This is one chapter of protecting our friendly goats. Bodo the white dog, boxer, is excellent at keeping bears from attacking us. However, bears keep trying almost every night. I put out extra cameras where I suspect the bear walks by us, especially at night. The most likely times to have a bear are just after dark and 2 hours before daylight. If you can stop the bear with loud noises -- GREAT. Maybe the bear will leave and not return, but usually within a week the same bear is back and Game and Fish must be called again. Bodo worked his heart out trying to protect us - but his cancer killed him a short time later. Eventually we get a bear trap, but it was too late for Peanut. She just couldn't outrun a small bear that killed her and it did not eat her. He returned to her body and I shot him. I wish this never happened to us because it greatly affected us - our whole family. We miss you dear Peanut. She was the most friendly goat I ever saw.
Now our cemetery has dear Cash & Bodo (amazing watch dogs), Peanut, and a damn bear.
If you are going to shoot a bear for protection -- use more than a 45 caliber weapon to put it down as humanely as possible and call the law promptly.
12 gauge with buckshot only works if you are very close (inside 30 yards). 308 from an AR is more effective. Expect your attacks mostly in dark of night.
