You would actually be surprised how well a 8$ dac can perform compared to $1000 dacs. The apple usb c dongle is king in value for low output power dacs. I'm using it as a pc dac with some swans m80 speakers with a split connection for monoprice retro headphones and it sound just as good as the soundcard it replaced.

Great review.. I have a pair of the M700 coming today and they WILL be paired with a very high quality preamp! This review was extremely balanced and I appreciated your process of evaluating. Given your comments, I think my combination of components will yield a positive experience. Too bad PS Audio tends to pair these two product together in reviews, as it seems the DAC is the weak link here.

No one seems to mention the suitability or otherwise of the B&W 706 as a match to this combo. It's as if it's just taken as a given. I'd have thought that a more substantial speaker (702 perhaps) might have given a more useful insight into the potential of the PS combo with the respective power ratings. Speaker suitability is a relevant factor. Just saying.

Thanks for the review. I just got the same combo to try and replace my vintage equipment. First thing of note, I have absolutely no hiss in my speakers even cranked up to 85 on the volume (no music playing), as mentioned you might have a defective preamp or other issue. I’m replacing my 1970’s dual mono preamp with the PS Audio pre and not hearing a improvement to justify the switch. It does offer several functions my old pre doesn’t, remote control, filters(if that’s your thing) on the digital input for tailoring the sound, modern inputs vs all RCA on my preamp. I tried just the pre in my system and then with the M700’s. The combo still did not improve the Stellar Preamp, the soundstage seems smaller than my vintage setup.The M700’s are being auditioned to replace a Phase Linear 400 but I still don’t hear a vast improvement. I’m using Dahlquist DQ-10s as speakers, very power hungry especially in my larger listening room. I have the M700s and the volume turned up to 65-75 to get 94-97 dB. I still have a week or so of listening before I decide if I’m keeping them. I need to try the M700’s with my old preamp too. Right now I’d say I’m for sending the preamp back and about 70/30 for sending the M700’s back too. I might either have to buy up the PS Audio line or look at other equipment. Good luck in your search.

The A23+ will be here in a day or two... Right now, the Gaincell is walking all over my Athena Preamp and Venus II 12th DAC using an old Emotiva XPA-2. My Stellar Stack was a great match with my Series 1 Bose 901's and both Analog Bose EQ Boxes and even better with Balanced MiniDSP. The 6dB increase as is the nature of True Balance XLR is mostly why it sounded better. I loved the sound of STellar PCM DAC but never had a chance to try the I2S input for DoP playback. Never heard any hiss from the SGCD other that what was generated by my EQ Boxes. I traded mine in and paid the difference for the PS Audio DirectStream DAC which drives my M700's. I miss it as a Preamp. My search for a DAC is over. Using a Sony UBP-X1000 ES with HDMI to I2S Adapter Boards just raises the bar even higher. Was your Stellar Stack a Sample Units that have been passed to to one reviewer to another ? Maybe the Factory needs to be informed that the units need checking. Your review was honest but my experience with the SGCD was excellent and I traded it in only for reasons of economy. Miss it in my System.

@@Tharbamar That sucs, I am a big fan of onkyo's vintage lineup. I have been looking on the web and i am stunned, in the 2000 to 5000 range there is not one amp that I would buy. I love vintage amps but I get why it would be a risk, in the netherlands the secondhand audio market is huge there is not a lot of scamming. It's not only about the cables. It's obvious that any more or less good DAC outputs a balanced signal first. And at the very end the balanced signal is mixed into unbalanced one. So, here we have a money saving on that chip (that could be even some inexpensive opamp). Because for reasons, a power amp that does not have a balanced input, is good enough for that cheap balanced output. This also can happen inside the power amp as well. I mean a mixing of balanced to unbalanced signals. Shortly, signal paths are different, and cables them self have no such influence. You need a spectrum analyzer to see a difference between two good cables. About the sound. People listen to saturated, colorful sounds of a traditional A/B all the time. This creates some pattern in our head. A signer have no any saturation in his/her voice. He or she eat big hamburger just before a recording, and is not able to output any saturation )) Those who are not Eric Clapton play on a guitar for a mass market (more or less). And typically there is no one Paganini's violin in an orchestra. We have to get rid of this habit to listen to a decorated sound I think. Instead (after we saved money with class D) let's invest into loudspeakers that can reproduce sound naturally. Because all our searching for a saturated sound is caused because of imperfectness of a loudspeaker. PS For instance, PS Audio uses Infinity's sound array loudspeakers for $50k new in their music room #1 -)
@AT-wl9yq
Жыл бұрын
"You need a spectrum analyzer to see a difference between two good cables." Not me, and I've done many blind tests to confirm it. If this is something you are interested in, do the science and see for yourself. Its a bit more work, but I think you would find it definitely worth the time. "Because for reasons, a power amp that does not have a balanced input, is good enough for that cheap balanced output. This also can happen inside the power amp as well. I mean a mixing of balanced to unbalanced signals. Shortly, signal paths are different, and cables them self have no such influence." There's a lot of misinformation when it comes to balanced operation. You can't mix balanced and unbalanced signals. They're not compatible. In order for it to work, both components and the cable has to be balanced. If you don't have all 3, the signal is single ended (unbalanced). When you mix the 2, what happens is one of the 3 pins on the xlr cable isn't used because the single ended connection only supports 2. Even though you are using a balanced cable, its identical to using an rca cable. Also, you need to be very careful. There's different ways to wire the circuit, and in some cases one of the balanced signal conductors are combined with the ground. The second you make the connection it immediately creates a short circuit and has the potential to damage your equipment. Most balanced components go over what you can and can't do in the owners manual.

I just don't get it, late night listening with a monstrous power amp is fine, but turn it up and it sounds like a Niteclub,, ????, What.?

I concur, PS Audio makes some of the LEAST attractive equipment on the market, regardless of sound. They look like PC servers from the '90s. I would be embarrassed to have them in my living room. They really need to rethink their aesthetic. Thanks for the review.
