Phew- thank you for just getting down to business. I’ve watched a lot of these and really appreciate that you show rather than tell! Why should I have still been searching for pruning videos after watching so many? Because I was still confused. Now I’m not- thanks! Also, props for filming THE WHOLE TREE and yourself from a decent distance. I notice it’s weirdly hard to find video or even pictures of the full-grown version of some trees and plants I’ve ordered with any sense of scale. But here it’s clear where exactly the cuts are happening. Bravo.

So what?? You got a knee and a waist line don't you?? 🤔 The tree will do just fine with cuts at lower heights. This type of pruning is intended to create a fruit tree that can be picked by hand without the need for height assisting equipment. If you are a midget, your cuts will need to be lower than other people, to enable you to reach the fruit when it's ripened. ☝ (I understand you probably joking but I thought I make a point.) 😉

I will follow his instruction for pruning and developing plum trees my area 100 kilometers south west of Washington D. C. Is not suitable for cherry growing but plums grow well . I would like to try growing cherry trees on drawf rootstock . Minus 5° Celsius is our usual temperature but occasional it will get minus 12° Celsius. Possibly will consider trees burned to Spanish bush style under cover. A small row of maybe 5 trees .

I'm now scared to cut the trunk at reach height because some major branches grew on top of it. Is it possible to damage the tree if I cut the trunk too short of its total height or can I just bring it back to bush status?

So yes my dear bounty hunter you can damage the tree ...this method must be apply early on the life of the tree...not even the Force can save it if you make a big cut on the trunk...the best is to leave it grow as it can and just remove the dead branches...

I just purchased a Bing and black Tartarian for cross pollination. Both are basically 4-4.5ft 1.5m straight sticks with little side growth. Both Just fully leafed out for spring with finger sized trunks. Will be planting into the ground tomorrow. Can I safely prune off the top meter or so at knee high just above desired leafed out shoots this time of year to start training the to this method? Do you pull/cut off all the trunk side shoots below the cut just leaving the top 2 or live shoots near the cut? Or should I wait a year let the roots set and get established then wait until fall/winter to make cut now that spring has arrived? We are also going into a 3-5 day dry spell with no rain, does that help if I can safely make the cut? I know many questions in there but reading through your responses to others questions I think I have a grasp of the concept just not sure about spring cutting if possible

Any time is ok just make sure the weather is dry...its fall in the video ..i prune from late summer to early fall...in my area the weather is dry that time...and yes if the winter is extremely cold frost damage will hit the pruning trees

So, we did the knee prune in year 1 but didn't prune at all in years 2-4. Tree seems healthy, blooms and bears fruit. But its canopy is a little narrow. Is it too late to begin pruning to encourage branching out?

This video is very helpful. Straight to the point. Thank you for sharing. My tree is about 10 years old. Doesn't produce many fruits for the past 4 years. I used chicken manure pallets as fertilizer. Any advice to encourage the tree to produce more fruits? Thanks in advance. Greetings from Melbourne Australia 😊

Cutting below where it's, green as in where it's solid woody, takes away the main growth node where the plant puts it's time energy and resources into getting leggy and tall. Seeing it doesn't have to compete for sunlight or nutrients there's no reason the tree would ever want to be 12+meters tall. It benefits him in the long run having a full canopy at ground level where it's nice and pickably also he can inspect and spray and take care of business. It's similar to topping a pepper plant.

First, thank you for making a video that is to the point. Now.........my question is.....I have had my cherry tree for two years in the ground. The tree is growing like a cane growing in a shallow pond of water......straight up with no branches. Can I still cut it back to the height shown in your video for the first cut. I did not know to cut it when I first received and planted it. Cut now will not damage tree? Thank you

Anything would be helpful.

So every variety is different...one makes flowers in year 3 the other in year 7...you can force flower formation by not pruning the branches...or just being patient... usually cherry trees needs 6 years to make flowers
