Which traits characterize this era the most? How do they make it unique?
@AnotherDante
2 ай бұрын
@@12-OneTwo I'd say this is the period of time (90-2000) when cutting-edge entertainment started to become more accessible to the general public, some common characteristics of this in no particular order were: Developers with great ambitions hampered by hardware limitations, the aesthetics of "the future", experimental game design (gaming conventions like control schemes for example, weren't completely solidified yet); New genres coming out regularly due to this , the rise to prominence of three-dimensional environments and the pursuit of more "realistic" graphics, "jank" the phenomenon where gameplay mechanics have a defective, buggy or unpolished implementation leading to a deviation of the actual experience from the intended experience, lots and lots of shovelware. I'm sure there is more but I can't be arsed to type lol.

Back in those days, we were riding the technological wave, expecting it to get higher and higher im quality terms. Little we knew, it wasnt going to be exponential. We were at the highest point and we didnt realize.

It's still rising in some areas, but I think it will become increasingly uneven. I think many people will become more lazy and careless, and the proportion of impulsive people in the general population will grow, to cause a lot of inertia. But there will still be some new impressive stuff.

I don’t think your read on this is quite right. Technology has still improved in leaps and bounds, and the trajectory never really went anywhere. But remember that optimistic feeling everyone had about tech in the early 2000s? Where’d that go? I think the problem lies not in how good tech has gotten or the speed at which it does so, but rather what uses we have for it. Back then, the possibilities were endless. How was new tech gonna be used? We didn’t know, but it sure was going to improve our lives! But today it’s just used for stupid shit, like better weapons, more addictive social media, better stock trading algorithms, more surveillance, more ways to generate unending content, the list goes on. None of these improve our lives in any meaningful way, and the excitement of new tech is gone. AI sounded cool, but look at what it’s used for. Nobody’s excited for every conceivable thing to have AI slapped into it for no reason. Chatbots and more content. Whoopdifuckingdoo. Who cares. But I’m with you. I miss the old days too. And hell, maybe I think like this because I had no conception of the real world when I was a kid.

I mean, we did realize in a way. I was fantasizing like crazy, inspired by games looks, music and feel. I was stoked about videogames and the worlds they'd contain. Nowadays everything feels too much like a rushed re-hash (I know, everything is a remix ), saturated with low quality output not only in games but in many forms of mainstream creativity, adding up to a daily background noise that feels like too much and keeps many people like myself out of focus and numb. I'd just say I'm starting to grow old (mid 30s), and that comes with a price.

Well, I was in the same boat in 2021, with all the covid madness especially. No certifiable skillset even. Anyway, I realized that it isn't about this life but eternity. Read the Bible. Jesus Christ, God the Creator, manifest in the flesh, paid for your sins with His own blood on the cross so that you could know God the Father and have eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ. Get yourself a King James Bible and have faith. *and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.* John 10:28 KJB

This is the last era where games were still mysterious and experimental. When you bought a random PS1 game, you never knew what to expect. But these days, the mainstream gaming experience has become homogenized, and games are all designed to appeal to the largest possible audience. Lootboxes hijack your dopamine system, and everything is polished and squeaky clean.

The nostalgists on here echo the same senitment as any other cultural medium; music, arts, daily life, films, tv, etc... What you miss is the sense of your youth, where you were not entirely aware of the problems surrounding the times. And also what you miss is the sense of DIY, low tech, love for making which appears less present today. But this is not the full story. It's more the fact that more people are making things and the tech is better, and so in the process you still get a lot of good stuff, but also far more average soulless stuff too. There was no technological optimism, and if you think that then you had your hands over your ears. Don't forget in 1999 most people thought the world would become chaos because the computers would go back to 0. In the mid 90's the media was worrying about video game violence effects on teenagers. The entire history of our civilisation has been one of fear of the future and hope for the future regarding technological progression. If there is an issue it's that we probably have too much noise around us, too many opinions and marketing around gaming and culture in general. It could do with that sense of naivity and love of making which we associate with our youthful experiences. That can only be achieved by younger generations though. Us who lived through the PS1 are too old and jaded now.

I find it interesting how the tone of the playlist changes and evolves. It starts nostalgic, wishful, and melancholic, but slowly evolves to become rather drab, tired, and weary. Then, at the end, starting by Solitude and Prayer, it shifts to become more hopeful and poised, to finally finish with the more assertive and inspiring Tree of Life. I don't know if that was the intent, but it feels like while much of the playlist reminds us of the joy of the past and the sorrow of being lost, it still encourages us to move toward the future instead of lamenting too much.
