Psalm 99 has three parts. The first two sections (vv.1-3and4-5)end with the refrain “Holy is he!” while the third section (vv. 6-9) ends with “the LORD our God is holy!” This repetition of God’s holiness three times reminds the reader of Isaiah 6:3, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” In the New Testament, John writes that he sees the supernatural beings of heaven sing, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8)
This psalm, without title in the Hebrew text, is a triple proclamation of God’s holiness, as Isaiah would later do (Isaiah 6:3).
Psalm 99:1-5
1The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake.
2 Great is the Lord in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name- he is holy
4 The King is mighty, he loves justice- you have established equity; in Jacob, you have done what is just and right
5 Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy.
