You do not need a car in DC. Everything is walkable and accessible. Gas and groceries are not expensive in DC compared to so many other places in the USA. Your biggest expense in DC will be rent. If you walk or use a bike, don't eat out everyday and spend your money on stupid stuff, you will live very well here. There are so many FREE things here it's unbelievable. I live in Logan DC and I love it. If I want to buy a house, there are plenty of affordable options outside the city. If I want to experience a Tier 1 Global City, NYC is a 1 hour flight away. The only regret I have is not moving here sooner.

@@bananawarriorwootwoot in all honesty, if you have kids and want them to be in a top tier american school system. The neighboring Montgomery county and city of alexandria are a better bet. DCPS doesn’t have the best rep

DC is an expensive place to live. In order to live comfortably you have to at least make $75,000 or better to live in a comfortable rental. Rental usually start at $1200 for an efficiency and that maybe in the hood. If you want to buy in DC that’s a whole different money game😩 to purchase a house in DC it start off at 500,000 and many are in high crime neighborhoods. Which means your $75,000 is nothing. Also, let’s talk about the car jackings and crime here it’s unbelievable. The pro is employment and opportunities.

First...ask yourself WHY you are interested in moving to the Washington, DC region. Washington, DC has a terrible crime problem. The District has a 9% sales tax rate. Rents are expensive and a decent home for purchase is nearly unattainable except for the wealthiest people. Should you have a car, you must submit to a yearly inspection performed by the District government....Monday through Friday, 9AM to 3PM. That's it. Don't want to have a car? Enjoy lugging your groceries and laundry around by hand or on a bike. DC gets hotter than Miami in the summer and winters can be dank and rainy. It does not snow often but when it does the area is paralyzed. Northern Virginia...expensive! Sales tax on clothes and food, personal property tax on cars and motorcycles (and boats and trailers), expensive rents and homes, bad traffic every day of the week. Suburban Maryland...no personal property tax but the local income tax is half the state income tax. Everything else I said about Northern Virginia applies. After you see a museum twice, it's old hat. There are few decent non chain restaurants. Everything is a huge political issue. How do I know? I lived in the area fron 1988 through 1994. Been back to visit friends and the little bit of family I have left there...two relatives are buried in Arlington. I lived on both sides of the Potomac. Drove to work, took the Metro, took the MARC train, the VRE train, carpooled... Wanna see DC? Go visit. There are numetous better places to build a career and live better for less money. I returned to Western Pennsylvania in 1995. Less traffic, cheaper groceries, affordable houses and none of the pretentious politics that permeate DC.

Caryn, don't forget about the National Gallery of Art (which is not a part of the Smithsonian). It has some of the most beautiful works of art in the world. It also has a beautiful outdoor sculpture garden which is converted into a wonderful skating rink in the winter.

Lots of idiots crossing the street while texting and not paying attention to the traffic. Bicycles slowing people down on the road. Lots of Karens everywhere. Also if you are claustrophobic stay away from downtown during the 4th of July.

As a gay man, the thing I love about DC is all the handsome professional married closet men who come here on business and hookup with me at the spa or meet online. There are soooo many. Ladies, if your man has business in DC, he could be hooking up with another man during his stay here. Happens all the time.
