The interesting thing about this movie is that the creators of this movie had the imagination to join two different genres of movies: Westerns and Dinosaur flicks. Pretty original.

This reminds me of a story I heard once; a group of cowboys were attacked by a giant flying creature, described as "having the head of an alligator, a long tail and bat-like wings". They eventually managed to kill it and proudly nailed it's dead body to the side of a barn, taking a photograph of the men standing under it. The "Lost Thunderbird Photo" has been passed around for years, and it's current location is a mystery.

I love the SFX of this period, but something that I can't stand is the fact that in all this movies, the dinosaus always dies, and most of the time unnecessarily, like in this scene. The girl has already been rescued moron, why you have to kill the animal? When I as kid, I always was sad for all the dead dinosaurs. I know, I know, that was the mentality of the time, I understand, but I don't like it, not just a little bit.

As innacurate as this "Pteranodon" is, I gotta give them props for realistically showing that a Pteranodon wasn`t strong enough to carry a human away. Also couldn't they have found better sound effects for this thing than a chocking pig?

What's with Harryhausen's Pteranodon's having bat-like wings instead of actual Pteranodon wings? I mean no offense to him but the bat wings on his Pteranodons look very inaccurate considering that their wings weren't shaped like that in real life.

If there were a Pterosaur called Pterosaurus, it wouldn't look like that. For starters, it's freaking enormous. The wingspan looks like maybe 12 meters. The beak looks like a meter and a half. Even the largest Pterosaurs weren't THAT enormous. Then, we have the wings. Those slightly resemble bat wings, but look nothing like Pterosaur wings. Pterosaur wings are entirely built around the arm and the pinkie. All other fingers are not used to control the wings. Then, we have the feet. Those are basically eagle claws. Pterosaur feet had short toes, were padded on the bottom, and were plantigrade, meaning the walked on their souls, not on their balls of their feet or their toes. Try grabbing a dog and lifting it with your feet and you'll see why this is unrealistic. They couldn't have grabbed anything, let alone a person. In reality, it would probably just land, stab them, and then eat them, or maybe fly off with them in its jaw. It's beak is too small for its body, as is its crest. In reality, most large, beaked pterosaurs had huge beaks, about 1/4th of their own wingspan in length. Giant flying animals cannot just hover in mid-air like helicopters. Repeat, CANNOT. It's wings would literally fall off and it would consume so much power that it would boil itself alive. This is why vultures circle, instead of just hovering over their potential meal. Giant pterosaurs had proportionally short wings. Medium-large pterosaurs never got to even half those dimensions. The head and neck is clearly based around Pteranodon, which had a wingspan of 7 meters, not 12, or whatever that is, and weighed less than a human adult. Also, the wing membranes connected all the way to the heal, and on both sides of the arm, thanks to the Pteroid bone.

Your wrong actually. Pterodactyls and Pteranodons grew just as big, if not bigger than the one shown in this film. Second, all pterosaurs had sharp talons to catch prey and scaly wings that resemble that of bat wings. The beak matches every pterodactyl fossil in known history so this is actually a very accurate pterodactyl.
@stegosaurus5461

@@spicymemes2489 Aren't you that idiot who thinks pterodactyls are dinosaurs that evolved into bats, Brontosaurus lived in swamps and is the real name for Apatosaurus, footprint fossils formed from hard ground instead of mud and sand, birds are all poultry and did not evolve from dinosaurs, raptors have gecko-like scales instead of feathers, T. rex is top-heavy because of its massive head, and dinosaurs are giant lizard monsters that dragged their tails because that somehow balances their bodies?

The pterosaurs in this film were erroneously given bat's wings (you can see the two long fingers supporting each wing membrane). They were also wrong in One million years BC (perhaps they used the same model?) The wings of bats, birds and pterosaurs are very different and often used to illustrate the concept of convergent evolution. Interestingly, even when Willis O'Brien animated pterosaurs for King Kong back in the 1930s they had the correct kind of wings.

Some fun facts: I believe Valley was loosely based on a 1950s unused idea. VALLEY OF THE MIST was another Willis O'Brien project that put humanity in contact with dinosaurs . This time , a boy hunts down a giant lizard in a hidden valley . He intends to trade it for his prized bull , which has been sold by his father . Originally titled Emilio and Guloso , then El Toro Estrella ( The Star Bull ) , screenwriter William " Bill " Lasky created a new screenplay from O'Brien's treatment and gave it a new title : Valley of the Mist . Bill hoped to get his father , the legendary Jesse L. Lasky , founder of Paramount Pictures , to green - light the picture . The film was to have been shot in Mexico , in full Technicolor . However , no studio would agree to finance a movie that involved so much special effects animation after the perceived overspend on Mighty Joe Young . This was a film that Ray would undoubtedly have worked on had it gone ahead.

The humans are an exceedingly dull lot , losing out to the latex creations in the acting honours !
