A psycho-biography of Reiner Braun, a fictional character in Attack on Titan, via Kleinian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. Music: • Attack on Titan: Origi... • Attack On Titan Final ...
Even if it's only 20 comments, thanks so much for the lovely feedback, folks. Given where the series is at now, I thought it would be good to do a Zeke psycho-profile. Most likely it won't be as long as this one, but I'm already working on it. One thing to note is that I would really like to upload regular content, as I have so many ideas. Yet, I work full time in a clinical setting now, and I'm working towards funded research later this year. It's ruddy exhausting. So I will work on the Zeke vid and will see whether it is tenable for me to keep making content on the regular :)

Oh my god I can’t wait to see what’s up next! This video is one of the best character analysis I have seen and really one of its kind-psychoanalysis! I’ve always got interest in this field but I don’t know where to start. Your video introduced me to various topics which I think are good starting points. However where do you think is a good start for studying psychoanalysis? Also I wonder what are your thoughts on Eren Jaeger? I know that the ending is a big disappointment for a lot of people, so I’m curious to know how you make sense of it (or whether it seems absurd to you too) from a psychoanalytical perspective. By the way, have you considered adding closed captions for your videos? I know it takes a lot of time, but maybe you can open it up for someone else to do it instead. And sometimes when you overlay text over pictures, the text becomes a bit unclear. Maybe you can consider lower the opacity of the image beneath? I hope these comments are helpful. You really are amazing!

he reminds me a lot of myself, minus the whole split-personality stuff lol your humor is pretty good btw, it wasn't constant and so served as a real break during the breakdown

Same here. Growing up, I was always afraid of consequences. I would strive to keep on my parents good side to avoid confrontation and punishments as much as possible. Like Reiner’s indoctrination. We would both break down when pressure’s too much, and having to cope with whatever mistake we made. It resonates. I’m on the High End of the Spectrum so…
@OliverCovfefe

@@icemountaindragon5057 I never had avoidance issues from growing up, but did after a lot of personal stuff went down in my life. I moreso have a lot of guilt that I couldn’t struggle with and just buried instead, but that was far worse for me. I didn’t develop a split but I did get extremely depressed as he was. I hope it gets easier for you, just try to achieve that balance between asserting yourself too much and not asserting yourself enough. We all have issues in the end, but sometimes may mess up if we try to force the change instead of taking it gradually. Gl.

To me, Reiner definitely has DID, especially since he's really got the "soldier" and "scout" personalities that conflicted, seemingly without any connexion with the both. And after that, there is the Reiner personality, the "original" one. Basically, his "soldier" personality emerged when Marcel Gaillard got eaten by Ymir. The second emerged to better get hold of the trauma of basically destroying Shiganshina. I , wouldn't say that he's schizoid since he doesn't have several symptoms of schizophrenia like hallucinations. But dissociative identify disorder, that's for sure.

Just found this video as I go through an Attack on Titan youtube binge (just caught up with the thus-far released anime after forgetting all about it for a few years). While some of the terms here went over my head, I thought this was overall a really great vid that highlights Reiner's mental state very well; I've been able to understand and appreciate his character much more on my second watch of the series. I only noticed a couple moments where the mic sounded a bit off, otherwise it was pretty good imo. :) Hopefully my comment helps the algorithm a bit!

I wonder if the armored titans ability is its plot armor, like Reiner's persistence and seeming inability to die, like how he somehow put his consciousness in his titans nervous system, that's my headcanon at least

Thanks mate! Eren is not as complete a picture as say Reiner or Zeke I find. And I don't mean that in the 'wow mysterious' sense, but in terms of storytelling I don't think we are given enough narrative material to sound enough interpretations come part 4. The theme of freedom just becomes an empty signifier (maybe that was the point but it escapes meaningful negation). Maybe that's a project in itself however
@blahblahblah8691

@@chevuoi8505 would you mind elaborating on that, especially the empty signifier part? I think the development (or lack of it) and whether he is a complete character is quite an interesting topic too

I would say that the paranoia was the impending doom of having to face eren and the survey corps haunted him and I think this is seen finally when meets eren during the declaration. For the schizophrenia I think it could’ve been developed due to the paranoia and the split personalities. ( commenting this before watching the video )
