We have been picking and harvesting chokecherries for years! They make a super syrup and great jelly! As a child in Montana we also picked and preserved! Are these the same species that we have been eating for 75 years?

If in Alaska then yes probably. There are three species of chokecherry that have been planted here. If this is in Montana than you are likely using a different species, or one of the two that is spreading in Alaska (Prunus virginiana), which is native to North America, but not not native to Alaska.
