Matt Damon survived Mars in the movie? Not by portion but by weight. www.TheHealthFair.com Andrew Chung, MD/PhD teaches weighing 32 ounces of food a day for the valves in the heart and veins.

When you put gas in your vehicle, you can put regular or premium. In the Bible food part of our instruction. We want Leviticus to stand, and yet Peter learned there is no "clean/unclean" food. I do teach mold elimination because so much is taught about mold, and I personally go to the ER when I have eaten any food that has mold, or breathe mold. Rick Warren's church may have more that you like about measurement or not. It is not interpretation to say Jesus was the son of a carpenter, or that food was measured in the Bible. These are facts. In the wilderness the food is measured. There is no place that says to stop measuring food. We guess when we don't have to. It is a hardship to guess. None of you heard the science in the Bible preached from the pulpit. Basic science means measurement. Nine year old children learn how to measure in grade school. Not difficult. Rationing is not "very little" but the right amount. Knowing how much you eat is smart. Guessing how much you eat isn't smart. Eating too much is a heart attack waiting to happen. Eating too little is anorexia. Eating the right amount is rationing in military/hunting terms--not very little. No deprivation in eating the right amount. No squandering in eating the right amount. 32 ounces of food a day is not deprivation. 2 subway sandwiches that are 12 inches each weigh 32 ounces together. A food scale is a tool. What does the Bible say? Does anyone care what the Bible says about food?

Can you eat too much good food? Can people drink so much water they die? Can they eat so much spinach they die? If you don't eat enough or eat too much of anything, good or bad, you are not healthy and you could die. Substance matters. POWs live off bugs and bread and any trash given to them and they survive unless they are not given enough. Six kids a week die every week in elementary school because they are so obese they have heart attacks. Daniel did not need to be told to measure. He was smart.

So if you eat good food you can eat 15 pounds of food a day? I did not say to eat anything in particular. If you have to survive, you may not have the Daniel foods. You may have what is in the place you landed when the Earthquake took away everything, or the war took away everything. You may have to survive on whatever is around. Guessing won't help you survive. Knowing by basic science (weight) will help you know.

You both are amazing. I can relate to what you are saying. My hubby and I are in our mid 60s and we, like you, lost our home, our business (that was our only income source) and my Mom all within a few months in 2008. We learned so much about ourselves and that experience is never far from my mind when making choices on buying anything. We drive a car we bought 13 years ago and couldn't be happier without a car payment. I wish we would have an area like you found for your home and admire how Bill was able to do the renovations to make it your own. God is so good. God bless, Linda

We went thru something similar in the crash of 1986, thankfully, we didn't lose our home when my husband was out of work for 9 months, but we sold it, downsized drastically and learned a valuable lesson, to not live within our means, but below our means. We had each other, and worked to make it work. What I love about your story is you didn't give up, you regrouped and made a way with the Lord's help. Very inspiring.
