Great video thanks brother. Glad you have the extra engine. I know Ford and few Chevy's call for the cab to be removed. I know for a fact that the diesel engine in the Ford calls for the cab to be removed for the back two cylinders to be worked on. I thought it was a dumb setup but I was told at the dealership by the mechanic the same thing you said. Keep up the great work see you in the next video thanks again

How many miles were on the engine? I own a 2014 F-150 with the 5.4 3 valve, and one of the intake valve's cam followers on number 3, broke and intake valve ruined the head (thankful for that, and not the block) at 82,000 miles. I actually had taken it to Ford Dealer (where I bought) and complained about noise, they changed oil, and said it was better. (This is all on a Ford receipt). Actually on my way back to the dealer when she laid down on me. Changed oil (5W-20) EVERY 5,000 miles per manual. This looks like number 4 cylinder? Q: Why are these engines going out on the right bank rear?

That was pretty slick,here in Florida there's been a promblem with some of the late model Ford's when you do q iune -up an go to change the spark plugs they break off in the heads not sure but it might be the 5.4 s can you shed some light on this or have you not come across this promblem?

the early 2 valve 5.4 and 6.8 had issues with the spark plugs blowing out of the hole and taking the threads out of the head at the same time. i have not had any trouble with the 5.4 and 6.8 3 valve engine since i started to removed them the way i explained in the video.

When I saw the beat up plug I highly suspected it would be coming out the missing valve conformed it and it will be interesting to see just what it will take to put that cylinder back in service, not saying the others wont be freshened up if you repair it. You know when the Mod engines first came out in the 97 trucks and some of the Tbirds Fords and their engineers flat out refused to let techs rebuild them their words was the mod engines was not rebuildable. At first they would send us new engines right off the assembly line if we had a in warranty failure those was nice they came with everything right down to and even the wiring harness on them just plug, fill and go. Later they started sending reman units which was a dead give away. When I left in 05 we hadn't yet rebuilt a mod engine a reman was always cheaper than machine work, parts, and labor on the failures we had seen which was mostly spun rod bearings, rods thrown out the side with over rev codes, oil filters double gasketed that the customer didn't catch till they seized and ate up everything top and bottom the local quick changes and WMs paid for a lot of those here. All and all they are great engines I've seen and heard of many going well over 300k.
@j.c.smithprojects

This is where really knowing your stuff is worth money. Knowing what's likely to be wrong and what it's likely to cost lets you know what to pay for something with problems, and, in this case, make some money at the end, or end up with a better vehicle than you might, perhaps, be able to afford otherwise...

I think, for his own trucks he wants a backup if one of dual tires goes flat. JC can answer that question. It's quite possible to get at least large single tires for tractor trailers and any truck with that size dual wheels. I have seen truckers using them on You Tube. They are about as wide as the dual tires. There are few to none of those here. There must be a law in a state somewhere around here that forbids it. Could be my state forbidding those single tires.
@MoondyneJoe

Hi Bob I am in Western Australia about 100kms from Perth ( in the bush in other words) a few trucking companies that come up my way to collect Gravel for road works have them on their trucks I just wonder if they are singly cheaper than 2 normal tires on a truck ? but I suppose if yo need to replace one it would cost you more than a normal one I just think on a Dualy Ute/ truck like JC's Present project would look great with a pair on the back end I suppose it would be more in line with Brandon's age than JC's or on a Rat Truck anyway it was just a thought . Tony

I agree with you JC and so would a lot of Ford techs that would say pull the cab , doesnt take a lot of time and all the access you need. Nice thing about you pulling the cab on this is that you have another engine to go in, now that you have the old one one out and you'd have been pulling the engine anyways to have a lot easier dissasembly to see where the other parts went and if they cause any major damage and to what and it wont take you long to pop the other engine in and button this up and get er ready to go and your not bent over into all kinds of funky positions to get at things and if a guy has back problems man that aint no fun, trust me I know. Like that deep well socket, I use a socket that is deep that has a wobbly built into it, best money I ever spent, cause when you get near the back of the engine there isnt a whole lot of room to spare. Everytime I see you using the gradall I keep thinking how that is money well spent
@j.c.smithprojects
6 жыл бұрын
this type of work is one of the biggest reasons i bought the gradeall. i can take a cab off anywhere. if you have back issues.....you understand the ease and avoiding bending over for extended lengths of time. that socket works very well....it is just the right length to let me put any length of the snap on wobble plus extension on it that i need.

I didn't even know the v10 was an option in f450+ trucks, I thought they were all diesels so they could justify what they sell f550s for. The more ya know. Lol

Good tunes. Totally right - if you can pull the cab, why not? Why fight it? I sure could use that tow bar you had laying on the ground @ 10:24 to bring a broken bucket truck home! What's the story on that? Looks like medium duty military. Thanks for the video!

Those enj eat a quart of oil ever 500 miles every one of them !And we have over 100 in the fleet.If ford could build a enj they would have a pretty good truck minus the aluminum body's

i have had several of the 3 valve v10 engines and i never experienced them using a quart of oil every 500 miles. does your fllet have high idle times?

I UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT FOR ENGINE SET BACK BUT THIS IS A COMMERCIAL TRUCK IT MAKES FOR LESS FOOT ROOM AND HIGHER LABOR COST.
@screamindemon811
6 жыл бұрын
Well that may be true if you were taking it to a dealer, but since JC is doing this work himself rather than having a shop or dealer do it, labour and parts mark up is something he isnt having to deal with. As for the F550 being aimed more at the commercial end of the scale while that might be true he will have no problems selling it, there are lots of guys who have uses for a F550 single can ext cab crew cab... someone will take it off his hands believe me, they can probably save money by buying a used one from someone like JC than they could at the Ford store. There is a market out there for the truck, trust me

this truck has great foot room. think about how long it takes to remove an engine from a dodge 4500/5500 or a gm 4500/5500...i have done both and i can not get either the dodge or the gm engine out as easy or as fast as the superduty trucks. so i am not sure there is a larger labor time involved for me.

How long depends on how long it takes them to get 300,000 miles on it.

they are very popular in my area and many others. they get the same mpg as the diesel but are far cheaper to buy and maintain.

nothing like having the tools ,equipment and skills to work on trucks.4 hours and the cab off and engine out.It would have taken me all day just to get the engine out let alone diagonose the damage.

i use to do it with a couple of farm tractors that had loaders with forks attachments. this way is far better and faster.

Getting the right parts on the first shot seems to be a crap shoot these days. Hard to find good parts guys who know their stuff. I also like to tear things apart for better access when doing jobs like this. It may seem like a daunting task to some but I'd rather spend 4 hours to save days of fumbling over poor access to work on something in tight quarters

it is rare for this napa to make a mistake. this is probably the second time in several years. taking the cab off is well worth the time to me. changing this engine is much easier for me now.

I read somewhere that removing the cab is SOP for dealerships. Some things are nearly impossible to work on with the cab on. OLF showed us the difficulties when working on his Ford pickup.

Manufactures are not making getting the right parts all that easy either. 2003 dodge 1500 has a completely different hood latch then a 2003, 2500 ! WTF its the exact same body

with the way the engine sits under the cowl, i am not sure how much that would help. the f650 and larger of the same era are pretty tight at the firewall and sides also.

jeff, i think some people are just curious and wonder if it is something they can do. others are just nosy. then there are the ones who want to know just so they can tell me i paid too much, it isnt worth it, or i got ripped off. regardless, i just dont share what i paid for something as i was taught it was rude and could be taken as bragging...neither is my intention.
