Pukatja Band hail from the desert community of Pukatja, South Australia, also known as Ernabella, located 300km southeast of Alice Springs, Northern Territory. They are a vibrant, street-style reggae band that mixes in rock and jam band-style grooves. Made up of six members, they sing about the connection to community and what it feels like when you are far away from community. Their lyrics are in Pitjantjatjara and English.
The band is made up of lead singer and songwriter David Morris, who previously played in Thunder Boys, his brother Anslem (drums), Alfie Tjangala (keyboard), Cliffie Williams (lead guitar), Mervin Adamson on bass and Nelson Peters on acoustic guitar. Although recently formed in 2022, the members went to school together where they learned music and to play guitar.
Their influences include Saltwater Band, Letterstick Band, Rising Wind Band, Yothu Yindi, Bunna Lawrie’s Coloured Stone and the late South African reggae singer Lucky Dube.
They have performed live at Tjungu Uluru Festival, numerous community footy festivals and were selected for MusicNT’s prestigious Bush Bands Bash and Business Summit, which culminates in playing at Alice Spring’s historic Telegraph Station.
Following Bush Bands Bash, Pukatja Band plan to record an album at the local PY Studios.
