I was at Fort Riley from 2004-2007 with one year of that in Iraq. I was an infantryman. I enjoyed the area which I was not expecting to do. Lawrence, KS, home to KU, is only about 30-45 minutes away and I enjoyed hanging out there. Being infantrymen just back from a combat tour there was a lot of drinking in Aggieville. I remember going to Kansas City several times. Being in the field there was not pleasant at all especially in the winter. I did enjoy the change of seasons though as it gets hot there in the summer and it can be very cold and windy in the winter. There were times when I woke up in my fighting position covered in snow. Manhatten, KS, just outside the gate, is a college town and I enjoyed, as a young man, being in that context. There are a lot of smaller towns over the state which I thought were neat too, small towns that were once industrial areas as people moved west. There was something charming, to me, about the history of KS.

I was at Riley from 2008-2010 (with a deployment thrown in) and I absolutely loved the area. I'm from a rural area so I felt right at home, and I loved the cool weather in the winter. The summers arent that bad if you're used to the heat, because the wind is always blowing. The Konza Prairie Preserve is great, and there are some great restaurants, coffee shops, parks in Manhattan. If you need alot of stuff to do, KC is only two hours away! Really glad I got to hang out in KS for awhile, Loved it

I was at Fort Riley from 96-99. I was in 1st Armored Division 3rd Brigade 4-1FA Service battery. We always had good time doing competitions/rivalries with 1st armored. I loved it out there.

I was there 73 to 75, went on Reforger to Germany where 3/4 of post loaded up on c-141 Starlifters at Salina, KS non stop to Ramstein AFB. Loved Manhattan, KS but GIs didn't get along with college students at the time. Overall a good station at the time. A Co, 34th Eng.

I was there in the 90's and it sucked...... The Barracks sucked and being in the Infantry our platoon Sargent was worse than Basic training Drill Sargents and we always stayed in the field in the winter!!!! I left the military after my first enlistment I planned on doing a whole 20 years and retire but after the way we were treated I exited immediately with out hesitation!!!

I was stationed there for almost 7 years. I almost got out until they offered me Fort Knox back in 2011. The op tempo was just too high to include the back to back deployments we had to Iraq and Afghanistan. The weather there only stayed nice for maybe a month around July, then it would get bad again. The only time I could enjoy myself was to drive 3 hours to Kansas City on the weekends, but that got to be too much as well.

I was there for ROTC Advanced Camp. WWII barracks and good banana splits on AAFES truck that came by every evening. Didn't feed us much there. Wheat fields right across little road from WWII barracks...lots of them. Saw Wrath of Khan ('82) at strip mall in manhattan.

I was Medical support for ROTC advanced training (1986). Lived in WWll barracks ( H. H. C. 1st ID ), first aid station was in the basement of barracks. But pretty much lived outside as medical support for most of the post. Met a lot of good, highly trained and motivated people.

@@doriewheeler8040 I was there in '82 and don't believe I need med support during my six weeks...except for lack of caliries. It's the only place or time in the military where I went to bed hungry nearly every night (not on weekends, though). when did they take down the WWII bldgs?

@@teller1290are the WWll barracks not there anymore? I just remember keeping the floors clean and highly shined took a lot of time and energy. And to keep from clomping down the hallways to get to our rooms we had to remove our boots. The company commander's office was in the same building. Very sorry you didn't get fed. What happened to 3 hots and a cot? Remember training in the wheat fields or some really tall grass - the dew in the a.m. had us soaked from head to toe. Mosquitoes were awful.

@@doriewheeler8040 I just assumed 40 yrs later, the then 40-yr old bldgs would be gone by now. Yeh, it's like they were short rations. Eggs had some green in them. Got my first and only case of chiggers (26 of them in a perfect circle along my waistline) and made my first and only use of fingernail polish: the remedy for getting rid of chiggers. And we had done some tactical maneuvering through high grass that morning. By lunch, they were biting. Fortunately, I had a female in my platoon (a bit rarer in '82 than now) and she had clear nail polish handy.

I have a 5th Con about Fort Riley. It's located right next to I-70 where if a terrorist wanted, they can launch an attack with shoulder fired missles and blow up buildings and Helicopters and especially the hanger that holds the MQ-1C Drone's. Youd think they'd have this area further away from the highway but nope! Not very smart!
