Dr. Zheala Qayyum, MD, MMSc, is the Training Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program and the Medical Director of the Emergency Psychiatry Services at Boston Children’s Hospital. She holds faculty appointments at Yale School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. She is also the Associate Training director for the Boston Children’s Hospital-Tufts Triple Board program. She trained in child and adolescent psychiatry and consultation liaison psychiatry, and subsequently completed a Master’s in Medical Education at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Qayyum has published on the topics of medical education, the impact of patient suicide on psychiatrists, autism spectrum disorders, inpatient treatment of early psychosis, and risk of youth suicide and firearms. She has particular interest in the areas of supervision and mentorship, psycho-oncology and palliative care.
She also serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves Medical Corps and deployed to Afghanistan, and later was mobilized in support of the COVID-19 response to New York.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to understand the experiences of both trainees and supervisors in the event of patient suicide.
2. Participants will be able to identify the 3 factors that influence the experience of the trainees and supervisors when a patient suicide occurs.
3. Participants will be familiarized with key aspects of support and supervision needed for trainees in the event of patient suicide.
