I live in Pa also. My old fig tree is in the ground. Around Nov when the tree has dropped all leaves, I prune heavily. I try to keep them no more than 10 inches long. I use sticks around them about 2 feet away around the tree. I use roofing tar paper to create a basin. Top is open. I fill the basing with dry leaves and let is go for the entire winter. In the spring I remove the leaves completely which are now rotten and decomposed (and stink). Wash the area very well and in no time it grows new branches and new fruits. I've done this for at least 10 years. No problem ever.

My mother in law was from Serbia and moved to Cleveland Ohio...she grew figs and in the fall she would pull gently the limbs as closed to the ground as she could without breaking them and she put a tarp and a bunch of carpet over them to keep them warm...they came back every year for 30 that I know of so you can keep them in the ground if you wanted to

Wood glue volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that might me phytotoxic to plant growth. Not saying you're doing anything wrong, but keep an open opinion whether it isn't slowing the tree down even more. We've had that very problem with PVA paints that are high in VOCs and ammonia. In the end we had to resort to special low-VOC paints used in the hospital industry not to kill our plants.

Hi. Good looking Fig trees. When you take the cuttings in the fall, can they be put right into dirt and then in the garage with the other trees? Will they root by Spring? I've always taken cuttings in the Spring and get about 50% of them to root. What do you do with the cuttings in the Fall?

It is too cold where you are to keep it in ground over winter. Try protecting it in the fall by adding mulch/leaves around it and then wrapping it with burlap. You could also do what my Italian relatives did and dig a hole next to the tree, bend it over, and bury it until spring!

If you didn't prune after the first few frosts, do you have to wait until the following fall/winter to prune? In other words, how late in a year may a person prune a fig tree without causing harm to the tree? We have a Brown Turkey fig. Also, OUR tree is in the ground.
@PAFigs
7 жыл бұрын
Jeri Burbage normally people prune when the tree is dormant so they can take cuttings for propagation as well as not interfere with the fruit on those branches. It also reduces the stress on the tree. You can prune an actively growing tree, just do a little at a time to avoid shock and fruit drop.

Question for you. My neighbor had an Ash tree removed from his yard. The tree company dropped the tree in my yard hitting my fig tree. The main trunk of the tree was snapped in half. They never asked to drop the tree in my yard. It happened today October 28th. Do you have suggestions as to what to do to repair the trunk and save the tree? Thanks for any advice. This tree was a cutting from a tree in Philadelphia ( a gift ) and I don't know it's species. Just that it is finally ready to provide figs next season. Now pushed back for giving fruit.
