I just came across this video because I need to do this same thing. My hats off to you for having to do this in the cold. That add another level of difficulty to the job, I know, I have had to work on cars in the freezing cold. But now, I have to do this procedure in the heat and humidity of Florida, and believe me, it's another level of difficulty. This heat is unbearable.

Aaron. Thank you for this video. I just replaced an alternator in my father's 2007 PT Cruiser and removing the drive shaft is a critical step. Your video helped significantly. I should have watch this first. I followed the Haynes manual which requires removing the steering knuckle from the lower control arm - not bad, but I broke off the bolt head retaining that little monster. Your option of removing the knuckle from the strut seemed much more straightforward. Also, your guidance (speeded up) on re-installing the drive shaft gave me the insight and courage to tap on the end of the shaft to drive it home (lightly with a wooden block covering the hub threads and then some prodding with a hammer). I've also done my share of outdoor work - always in the winter. Seems when I was younger, my cars n-e-v-e-r failed in the summer time.... Take Care, Jimmy B.

Thanks for you comment Jim, I agree that the Haynes manual is good for most things. And it too said to remove the ball joint from the knuckle to replace the cv axle, but being as cold as it was I wanted to try and easier way so I wouldn't have to mess with ball joint and tie rods as they were steady starting to go bad but he couldn't replace them. I found from the the strut saved me from any mistakes with needed a wheel alignment. And yes I find during the summer mine and most of my customers vehicle do really well. Than fall hits and that's when they breakdown from not being take. Care of during summer. Most of my customers are ok with paying the tow truck bill the extra 10 miles to my shop on an acreage as I only charge $40 an hour. or that's were they will drive them and they have a friend pick them up. This one was an exception as it was my sister inlaws best friends father. So I have him a heck of a deal on the car. Parts plus $60 no matter how long it took me.

I admire your resolve on this, outside in the snow, with only hand tools.

Thank you, ya everything I do I try to use hand tools, I have no garage and do side repairs away from the shop as a back yard mechanic to earn a little extra cash, I will say was not a fun job in the cold but pays the bills.

+Don McKiness haha, wasnt even my own car, it was my sister inlaws best friends car that broke down 5 miles from my house while she was passing thru to visit my sister. She lives somewhere like 150 miles from us and i wasn't going to leave her stranded at 16 years old and very little cash for a shop. So i towed it in and replaced the blown cv axle for her

quick question my man, how did you lift up the shock to line back up with the two nuts & bolts?
@AaronsAutomotive

I had used a couple of cheap spring compressors on the the struts coil to compress it enough to be able to man handle the strut back into place without fighting against the spring. I had left that part out due to how dangerous these types of spring compressors are, and if used incorrectly can become very lethal.

Great tips. I hated working on my car in the winter in Indiana.Last time was the blizzard of '78.I would've cut the cotter pin off or used a shorter one.Those were an inch or more too long.

Honestly couldn't tell ya, the car was the daughters of a friend of my mother inlaw and told her id help them out and fix the axle for her as they had no cash and was her only car to work and back. The thing has had a few farmer fixes to it on the electrical.

Good video bud I would just add be responsible to the environment use a drip pan for the fluid also making sure fluid is topped off before you road test. Thanks for the good tutorial.

+Mike M agreed, my drip pan was frozen into my yard, but after the video i did top up the tansmission (was 1/4qt low) and when i moved the car i broke up the contaminated snow/ice and put into a 5gallon pail till it thawed out in the spring and recycled with all the other fluids i had

Do what I did my friend. Move south. I can't begin to tell you how much I just don't miss working out in the freezing cold banging knuckles and such. I have to replace both on my gf's PT.. I almost always replace them in pairs..needed or not.

Summer time here is actually quite nice, and usually I have the vehicles towed to my shop but is 10 miles from my home. And this gentleman could barely even afford the one side, was the father of my sister inlaws friend and shetold him I'd do the work for him for cheap.... So I charged him cost of the parts and $60 labour and took just a hair over an hour. So usually I replace both too at the same time needed or not. But he didn't want to, and actually ended up selling the car at auction just recently.

It's usually a good thing to help someone out when they're strapped for cash. I once practically rebuilt a friends car when he was broke. I didn't make a dime on the job and sure enough he turned right around and sold it for drug money the next day.. I quit doing free work for him after that.. I thought the axle was going on the PTC, BUT it turned out to just be a dragging brake. It sounded 10xs worse than it was.. Now it's about 99° out here which still isn't as bad as banging knuckles in below zero..

Its "gender neutral shift fluid" lol. Trans fluid from when the CV axle got pulled out. I did break up the ice and put it un a pail till spring when it melted and could be disposed of properly
