SATA 1 won't matter that much because it only affects sequential speeds, while SSD's biggest advantage over HDD's are random speeds (measured in IOPS). In short, the time it takes to jump between each little file is instantaneous, while HDD's had to physically move their head (needle) across the disk. This is what greatly improves overall speed in many tasks, regardless of the maximum sequential speed, or whether you are using NVME or SATA.

@@stephenxs8354 PS3 is "agnostic" to its storage to a certain degree, but I'm happy to learn more if you ellaborate. Its CPU asks for a certain asset (like a small texture, that is loaded into the RAM and later managed by the GPU). And it's the storage (HDD/SSD) that looks for that particular file before loading it. SSD does this almost instantaneously. I have seen this with my eyes in the original RAGE game for example. So I don't deny that PS3 has other bottlenecks where SSD's can't totally help, but I'm very sure of this behaviour in PS3, PC's and other consoles as well.

@MrDarkSephirot

Games like Silent Hill, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and Dino Crisis having different resolutions in menus, load, and play as normal. If you have the discs it'll play as emulation. the store loads fast which was a surprise. It's also quieter I'm guessing due to the HDD being one of the culprits. Literally zero mention of drive health and longevity issues that an SSD faces on PS3, a system that does not even know what an SSD is. Disc based games in particular (unless it's COD, which breaks BR lasers instead) are constantly caching data on the drive instead of streaming directly from the disc. That means the SSD is constantly writing and erasing data as you are playing, the one thing that erodes SSDs and the PS3 does not even support TRIM. There is virtually no information out there on how PS3 handles SSDs in the long run. People in the PS3 dev community saying don't use them, Rebbitors saying they are the greatest thing ever with no downsides, people here blindly quoting said Rebbitors and then these videos with unironic Amazon links to go buy the things and no mention of their one major drawback.

The biggest difference in load times will come from open world games and most games that came out late in the consoles lifecycle that have data installed on the drive prior to being playable. The differences will be even greater if your games are being ran 100% from the SSD/HDD rather you copy your disc via Multiman or buy off PSN. Ex: Launching GTA 5 from disc and my loaded 120GB stock HDD was taking 3 minutes to load into Franklin's house. With an SSD, it was ~2 minutes if I recall correctly. When I copied the game completely to the SSD, it took 55 seconds, which is roughly what it takes to load the PS4 version on the PS5's internal drive. A monumental difference. The differences will be marginal in most other cases it's true, but in this day and age you can a 1TB SSD for ~$60USD which is a steal compared to what I paid this time 2 years ago at $86. Almost no point in NOT getting one today

I saw a video onthis before, and before I watch the res tof this vidoe I wil coment before i see result The vidoe I saw before showed nearly zero improvement, not worth it for performace. HOWEVER! I still highly recomend doing it! If you put an ssd, and this next part if VERY IMPORTANT, and you keep is below 80% capacity, alt all times, then it wil last very very long. What kills SSD drives is wriing and overwriting. but the beauty of a ps3 hard drive, most data is never overwritten. Just th egame files stay static and unchanging. So an SSD can potentially last much MUCH longer in a ps3 than a pc. Keep under 80% capacoty though becausde the drive must sometimes erase and reflash data on there in the background, and it will smartly spread the rewrites out evenly. But if u have a small amount of space left, it will rewrite to refresh the same empty spot over and over and over. Bottom line, keep it under 80%, and that goes for pc too, if you can. Also, make sure do not put your ps3 into long term storage for a long long time unpluged. The SSD will lose data after a certain amount of time if it is not powered on at all.

U made something true to a point, sure r/w data reduces longevity of cells in SSD - how much it depends of the model and type of cells used . How ever. Flash memory is non volatile memory. Having power left on will have 0 effect on longevity of the data. Sure there is a method of refreshing cells with data but its not found on cheap drives - it requires to have unit in permanent ON mode and not in Stand-by - and it has the effect of wearing down the cells which You tried to warn people about. I can get in deeper on this subject, with tiny details and benefits/exceptions/drawbacks but as a general rule, power is not needed for deep storage.

Thus my conclusion that if it is left powered off for an extremely long time u might lose data. Esle why does the drive automatically slowly reflash data on the drive when it is powered on?

@@duhmez On much more expensive drives it sort of works like that , but drive needs to be powered on , it will do nothing if the console is on stand-by - drive isn't getting power at all in a stand-by mode. Remember LTT goes in to a point on things they review , but its hardly in depth review how things work in real life - they are on quick and informational videos to get the views and sponsors for daily videos, in reality they barely scratch the surface on each topic they do , even Linus said it numerous times. So in reality no one knows exact time of the data before it "degrades " that has been written to an flash memory - it can vary widely b/c of the different factors involved, but then its about the same with magnetic media. Do You remember when CD-s were introduced , it was claimed that data will be safe up to a 100 years on it. Sure for example BASF/EMTEC ones with gold were the best as a media to write and store Your data on , but they were like 5x the price, rest were not even close. Most of recorded cheap discs You could actually rewrite even after 5-6 years cause when even stored right , data just vanished from them , like the recorded layer cured it self back to original state. You put them in Your drive and it shows empty ready to be recorded. So who really knows. Just for test i just took out my 30 GB SSD from storage - it hasn't been used since 2013. I copied all data from it without any errors and its 95 % filled . I cant say more what will happen after 20 years , but i doubt at that point no one is gonna care much about anything . Also people are still finding consoles that have not been used for 20 years with flash media with save games and they work fine, even left in the attic or basement .

My attitude is that even if there's not a huge difference in speeds, having an SSD future proofs my console against hard drive failure down the line. Or at least for the foreseeable future.

How did you make this video and not test level load times of digital downloads? That's where the vast majority of the benefit could potentially be had. How did you not think to download inFAMOUS (which everyone got for free when PSN got taken offline) and test load times between the two drives?

obviously, an ssd is not a lot faster than an hdd in copying or launching a game as long as the data is in sequence… try it with a super fragmented game, disk or file… that is where the ssd performs

In short; Large games (20-30GB+) running on internal storage should see a nice benefit in load times. Probably 22-50% depending on the game.

So if you run the games from using an actual disc copy an SSD isnt worth it? But worth it if you store games on the SSD drive

Do you happen to know what brand is ideal for reliability and quality of HDD for a PS3 Slim CECH-2101A with official firmware? I still play most of my games on disc and some digital; I find that I’m comfortable sticking with the HDD than SSD since performance is not an issue but storage. My PS3 still has the 120GB hard drive from the factory it’s 11 years old and still works with no issues for past 3 months since cleaning.

@@blainelocklair hard cap limit depends of the file system used, common break point is 2GB so if 1.5 TB works -my friend has one in 2TB shouldn't be the problem. However they were not common goods back when PS3 was made so it really only way to know is to try , some people reported problems with large capacity drives - but no one confirmed their drive was 100% was ok , meaning most of them were used/reclaimed form notebooks and they might developed bad sectors or had other issues. At this moment i don't have any of the drives above 1TB to test , so I may get back to You with that info.

I have a PS3 and was thinking of upgrading the hard drive. I was wondering what is the largest hard drive I can use. I've read that you can only go up to 1TB for the internal drive. I have also read that you can use 1.5TB. Do you know the real answer?

For an old hardware like the ps3, it's worth to use an hybrid hdd instead of an proper ssd?.
@unlimitedslash
2 жыл бұрын
Videogames are packs of hundreds/thousands of files, with that said hybrid drives or SSHD'S only copy to the SSD section the most used files (in the case of a PC that would be for example the OS and common used programs like google chrome), a console is made to play games, what you want if you wanna improve load times, reduce pop in etc is random write/read, thats where SSD'S shine, as they can access any file instantly where an HDD has to wait for the platters and the header to align the concrete sector, read/write in multiple passes etc, basically is really slow, even for the less common 10,000 rpm HDD's get nuked in performance by the cheapest SSD, even modern wifi is faster than that, not only that, but HDD's are mechanical, they WILL fail, due to wear and tear.
