She started digging and dug up 2 slugs that looked so old. I'm not saying it was from the feud but more was found on that land later. A lot of people thinks it started over a pig. LOL I love that one. I will say one thing about the Hatfields. Cap even with only one eye they say he shot better than most with 2. But I have McCoy blood in me and proud of it. I talked to an elderly Hatfield lady in WVa in the late 1980s and her spin on the feud was a good deal different from the Legend. She knew many of the participants in the 1920s. She said it was well known that Johnse was at the New Year raid and it was he that beat Mrs. McCoy. She also said that Cottontop was not a sweet Downs syndrome victim, but was closer to Schizophrenic. He talked about hearing voices a lot, and her aunt told her most of the Hatfields were afraid of him, since you never knew when he would snap. She didn't doubt he could shoot Alifair but said it could have been any of the participants. She considered Johnse a dog who would not hesitate to seduce a young and innocent McCoy girl, and she felt really sorry for Roseanne.

There was this older cranky dude that lived down the street from me, I’d only ever see him on his porch, smokin marbs and lookin mean… After a few years I noticed a massive pile of stuff on the curb there, it turned out he died and it was a rental, the landlord threw most of it away and I scrounged it up… found some good stuff in there… one trash bag was totally full of paperwork. It turned out this guy was a Hatfield! Was also a Vietnam vet but it seems he was a lonely old crank, there were old photos and letter, lawsuits he was involved in, and a good bit of genealogy. Cool stuff, I couldn’t trash it, seemed disrespectful but I can’t find any of the people listed in the paperwork so it’s all just sitting in my garage. Honestly I’m wearing some of his clothes as I type… I’ve buried 4 relatives AND I got married to my wife while wearing a stylin pair of oxblood pennyloafers that I found in his stuff. As rarely as I dress up they may be able to bury me in those shoes! I really wish I’d have said hi to him but he didn’t live super close, but after rooting thru all his life I think we could have sat on his porch burning one and found a lot of common ground to cover. Such is life I suppose.

Same here! We Had a civil war battlefield and they literally turned it into a hospital. You come to see the battlefield, you are in the parking lot of a hospital? They did NOT disturb the old graveyard on the property luckily, just put a cheap fence around it and have let the weeds grow wild. You'd just think it was the edge of the property if you didn't know it was a graveyard. It really is sad. I would think it would be illegal to build on historical landmarks that way. But they sure took an entire Civil War battlefield from my state. Just a sign and a hospital now, very sad. Battle of red banks, Unicoi County Tennessee, in case you wondered. There are videos on here of the site before it was destroyed. I guess you can destroy the property, as long as you put up a pretty little sign. Just sad. @bonezcustoms on Instagram

A lot of people believe he is in the cemetery just next to the college not far from were you are standing, no one is real sure though. But that being said the odds of him being in a McCoy cemetery (dils cemetery is a McCoy cemetery) is highly unlikely. It is so sad they buried him in an unmarked grave.

All this started over loyalties in the Civil War. Anse Hatfield and Crazy Jim Vance killed my GG grandfather, Asa Harmon McCoy, over his desire to preserve the union and his service to the union army, a fact I am proud of and also the fact that Asa returned home wearing a union uniform coat. Probably the only coat he had at the time. Nah, this wasn't over no pig, this fight began when a Hatfield killed Asa, the pig was just another straw on the camels back.

Relax. I don't think he was saying it to pass judgement. At that time in history, that's how he would have been described. His father was not married to his mother, which carried a fair stigma in most sectors back then. Describing it any other way is really just a matter of semantics, anyway.
