My moms Vanhouttei Spirea is diseased. It’s October 1st. Can I prune these parts now or should I wait until spring?

Hi there. It's usually a good idea to prune out any dead or diseased wood, but the trick is to not prune out soooo much that you trigger the plant to respond with new growth. To play it safe, we would say to remove the dead areas completely, but don't exceed removing any more than 1/4 of the total mass of the plant so you don't trigger a growth response. If you trigger a growth response, any new growth will be most likely damaged from the cold winter temperatures because it won't have enough time to harden tissues before frost and freezing temperatures set in. Our 2-cents on how we would handle it, but always use your best judgement. Hope that helps and if you want to email us to talk more about it, please email us at seanandallison@spokengarden.com. Thank you for watching! 😊😃👍

Accidentally purchased this off of Amazon, I wanted to refund it but the shop doesn’t allow it.... so here I am. Watching all of these videos LOL. All I wanted was a butterfly Bush but this is fine too.

Hi Violet uou! 👋 Sorry that you didn't get the plant you wanted, but having a beautiful spirea plant is nice too. You just reminded us that we will be having covering some specific butterfly bushes in a future Friday Plant Chat. We hope you are enjoying your new spirea plant and thank you for watching and commenting! 😁👍

That guy was way neglected. It happens when you have a large garden. Personally, I would have cut more. Curious to see the result. Please plan an update for next year.

I just cut mine down to about 2’ off the ground. It hadn’t seen a proper prune in a long time. I wanted to make room for new growth, hope I didn’t cut it down too low😮
