This is a video I've wanted to make for ages! I hope it helps you get the best out of your PS2! A point I did not make in the video was the flicker filter settings which some games called it anti aliasing! This will put a blur or bilinear filter on the screen & it will reduce image sharpness! If the game looks blurrier than normal, check the options in the game you are playing to see if this feature is turned on! Turn it off & the image will look sharper! I've also seen it dubbed as soft (flicker filter on) or sharp (flicker filter off) Silent Hill 3 & Tekken 5 are examples of this! The feature might be hidden as it is in Silent Hill 3! Hope this helps improve your PS2 video output!

I've got pretty much every cable possible for the PS2! I bought an S-Video cable back in the early 2000's (can't remember where from, but I don't think I imported it and it was way before Amazon was a thing here, so don't know how I got one). On a CRT it really is the best option, it made the games really come to life. Don't know what it'd be like on a HDTV as I don't think I have one on any of the telly's in the house, might check the Bravia later if I remember. Official Sony component works well enough on my 32" upstairs TV, but I expect it'd break down on the bigger one downstairs. I did buy a kit some years ago that has a component set (didn't need it!) and some DVD that was supposed to upscale the picture, but that was useless. Still, now I have two component cables! I don't know if we'll ever really get to a point where PS2 looks as good on HDTV as it did on CRT.

A lot of people seem to have S-Video cables, which is very interesting! From the UK, this cable was not common & Composite or SCART were our dominant cable types :) A lot of people seem keen on CRT & I'm lucky to have the OSSC upscaler which helps my retro games remain nice on even 4K displays but I do understand why many people say CRTs are best :) I'll always prefer HDTVs but that's just me :)

If it's a TV the display will automatically do it as it has one built in :) As for monitors I assume the same thing would happen but if not, you'd either need to use software like OBS which has several options (Yadif 2x I'd recommend or Retro which is bob deinterlacing) :) Or perhaps video players like QuickTime which can double as video input solutions might have this too although OBS is more flexible :)

@jackgill3675 Hmmmm very odd, I've only run into this issue once :) First check out your TV settings to make sure everything is good there & check out your colour profile (Full or Limited & make sure they match the device) Then check the game settings since most PS2 games have brightness sliders :) If these don't solve the problem the issue will either be the component cable or the upscaler :) If they are the problem, the only way to fix it is to get a decent upscaler (like the Retrotink) a good component cable or if nothing else, you could always try emulation :)

I still have a SD CRT and real PS2 hardware for sentimental reasons, but these old PS2 games run and look better on the emulator and modern display. I played "black" at 60fps on the PCSX2 emulator and it was a much better experience (aiming at 30fps on the real PS2 feels laggy). Also, the CRT phosphor mask (I recommend guestHD CRT mask) allows me to get way more detailed and sharper image (PVM-like picture quality) compares to standard SD CRTs. For example, on my SD CRT I can barely read anything on the GTA SA map. On my LCD monitor however everything is perfectly readable despite the same 480i resolution. I always thought PS2 games looked best on my SD CRT, but I just wasnt aware of how much detail I was missing because of that extreme CRT blur.

@PabloB888

@TheAffroShowGameplay OSSC will give you perfect sharpness on modern displays, but I'm not a fan of this upscaler because it makes the pixels look like big squares (it increases pixelation). To the human eye, glowing subpixels never appear as squares, but rather blend into something that looks rounded. The CRT phosphor mask turn upscaled square pixels into round pixels again, so it's like looking at native image. The same 480i will look much less pixelated without losing sharpness. Just imagine your OSSC output without pixelation. On PC people can use emulators with reshade (+ guesthd crt phosphor mask optimized for 640x480 resolution with sony aperture grille mask in the shader parameters) to get that PVM like picture quality in PS2 games, but on a real PS2 hardware only expensive retrotink 4K upscaler is able simulate CRT / PVM phosphor mask. In fact, Retrotink 4K CRT masks are even better compared to the guest CRT shader (Reshade), because Retrotink also has HDR, so you can have CRT phosphor mask at 100% opacity allowing you to get perfect image without blown out colors / contrast. Retroarch on PC also has HDR shaders, but it's PS2 core is not as good at emulating PS2 games as PCSX2, therefore I'm using guestHD crtmask. I have spend some time do adjust colors and contrast, but now I'm 100% happy with the results.

Hello sir but i have to disagree with you, you are forgetting about how dithering is being used on PS2. I think when the game is running on 480p, the color of the game shows the dithering. PS2 is designed to play on SDTV 480i with composite cable so it can hide the dithering effect in the game. Pumping resolution on PS2 is not the best solution to it, because it will show more the dithering color on PS2. Second things are the jaggies resolution when you do upscaling or pumping the resolution it's still shown. The blurriness on Composite cable is the anti-aliasing effect designed for PS2. So, I think assuming the Composite cable is worst is a bit misconception too.
@TheAffroShowGameplay

While I respect your opinion & I do understand why many, many people think this, I have to disagree back :) First off, if this is the case, why did game developers or Sony bother making all the effort to make the PS2 support 480p or all these other cables? While dithering & jaggies are common on PS2, even 480i games had dithering sometimes (Colin McRae Rally 04 had loads). Also, I recently went to a games festival in the UK & they had CRT's running RGB SCART & guess what I saw on them when playing PS2 games... Yes, dithering xD I feel most people are so accustomed to Composite on a CRT when playing PS2 that everyone assumes it is the only way when it isn't, not even in the CRT world:) Ultimately, we can decide & choose how we want our games to look & if this is your preference, fair enough but this is not for everyone, especially not me & never has been, not even when this was the norm back in the 2000s!

The great thing about the PS2 is that the RGB SCART connection can do 480p (progressive scan) via sync on green compatible monitors, not just component, both the OSSC and the retrotink 4k can do sync on green. Sadly the only PAL games I know that do progressive scan are Project Zero 3 and Tekken 4, sadly the PAL version of Tekken 5 only gave you the option to choose from 50hz and 60hz video. 4:3 is also the best picture quality compared to 16:9 anamorphic since they both share the same horizontal resolution. Just 16:9 stretches it out.

Another option I have had the opportunity to test in recent years is the VGA output of the PS2, but which is limited by the low compatibility of games (officially it can only be used with the Linux Kit) and by finding a CRT monitor - I don't take LCDs into consideration 😆- that is compatible with the RGsB signal. I modified a PS2 to have an RGBHV signal when in VGA mode to be able to use it with my monitor and it's simply beautiful! 😍

RGB-Scart on a Sony 100hz Trinitron, with no hideous scanlines
@PabloB888

I still have a SD CRT, but PS2 games look way too soft on it, especially when connected with an RGB scart cable, because most SD CRTs disable the sharpening filters when using RGB input. PS2 looks much better and sharper on PVM and CRT monitors, but these are relatively small (screen size) and big at the same time (even a 17" CRT is quite big and heavy). Fortunately, it's now possible to emulate CRT phosphor masks on modern high-resolution displays, and the results are stunning, giving you PVM-like sharpness on a much larger screen. For example I can barely read anything when I open the map in san andreas on the SD CRT. Same game, same resolution with phosphor filter on LCD and I can read everything easily. The difference in sharpness and clarity is so great that 480i almost looks like an upscaled image on the SD CRT, and HD like on modern high resolution LCD. You could argue that LCD is no match for CRT when it comes to picture quality aspect (contrast, colors, blacks and especially motion clarity), but 4K QD OLED delivers CRT-like picture quality :). I had to spend some time configuring the CRT masks, but now I'm so happy with the results that I don't even want to play PS2 games on my SD CRT anymore. It's crazy how good PS2 games (480i/p) look on my PC monitor thanks to the CRT phosphor mask, the image is clean and sharp (native like). Without the phosphor mask, 480i/480p upscaled to 4K looks terrible, and that's the only reason so many people kept their CRTs for so long, but now CRT phosphor emulation changed everything.

@@TheAffroShowGameplay There is no noticeable difference in picture quality between SCART RGB and Component on the PS2, since PS2 games run in limited RGB anyway, and your TV can convert YPbPr to limited RGB LOSSLESSLY. There is no advantage to using SCART RGB, in fact most TVs that have both inputs will probably work better with the Component input, as the SCART RGB input on LCDs was usually very poor and only included for compatibility reasons. For example, 480i looks much better on my old Sony W705 LCD when I use component. The same 480i looks much less defined and worse overall when I use scart RGB. On my Panasonic GT60 plasma (which has very good Scart RGB processing) the picture quality looks the same on both inputs.

It will reset the video settings from hdmi/other to RCA cable. In case you want hdmi but the previous hdmi setting doesn't work for you, the first question that pops up in SD mode is "we found a hdmi unit, do you want to use it?", and all you need to do, in blind, is to just press X and it will auto set to hdmi instead, making the image visible again.

What’s best way to play ps2? On ps3 backwards?
@TheAffroShowGameplay
2 ай бұрын
The best way to play PS2 depends on what you want :) PS3 is a great choice, but the ones that can are very expensive & notorious for breaking down a lot along with their cost :) Emulation is a great alternative, PCSX2 has come a long way & you can upscale the games but not all games work & it's still being optimised:) Real Hardware offers the best compatability & these days you can mod it with hard drives or SD card mods if you want to get ROMS from the Internet as opposed to the disks:) Of course with that you'll need a CRT, a HDTV with analogue inputs or like me, get a HDMI based upscaler like the Retrotink/Retroscaler 2x, the OSSC, the RAD2x line or the Retrotink 5x or 4K for the best video quality for retro consoles, Including PS2 :) Ultimately all methods have their ups & downs & also make sure to invest in S-Video, RGB SCART or Component cables for the best looking video output for PS2 games or HDMI if using a backwards compatible PS3 :) Hope this helps!

Easy solution to play PS2 games through HDMI: mod your non-bc PS3, which allows you to backup and play PS2 games. Very easy solution: PS Plus Premium on PS4/PS5 and its growing library of PS1/PS2/PSP games - plus they are mostly upscaled.

I play everything through PCSX2 these days because I got tired of manually adjusting every game, reformatting corrupted hard drives and stuff But I occasionally plugged it back in to record something and felt using an emulator was too lazy haha, So I personally used an Elgato GCHD from PS3 era, plugged in the official component into it(don't get sucked like me, buy the HD Retrovision component it's just as good) then I use VLC and apply Yadif 2x deinterlacing and then add some sharpness and compress + stretched then sharpened blah blah blah until the dithering became unnoticeable. Man GTA SA is the hardest game in the world to capture xD

@ross3695_basedhax I actually don't mind the dithering & quite a few PS2 games used it :) It is definitely tough to capture interlaced PS2 games but, I personally love the look & the games too :) Everyone has a different opinion but I wouldn't change the look of the PS2 graphics, just wished 480p native support was more widespread 😁

Then you have HDMI adapters which ain't that bad for a cheap plug'n'play solution, paired with GSM can give a decent image quality. Then we have the holy grail of PS2 image output: the HDMI modchip by PixelFX, the RetroGEM, expensive as f*** but bypasses the DAC by tapping directly in the video output of the RSX, giving you a clean unaltered image, can be paired with GSM and other integrated options of the modchip itself for amazing results.

There is definitely alot of mileage to be found from forcing 480p or1080i on games through either Xploder HDTV Player or GS Mode Selector. I would advise doing that, and pairing up the system with a high quality video scaler (i.e. Mike Chi's RetroTink 5X Pro), since that'll give you additional picture control, including further scaling options, besides other niceties like scanlines and masks.
@TheAffroShowGameplay

Don't forget most people will never do these things unlike us & sadly the Tink 5x is very expensive so the OSSC I use is a worthwhile alternative:) GS mode selector is great when it works & I know it was updated a few years ago but it's not an absolute fix :) Also there's still not much choice on the PAL games that don't support 60hz, GS mode selector still only offers 576p for PAL 50hz titles, bit limiting!

I use an HD Retrovision component cable and an OSSC, granted the cost for both is about 190 quid but the picture quality is fantastic.. well as fantastic as you can make the PS2's crappy video signal look anyway.. also one thing I think you missed, in order to get widescreen you need to set the console to 16:9 in the system config menu as some games don't have a widescreen setting in their options and instead look to the system settings and automatically enable widescreen otherwise you'll end up with a stretched 4:3 image.. the Race Driver games automatically set widescreen as an example

Just giving my tips here, Scart RGB is the best connection for PS2, because it is how video is processed internally by the PS2, when choosing Y/Pb/Pr for component video the PS2 needs to convert it's RGB signal to component and there is always a loss in this process. But like you said, you need a true PS2 RGB to see the benefits. And for component cables, oficial or good brand ones is a must, i have cut opened a generic and man, it's so trash made that I don't even know how it even works. All things said, your video is very good and informative without the errors commonly done by pseudo experts here on YT, I will just add more insight on what GSM do, which is internal upscale, it doesn't increase the game resolution, it just force the game to output in your choosen signal and by doing it forcing interlaced games to output in progressive modes like 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, so you don't need a external upscaler like OSSC that you are using in this video, 480p being the most compatible of all options as it mostly act as a line doubler/line 2x.
@TheAffroShowGameplay
2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment & for adding clarity:) However, please bear in mind that the OSSC's line 2x mode is very sharp with 480p & while GS mode selector is great, not every game works with it, so it's not a perfect solution:) Plus, making 480p get a 2x scale to 960p is amazing via the OSSC:) 1080i is interesting but I'll take progressive scan anyday :) I'm glad regardless I can shed true light of the PS2's video output & put some misconceptions to bed :)

You get a sharper image using component over scart here in the US. I have a retro tink and I get a softer image using scart can't do progressive with it.
@TheAffroShowGameplay
2 ай бұрын
@TheSocialGamer Very Interesting as both will give the same image quality as long as the cable is good :) Which Retrotink model do you use? My OSSC allows 480p Via RGB because it supports RGsB which is needed when the PS2 displays 480p over SCART:) Quality cables are a must too, again, RGB SCART cables not made specifically for the PS2 can also have negative image quality output :)
@ZinhoMegaman
2 ай бұрын
@@TheAffroShowGameplay You are right, there is no comparisson between OSSC and GSM, but forcing 480p via GSM with OSSC Line 2x give a much better result than using OSSC's deinterlacing for example, and like I said, 480p is the more compatible GSM mode, which is what I recommend for everyone. There is another method, a boot disc called Xploder HDTV Player that came much before GSM, but it's less compatible than GSM and only 480p is full screen, other modes have black bars.
@TheAffroShowGameplay

@ZinhoMegaman I think your point here is spot on & while 480p is absolutely better than 480i, sadly you have to sometimes accept interlaced video as not every PS2 game will work with forced 480p:) But when it works, the difference is worthwhile ☺️
