A way to work around this is to have the psychic pick out amongst a crowd of 100 volunteers whom th psychic can sense are promoting their psychic power and have the ones hindering the power leave the room. That or have a study done to weed out those who are non-suggestible. And then set up camera equipment and have everyone leave the room and have the psychic admit that the circumstance they are in suits their needs. Might take some coaxing and very strict parameters that both James and the psychic agree to.

I think it's two things: 1.He said once, I believe, that he wanted to lose the challenge - that he really looked forward to someone demonstrating undebunkable powers of some nature in front of him. Skepticism isn't about wanting someone else to be wrong, but rather hoping that they are right but holding them to a standard to demonstrate that. 2.I think some of those people had convinced themselves that they had powers. If someone isn't a malicious fraudster, then being mean to them does no good. They're about to be exposed on TV - that's enough cruelty. He reserved his true spite for people like Uri Gellar and Peter Popov, who took advantage of others..

What always worries me is how gullible so many people are. It's pretty much the same mentality that keeps religions going. I understand that it's an evolutionary thing in that millions of years ago, our ancestors that reacted to false positives were more likely to survive and produce offspring than those that didn't. For example, if your ancestor saw shadows in the long grass and assumed it was a sabre-toothed tiger, they woud run away when in fact it was merely the wind moving the grass. Conversely, if another looked at the shadows moving in the grass and assumed it was just the wind, but it turned out to be that sabre-toothed tiger, then they're not going to be around for very long. This means that, as a species we've evolved to be much more inclined to attribute agency to things we see happening but don't understand what it is we're seeing and consequently assume something extraordinary is causing it to happen, hence the levels of superstition and belief in the supernatural that our species exhibits.

I don't mind people claiming to be psychics for entertainment. But when comes to taking advantage of desperate people to profit, then I have a problem. RIP James Randi, great work!

@@sambryant8646 I'm glad you're not changing how you think about him now you know he was gay, but just out of interest, no judgement, why would finding out he's gay change how you would feel about someone? it just seems like such a strange thing to say.

Love this man. Kept manipulation and exploitation at bay just by the tool of greed for those who dare to challenge. Favorite quotes: People are going to Believe what they truly "want" to believe.
