Among these two-PRS. Among the two brands-Knaggs. Upd. 10:26 "...even though they are tapped-slash-split". Well. They are tapped when they are not split. And they are not tapped when they are split. When they are split they are untapped, when the are non split they are tapped. Those coils with screws have a bar magnet underneath, almost as a conventional humbucker ('almost', cause it's half the width, closer in size to one of the two magnets of a P90) and about 5,000 turns of wire, again as a conventional humbucker. The coils with slugs are actually coils with six separate magnets. Hence they're pretty much Strat single coil pickups when engaged on their own. And they have a few thousand turns of wire more than the neighbouring coils with screws, like 7,500 or 8,000. However they have also a tap at 5,000 turns point. So the coil has one ground and two hots-one hot is at 5,000 turns, the other hot is, say, at 8,000 turns (full wire length). In humbucker mode both coils are working, one of which acts with all its 5,000 turns of wire of 5,000 turns total, the other -the one with 6 individual magnets- is tapped and acts with its 5,000 turns of wire of its 8,000 turns total. Thus 10,000 turns combined in series... and we have a traditional humbucker. When split, the coil with screws disengages from the circuit completely, the other stays on, but untapped-now it acts with all of its 8,000 turns of wire. Hence no volume drop. (I do not know what quantity of wire turns are in those coils, the numbers are given for the concept explanation.)

I think that PRS’s bodies are made of sipo, not mahogany (I could be wrong, but sipo is used in lots of the core models from PRS. Speaking of the pickups, they are coil tapped, not splitted, preventing the volume from dropping significantly, also, still humbucking but making it sound thinner, almost as if it was splitted.
@furoraguitars

Sipo is mahogany, not genuine Mahogany, but surely a correct statement. Khaya, Sipo are great mahoganies, Meranti a Philippine mahogany also... Sapele used by many (PRS too) is very far away from genuine Mahogany.
@BAMozzy69

Easily the PRS. Just look at it and see how beautiful it is and the craftsmanship of it. The brush stroke birds are much better than dots!! Its also more versatile with the individual splitting option that doesn't drop in volume - every think about the PRS screams quality and you know that quality is going to cost. As nice as the Knaggs looks, it doesn't look as expensive even if it sounds great too. Its far more understated but the dots cheapen it for me - any idiot can drill a hole but it takes a lot more time and effort to make the brushstroke birds and inlay those. Each to their own and I am not saying the Knaggs is bad by any stretch of the imagination but I wouldn't hesitate to take the PRS if I was given the choice. I'd take the Knaggs over a LOT of other guitars but not this one!

Both look to be very well made, artisan level guitars. It seems to be a tonal preference thing; I prefer the beefiness of the Knaggs' tone and LP-style playability, but clearly others like the crisper, more bell-tone sound of the PRS, more Strat-like IMO. I also have a Severn Trembucker T3, another great guitar although I’d prefer the Kenai if absolutely forced to decide. Superlative quality, IMO. I also own several PRSes of various models. Which brand is better? Both such high quality guitars … It’s SO hard to decide.
