This was our "Jig Thursday" selection from September 5, 2024. It’s often played in E Minor, though we put it up in A. We associate this jig with Matt Molloy-he recorded it with Willie Coleman’s Jig (both tunes up a step).
The title "Pull the Knife and Stick it Again" comes, apparently, from one of the many creepy fairy tales about fairy-folk. Matt says it refers to a black-handled knife used to remove a witch’s spell. The trick was to stab her and leave the knife in, and NOT ever remove it. Matt Molloy may have been the first to record ”Pull the Knife..” (in 1976), but the stories about fairies and magic and the tune itself is much older than that. It’s basically the jig version of Castle Kelly, which was first notated by Leitrim piper Stephen Grier in his 1883 music manuscript collection.

We started this 'series' on a diff social media platform. We wanted to share a few of our favorite tunes, and record them in a minute (so we could share the whole thing). It's such a small little project. But it's been fun to blast through a few of our very favorite jigs. We're putting the vids up on YT, for folks who want an easier way to search for titles.
