Hey, Paul...I was at Woodstock. Hendrix played on Monday morning, as I recall. LOTS of people had left earlier, so the acoustics in the natural amphitheatre was naturally amplified. I remember Jimi as playing way too loud...sorta like I used to do with my '65 Twin Reverb amp. But, the reason was the lack of absorption since the crowd was so thinned out. So, it wasn't Jimi's problem...it was the acoustics of the outdoor venue. No idea if that makes any sense, in terms of amp/guitar building. Incidentally, that's where I met Carlos Santana and Mike Shrieve. A sort of coincidence. Be well. Keep up the transformative good work. [I got the SE Santana in 2002. Still plays great.] Thanks. Poplar is an odd choice for cabinet material in a Hendrix inspired cab since his old 100 logo Marshall 1982 was a standard birch plywood cab . I would love to see inside one of Hendrix 1966 100 logo marshall cabs to see exactly what speakers were in them . The consensus is they had very ealry G12H speakers which would make them G12H25s rather than 30s as the G12M started out at 29 watts and the G12H at 25. They were bunped up to 25 watts and 30 watts respectively around Mid 1968. Hendrix cabs likely had the 55Hz bass Cone G12H25s as well . Sounds like choosing the Creamback H75 was proper choice as it's the closest available Celestion that also has higher power handling .

The signal from the HX 100 & 50-watt amp heads (seen in-frame) were sent to mirrored speaker cabinets (out of frame) and close mic'd with a Byer Dynamic M160 on one speaker & a Shure SM7 on another speaker. Those close mics are accompanied by one of Paul Smith's custom-built room mics. These mic signals were sent to multiple custom-built RCA tube-driven mic preamps and were recorded through a UA Apollo x8p and ProTools.

I was watching the new PRS amp that they claim is a Hendrx amp's clone. They dissected every electronic part and the whole circuitry to find that ellusive clean tone that borders to breakage of the signal. A clean-ish low distortion tone I would say. Very responsive to the player's touch. Dynamics is the key word. What I'm trying to say here is that Hendrix was, indeed in love of clean tone amps with a special attention to low frequencies. Engineers modded his amps to get that special sought after tone that is NOT available in vintage amps. You can experience this last claim listening the amp's response in that video. Well, those were the final years with that modified amp. But .... What about the early days in London when Hendrix was looking for a new distorded tone with the clean tone He had in his head? Hendrix didn't want to change his signature clean tone so He deviced a portable way to get that clean tone on any amp. So I remember this guy on KZitem explaining the whole Hendrix CLEAN tone concept in order to show the elements of the tone. Hendrix "clean" tone is found in songs like LITTLE WING and Wind Cries Mary. The signal is almost near to break ... is a distorted signal at it's minimum level, very subtle with LOWS almost present. This YT guy had a perfect ear for this kind of quest. He demonstrated that You can achieve that Hendrix Clean-ish Tone the way He did it before to get that modded amp: This is the guitar signal chain. Strat-->Fuzz -->Any Amp you like The Fuzz box is the key to get that tone. The secret is in details. On any average FUZZ pedal You see [ Drive ] [ Tone ] and [ Level ] controls. The way You set these controls is the easiest way to go to heaven. In my Ibanez TONE-LOK Fuzz pedal, my custom settings are [ DRIVE ] @ 10 [ TONE ] @ 12 [ LEVEL ] @ 9 [ DAMAGE ] @ 10% I play with Fender Hendrix Custom Sting Gauge [ Heavy Highs and Light Lows ] My amp settings [ Bass ] 10 [ Mid ] 5 [ Treble ] 12 My tone is almost like a Telecaster if the pickups are a tad high. Pickups are low to avoid piercing tone in Mid/Bridge pickups. One more thing .... this is very important to share. My practice amp [15 watts ] is modded to increase lows. I cut a square of wood to fit in the back of the amp with a notch in the border small enough to let pass the wire of the amp's plug. I sealed the perimeter of the plate of wood that holds the speaker. If is not sealed, the amp can serve as a fan when you play guitar. The air flows around the speaker and that is a no-no. (In my 50 watts amp [Hiwatt] I don't need to worry about lows frequencies, the 75 watts speaker makes a great job with my Fuzz box.) The goal is to get a "lazy" speaker that handles lows slower than highs. The speaker cone hits a bed of air when goes back making a fat tone. I also cut a square of "acoustic" foam, the one you can find in boxes to avoid things move inside when you send small things in the mail. The flat face of the "acoustic" foam goes to the back of the amp. I made a 1/2 inch hole in the center of the wood. This way air flows through the foam freely. The hole has a piece of foam that fits ok. This mod makes the speaker "behave" like a 12 inches speaker moving slower when handles low frequencies. In case you ask me about distorted tones, well .... let me tell you that at medium levels of distortion, you get a fuzz effect that sings like a violin !!!!!! If you have an open back amp (50 or 100 watts) keep in mind that low frecuencies are treated different by the speaker. A closed back amp is half way to get that Hendrix CLEAN tone. There you have it, closed back combos vs. open back speaker enclosure. When you set to try a FUZZ box in your own amp, remember, the goal here is to get a nice "98 % cleanish - 2% crunchy" volume level .... even at high volume level. Keep an eye on the DRIVE control of your Fuzz box and the volume control of your guitar. Try to compensate any changes between these 2 controls to get overall volume under control. My guitar volume is at 5 with a volume at 9 in my practice amp. If you are in a band, try to get noticed, the FUZZ box delivers enough headroom if you compensate volume levels ( fx box/guitar).
