I think there is more symbolism in My Hero Academia then just All Might that you mentioned in the video. I think BNHA comments a bit on the idea of privilege in society. With Todoroki and Bakugo and their quirks representing the upper class of society. Todoroki was accepted into UA without having to take the same entrance exam as other kids. And Bakugo was constantly praised for his quirk and how strong he was, no matter what he did. It shows that just because of the situation these people are born into, they are treated better by society. And the same goes for Midoriya representing minorities or the lower class of citizens. He was born without a quirk and therefore is treated differently. He has certain jobs and opportunities completely closed off to him because of this. He was also mistreated by the "upper class" such as Bakugo and other classmates. Its also pretty cool that because Midoriya came from nothing, he appreciates everything that he is given so much more. He is able to help normal citizens, as well as the heroes (Iida, Todoroki) that are suppose to be saving the citizens. He's the best hero, not because of the quirk that he was given, but because of the attitude and the beliefs that he developed as someone who came from nothing.

This black and whiteness isn‘t just shown through Stain actually being a good one (imo) with bad plots, it is also shown through Endeavor being the #2 Hero, but being abusive to his wife and children just so he or one of his children can beat All Might. It also kinda shows, that you should never judge somebody just through their appearance. Bakugo being arrogant, egoistic and everything a good character that in the end would switch to the villains have, but still he is a good guy. Nobody would actually think, if somebody like this existed in reality, that he would stay on the good side forever. But Bakugo has such a strong will and I personally would never think of him even thinking about switching sides. Also the series shows that, even if you are smart af, you aren‘t perfect. Nobody is ever perfect. Todoroki being such a strong and smart character but still failing an exam shows and having struggle to use his quirk just through his childhood, that even a character that is shown to be perfect, isn‘t. Bakugo, (I talk about him a lot xD) being a genius, having very good tactical skills and being strong, has just an ass-personality. Midoriya being the main-character, which is mostly written as „perfect“, having such big struggles with his quirk. And something I like about BNHA too: They think every Backstory through and make the goals and personality after this. Uraraka wanting to help her family by becoming a superhero and getting money. Kirishima having a past without friends and wanting to be like his favorite hero. Toga who was let down just because of her quirk. Shigaraki was also let down and then just met a person who showed him the wrong path. Twice becoming insane from his quirk. Some of them are side-characters - characters where you mostly not really expect a backstory (especially if they are villains) - but they still gave them a backstory and based their personalities off them.

5:22 Everyone is NOT a hero. Yes there are lots of heroes, but there are also a lot of people in normal jobs like we have today. And All Might being the singular Symbol of Peace has caused complacency to be a major issue in Japan. Both civilians and heroes rely on All Might to solve problems without taking personal responsibility. This is why when he is gone, crime rate begins to go up and more panic settles in(though we here of this, I really wish we would see more examples of this in Hero Aca). All Might's words are "I am here" which means he is always here to rescue the day... except when he's not. Deku's words are hidden in the true meaning of his hero name "You can do it". When Deku saves someone, he inspires them that they can be a heroes too, they just have to do something: All Might, Uraraka, Todoroki, Iida, Kota, and for manga readers (Eri and Gentle)

Alan Moore admits he hasn't even read many superhero comics since the 1980s. He hasn't seen how the genre has developed and incorporated criticisms in the thirty years since he wrote Watchmen. It's more self-reflexive than he gives it credit for.

Am I the only one who thinks Alan Moore is an overated edglord who hates fun and only sees the worst in people? Yes people suck but other times they can be great if they just believe in themselves and the potential in others. Morality isn't shades of gray or black and white it's a mess of conlficting colors all splatered together one man's black and white is another's red and blue a hero in my eyes is someone who agnowalges this but still chooses to protect all those who's morality aligns with his own belife in good that the Inocent should be protected and the guilty punished for their crimes aginst said inocents. Alan Moore is a bitter angsty man who's work while thought provokeing isnt the only why to see the world and personaly I think Watchmen ruined superheroes as everyone has been trying to replicate it since but it doesn't work that way!

From my point of view, I can see that HeroAca actively criticizes and subverts tropes from both the superhero and shonen genres, while at the same time honouring and paying homage to them. For starters, Deku breaks the cliché of the overly strong, moronic yet good-hearted Shonen protagonist (We can thank Goku for popularizing this trend). Rather, he starts as a weak and powerless yet thoughtful and knowledgeable outcast in a world full of superpowered individuals, and is put in contrast with his bully Bakugou, who has in turn grown conceited due to the alleged superiority his powerful quirk gives him. Deku's traits are not groundbreaking, since it has been seen in other works such as KHR's Tsuna and Yu-Gi-Oh's Yugi. But the difference comes from that social divergence Deku and Bakugou have, people expected a lot from the latter but nothing from the former. This is in concordance with Alan Moore's opinion on the current Superhero-loving society, the society presented in MHA has been infantilized and leans towards escapism, they are fanatical with power. This social obsession is where the problems of many main characters (such as Deku, Bakugou, Shoto, Endeavor and Stain) originally stem from. This is gracefully subverted by All Might, the staff and the students of UA, who show the readers and the main characters that there is worth beyond power and popularity.
@beastvicious8672

Goku atleast isn't a self insert pandering character like Deku. Deku is also handed his powers by his idol. He becomes the most popular person in the hero class pretty much immediately. There's an underlying reason for this. The author wants to create a fantasy for bullied otaku, where they're set in another school and everyone loves them. Bakugo the guy who bullies him, confesses his insecurities to his victim. It's very unrealistic unless you live in a fantasy, which is what MHA is. It's like they're aliens trying to immitate human behavior.

LOL, great video but, Alan Moore has literally ALWAYS hated superheroes. His most famous works are a deconstruction of the superhero genre (and these are all unbelievably fantastic, btw). For decades he hasn't missed an opportunity to denigrate the genre that kept his medium alive. But then again he notoriously dislikes damn near everything. I wouldn't give as much weight to the words of this man. And more to the point, I think America's conservative party's decades long flirtation with racist, reactionary politics has much more to do with the election of Donald Trump than the goddamn box office.

you seem to be focusing too much on the wrong side of the arguments. maybe moore's critique bothered you so much because you enjoy the marvel and dc movies? if so i'd get that, because i do too. furthermore i also think that he contradicts these things because other times he says the superhero genre has devolved due to becoming too mature, as opposed to be for kids, which was the original aim of the golden age superheroes. but none of that matters here, because his critique is on point. we do seem to be mired in a culture of mainstream insipid 'the-heroes-will-save-the-day-and-us-the-civilians-need-only-cheer-as-hard-as-we-can-and-avoid-that-debris'. at best, it's lazy storytelling, at worst, it's sending all the wrong signals. we don't want a generation growing up thinking that a saviour will come and snap his fingers and magically solve all the problems. especially when we already have full-blown religious myths about the second coming of such figures (christ, vishnu, buddha etc). we need stories that emphasize the irreplaceable and important role that everymen and everywomen like us play in changing a society. which is why mha is a breath of fresh air. almost. and in regards to your last point, sure i agree the goddamn box office did not put trump in power, but shit like that doesn't help either, especially when people are desperate. the pm of my country is considered to be some revolutionary who's going to shoot us at the top of the strongest nations list. and it pisses me off when i see movies and stories promoting that kind of delusional thinking. fuck, too long this comment

In many ways fiction is just a representation of reality through a tainted lense. Fiction takes a lot of inspiration from reality. Movies like star wars, capital America show horrors of world war 2 and the dichotomy between good and evil where evil is mostly a guy with soldiers (Hitler) and good is basically America and it stands as a symbol of peace and freedom. But I am sure you knew about this already but what is more important is that most representation of reality in fiction are more nuanced and carefully crafted.

American Superheroes are just straight up corny. Watching Modern superhero movies (while impressing me with their expensive effects) never give me the story development i need. Without stirring in politics, it's like getting to know a Brick Wall from Space. Or a Fence who's parents died. They don't delve into the characters as 'characters' enough, & even if they do, it's just the retelling of stories we already know. They're just strong guys that save the world with lots of fighting & no substance for what the fights actually represent.

Superhero stories and movies are popular because they are simple. They're easy to follow, and that always brings in tons of people because anyone can relate to them. That's the appeal of them. It's just entertainment, a way for people to watch a movie or TV show and just relax after a rough day at work. People love watching these super heroes also because they are special, and that makes us feel special when we relate to them.

I totally agree that American super heros are corny and usually ridiculous, but at least the movies understand that. That's why comedy plays such a big role in the marvel movies today, and why if a movie is too serious it tends to just suck. Have you checked out the recent movies directed by the Russo brothers? They balance both comedy, action and drama pretty well and you can defiantly see a difference when comparing them with the ones that came before.

And for the last the female characters fall on all the cliches, they are cute and have less importance on the battles and story development, overall its a commom shonen.

Really like some of the video's you've made! But I disagree with most of the points in this video. When Deku faces Muscular, he doesn't win becouse he makes the right decision. Which would be to take the kid and try to escape. You know, like Hannes does in AoT. But MHA has no stakes, so even if Muscular is way stronger than Deku. Deku still wins becouse he's the snowflake protagonist and laws of power suddenly just bends to his wishes. The fact that Deku's arms are broken, but he's still able to move them. Is just not realistically possible. Let alone being able to punch with them. It's a power fantasy with no sense of logic or consistency. Allmight pretty much is perfect in his sense of morallity. He's never really challenged mentally. His only flaw is that his power has limits. But this never becomes any real consequence to him, becouse things always work out in the end. That's just how it is in MHA. It never dares to raise the stakes and deal with serious themes. You say Bakugo is forced to change, but i never see this happening. If the show had been realistic with it's characters, Bakugo wouldn't be tolerated by the other classmates. He's always lashing out at people, which would realistically make people distance themselves. Becouse it isn't a very desirable trait. The teachers and class just ignore this aspect completely and he never gets confronted and put in his place for it. The way the author handles the topic of child abuse with Todoroki is just insulting. But that isn't what the video is about, so i'll leave it at that. Everyone might be a hero, but it always revolves around Deku. It's like they're aware of their role as support characters and know that Deku is the protagonist. An example of this is when Todoroki chooses to tell Deku his life story. When they don't even know eachother. It's just forced and only serves to make Deku more important than he is. Another example is when Deku is injured in the hospital and Bakugo is kidnapped. All the classmates chooses to go to his room and ask him what they should do. Despite that he's injured. It's as if they can't do anything by themselves without Deku to be the center of it. Stain is a pretty bad example of a villian. His ideoligy doesn't make sense and serves no purpose. Even though the heroes benefit through money and fame. They still save lives, by doing their job. Stain is just a failed attempt at making a morally grey villian. Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, is a much better example of this archetype. They have pretty similar motives, through it goes much more in depth with Scar and he evolves as a person throughout the story.
