I love James. He just set the bar a bit too high for himself on the first records. If not for the poisoning and all...On the bright side, It's interesting to hear him work around the difficult parts. Some might say that it ruins the song because they're so used to the exact notes being there, I say it's creative and brings new life to it. I'm just happy to see them still performing together.

So even if the ad lib sounds like shit, it's still considered creative to you guys? Also, compared to the studio version, what he's trying to do here is much more tiring. He would've had more room to breathe if he had stuck to the studio melody.

I wonder if they have some sort of legal agreement with him. When he busted his pipes, they absolutely had to get out and nail the Awake tour. This was critical in order to keep up the momentum begun with I&W. Had they cancelled or postponed the tour, it all would have ground to a halt. Yet he had just suffered a severe injury, and to go on tour and perform a demanding rock concert every night was bound to do permanent damage. This in turn would affect his ability to earn an income for the rest of his life. He sacrificed not just his voice but his livelihood to keep this band going. So I can't help but think maybe they signed a contract with him stating that if he did the Awake tour, he would always be in the band. Major respect, this guy has cojones.

Aside from the food poisoning, JLB vocal's foundation was known to be not solid. There are many techniques that he didn't do properly that could cause injuries/vocal loss. Just search for vocal analysis of his in youtube, many professional vocal coaches have expressed the same concern.

The internet is so awesome. People complain about everything. You complain if a singer is miming at a live gig because you think you’re being ripped off. Then you shred a guy who’s out there doing it in his 60’s because his performance isn’t flawless. I will be the first to tell you that I have always had issues with LaBrie live. He’s slipped quite a bit the last few years, but I give him credit for at least being up there. It would have been very easy for them to do something about this and they chose not to.
@christians494

James is a victim of aging like everyone else. That doesn't force you to continue straining and suffocating yourself day after day, which he definitely is doing and has been doing for years. People with respect for themselves would've stopped long ago. He literally sounds like someone shouting and even studio records are overproduced to make his voice just somewhat bearable. It went downhill many years ago, even before MP left, but REALLY, went downhill after he left. Such a shame for an otherwise talented band, that i've loved for many years.

Just for a moment, let go of emotional attachment and hear what you are hearing objectively. Exactly! Unfortunately, dream theater is stuck because this bands fan base, collectively would never accept another singer, even one that could pull the live shows off with near perfection. And I’m not hating. I think James is a very talented singer but he is really having to throw his voice over the top and he’s obviously struggling and straining and can’t annunciate half the lyrics.
