Regarding the trigger buttons: I really hope that they fix the sensitivity curves in the software if possible. I play racing games a LOT and that sensitivity curve is a significant issue. However, in terms of applying pressure on the triggers, I would like to see how comfort changes while using the analog sticks and triggers when holding the RP4 triggers with your middle fingers and not the pointer, which is how I think it is designed for.

Apparently, I'm the only person who doesn't mind the select/start placement on the rp3/+. After playing it for about a day, I had no problem with the location. In fact, going back to play on my PSP, I find myself reaching for the TOP to locate those buttons. I would have MUCH rather seen that space used for front-facing speakers. Speaker placement is my biggest complaint about the device, as I frequently rest the handheld on my fingers and end up blocking the speaker ports. I'm not likely to jump on the RP4 as my 3+ is mostly a PSP handheld, and it excels at that.
@dtape
8 ай бұрын
Yeah I got accustomed to the start/select buttons on top quickly too. It was a relatively minor design choice compared to the vocal backlash. I did the Konami code in Life Force no problem first try today on my RP3+. Good point that front firing speakers would have been a better and more meaningful update on the RP4.

I don't watch every Taki video but when I do I'd say he make every effort to be fair to a device. And I feel like this is a fair first look. There are some things that are a bit questionable on these review units that make me feel like there's a moderate % chance we might see a hardware revision unless these quirks can be handled in software. That said you shouldn't buy a device for what you think it will _become,_ you should buy it for what it is now with the understanding it might not get much better. I feel like I should probably wait for the production models to reach reviewers hands before buying at this point, to see if there's any real improvement over the review units they sent out early.

I'm glad you called out the whole catalog percentage thing that some reviewers do. 8:26 - 10:31 So close and yet so very far away from perfect. Now that these systems are getting into later generations of emulation, analogue triggers and their continued use during gameplay must be sorted out. That much dead zone is inexcusable and cramping during an FPS will end your playtime quick. As much as they want it to be compact, a little extra plastic to help ergonomics may be in order. On a side note incase the company sees this... PLEASE start making these things with back buttons. as small as they are, having back buttons for L3 & R3 would be very helpful.

Thanks for the honest review. The screen having such a big downside pretty much convinced me to pass on the rp4/pro for now. A good screen is undeniably important for a handheld and I just cant accept something thats consideref mid range to have a poor one. Its the same reason I passed on the og steam deck and didnt pick one up until the oled released. Really hope they can adjust the analog trigger ranges and the color balance in software or before shipping, because otherwise this really does a lot of what I want out of a handheld. Android with decent gamecube/wii performance, and functional 3DS are the big ones for me, thats the era of video games I'm most attached to I guess, including the n64 a bit. Stuff like Star Fox 64/Adventures, Defender (GC), Wind Waker, or some of the 3DS zelda/fire emblem games. I'm particularly concerned about the triggers since some games (looking at you defender) have different functionality for a light press or a 'click' of the trigger, and poor analog control will make that hard to manage in emulator, necessitating rebinding the click functions to other keys.

In your opinion, is it possible that they are going to be able to overcome the panel’s green bias with software? I would guess it is not possible, but it you seem to have more experience with this than most. I worry that the rest of the review community is brushing this issue aside when retroid tells them they will fix it with “adjusting the saturation”. I just think other reviewers don’t understand color science when they take a statement like that as truth.

It's possible. That's why I showed the Win 4 data from when I fixed that screen with software to set expectations. Unlike PC handhelds, you need the manufacture to do this kind of correction for you. So I will just wait and retest. That all being said, it's not a saturation issue.

@@TakiUdon thanks for your take. When I heard the US rep tell the reto-handheld crew about a “saturation” fix during their live stream, my BS meter jumped. Hopefully it is just a telephone game issue, where everyone on the receiving end doesn’t have the technical expertise when it comes to color science. Fingers crossed for all that purchased Retroid will deliver a fix.

This is what I was looking for a year or two ago; I can't impulse buy it since I have an OG Deck these days so it's not really justifiable anymore. The pocketable size would sure be great though! Maybe something I'd pick up in summer.
