defensebaseactl... (Maitland, Florida) (Cocoa Beach, Florida) Garfinkel Schwartz lead counsel Brian Wiklendt talks frankly to families of private military contractors about the problems that they face surrounding PTSD.
If a loved one returns from Iraq or Afghanistan with PTSD, family may not understand or even recognize the effect it has on the family.
If the individual with PTSD is in denial, there is a further challenge in addressing the issue.
Instead, Brian talks with family members struggling to do the best for their family member with PTSD.
He suggests three things that he's offered to wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, sisters and brothers of military contractors.
1. Talk to the person but do not tell them they have a problem that they're denying.
Instead, talk about what you like and miss and that the family wants the return to activities and things that were done together.
2. Go to get counseling for yourself. The person with PTSD may notice the change it has on you. Go along to regular medical routine appointments and listen but don't push or blame or confront.
3. Don't handle it alone. Call a specialist, call a doctor. Ask for help from any source. If you need help finding a source call the Garfinkel Schwartz offices. 1-800-393-2999.
