Now I remember why DOOM gave me nightmares as a kid. I was playing the playstation version that replaces all the heavy metal with dread.

Everything in this version is WAAAAY scarier... The music makes the hair on the back of your neck, stand up. Also they added a lot of new sounds. The door opening sound is different from the original. Imp's have a weird standby sound that is not in the original. They added a lot of Reverb to the demons moans when you are shooting them.... It really just made this version soooo much scarier.

Oh wow this brings back so many memories. I couldn't recall which version of Doom I had played as a kid, but as soon as I saw that yellow text on the black metal background I remembered the PS1 jewel case. I would have been about nine years old and I remember how those flying skulls scared me. I would creep through the level with the double barrel shotgun at the ready, then I'd turn around and unexpectedly there'd be a giant flaming skull right in my face and I'd be so startled lol. In a way those of us who grew up in the days of simpler games and fewer games had it better. Since there wasn't so many games to choose from you'd be playing the same game for weeks and weeks and months. It wasn't just 'beat game in 7-8 hours, never play again, move on to next game.' You were lucky to ever beat a game at all, and really. And since the hardware was less advanced there was less gimmicky stuff and pointless padding; so you'd learn to master each weapon or each technique and learn the secret of each level. Little details or curious sounds in a particular area weren't just random fluff; oftentimes if something was there, it had a purpose. And that purpose was often a secret. And, most importantly, without internet there was an air of mystery about the games; you never knew if you had seen all the weapons or found all the secrets or seen every enemy since there was no online guide to tell you about it. There was always the promise of some paradigm-changing discovery right around the corner, or sometimes you'd go to school for your friend to tell you about the super cool secret he found and you'd be waiting all day to get home again to try it out for yourself. Ah; those were the days.

I remember my mate inviting me round, saying there was a new Doom which was scarier and much harder than the original. I remember dying several times on this map and agreeing with my friend. This is a sinister, difficult game which upgrades the Doom engine and provides better visuals. The PSX music makes each map legendary but some, like Wormhole and Vesperas, are elevated to a new level by PSX Doom's grimdark feel. Playing the PC version feels like taking a step back in spite of its greater speed, and Doom 64's soundtrack lacks the melancholy anguish of the PSX.

i downloaded the playstation 1 emulator called ePSXe, thereafter i downloaded Final Doom then played it, i was left astounded by the incredibly brilliant graphics compared to how i remembered it on PC resulting from my lack of knowledge at that particular time. The main video plugin i use is Pete's DX6 D3D Driver 1.77 on ePSXe whereby it enables changing of playstation video game's textures and varieties of other features thereby enhancing the physical appearance of playstation games depending on if your PC can handle it, you should figure out yourself which video plugin your PC can handle. For example when aliens or enemy soldiers stand right in front of the player they looked heavily pixelated, i therewith thought it's how it's suppose to be, however i was wrong because back then the only setting i saw on PC version of Doom was for resolution lol, there were no texture, filter or other settings, either that or i didn't know what the fuck was going on, i was much younger lol. Final Doom, as well as The Ultimate Doom and Doom 2: Hell On Earth looks superbly splendid and less pixelated with much more appealingly delightful superior graphics after i changed texture, filter and additional settings. When downloading ePSXe, upon opening it you go to Config, Plugins and then video, there's a soft video plugin called ePSXe GPU 2.0.0. core which can also be used as the main video plugin however it has no texture settings, some 2D and 3D video games might work, however the graphics could appear pixelated and are basic with exception of a filter setting. I also downloaded Tekken 3 which is problematical for my PC lol, if i change texture quality and texture filtering to a higher setting the game lags tremendously, i thereafter decided when playing specificallyTekken 3 i remove all texture settings, filters and additionally set resolution to the lowest possible setting lol, i wonder what is contained within particularly Tekken 3 which causes it to be problematic for my laptop to handle the detailed graphics.

Well i´m playing the vanilla version of Doom64, and it´s like the original, it must be the nostalgia what´s evading you from enjoying it. However, there is a version that really focuses on staying as loyal to the original version as possible, which is doom 64EX, a direct port of the game to PC platform, i really recommend it. Here´s a direct link:sourceforge.net/projects/doom64ex/ And the tutorial, you need the rom of brutal doom 64:kzitem.info/news/bejne/2Zh91n2laoh2dYo Hope it works and makes you feel better now about it.

i have had games in the ps1 with better graphics that ran so much better than this, how could they let this happen ? and computers by the mid-to-end of the 90's were already able to play games like doom 93 and Doom 2 with much much more smothness and frames than this. Medal of Honor for exemple, 3D models running much better than this. There were also games Syphon Filter and Ace Combat, with massive fully 3D maps and fully 3D Models that would run much better. Yes, the 3D models back then for the PS1 some times were slopy, and you could do much better detailed work with sprites, the point is, they had a game that was made apmost entire on sprites, and the enviroment wasn't that heavy, and still manage to get a game running lower than 24fps
