Unpolished could not be further from the truth. He is one of the greatest all round trumpet players in the world. If you think his sound is unpolished, just listen to him on a later album called "Ritzville". That recording was with the Woody Herman Band when he was an up and coming big star many years ago. Now he is a Trumpet Mega Star and also a wonderful humble human being. I had the pleasure of hearing him play Fire Dance and many other pieces of music featured on "Ritzville" in a little town called Kerikeri in Northern New Zealand. Then the privilege of meeting him afterwards. His sound is magnificent in the flesh!

It’s undeniable that this is impressive, but I find that playing fast notes don’t really mean anything if it isn’t a good melody. Sometimes it feels like he picks 3 random notes and then repeats them over a whole measure. Kind of boring but I can’t even circular breath so hats off to this guy

I'd bet it is due to "ghosting" or "print-through." This is a common audio artefact that occurs when the magnetic tape is stored for long periods. The signal from either the layer above or below on the roll "prints-through" to the adjacent layer. This can be heard as an audible "ghost" that can be heard before the true signal. Print-through or ghosting can also happen after the signal, but often it is hard to distinguish from natural or Studio reverb.

A message for all the "haters"...here's a Trumpet...let me hear YOU make a video in front of a big band playing this entire piece better and then do another 2-3 hrs of screaming lead trumpet...Woody said about Al "He makes Herbert L Clarke sound like a whimp!" True story-when Allen first joined Woody's band, he was almost fired b/c as great as Allen plays, he's not the powerhouse lead playing type...Nelson Hatt convinced Woody to keep him on and Woody never did regret that decision after Allen shared this piece w the band. Allen had written Firedance back in the early '70's when he was at Eastmen.

Just because people can’t do something doesn’t mean they have to like it. I can recognize how nearly impossible this piece is, like most of vizuttis standout pieces, and still not have them in my music rotation because I don’t particularly like them once the parlor trick aspect has been enjoyed.

@@chasefreak almost by default no one commenting on any artists work can do what they do. Basically No movie critic has ever made a movie, no music critic has ever made an album, etc… I don’t think anyone here is doubting Vizuttis skill and talent, they are unmatched, but his type of playing is not very appealing to lots of people, and his sound doesn’t have the brilliance or openness of other great soloists on the instrument. I don’t need to be able to play a double C to appreciate Maynard, and I don’t need to quadruple tongue Carnival of Venus to not want to listen to Alan play it

You are comparing apples to oranges. Miles Davis is an Icon in the world of Jazz Music. Look up what Allen has done . Just as he cannot do Miles , on Miles' best day he could never approach 1/10th of a degree of technical ability demonstrated here. Compare Miles to Chet Baker, Freddie Hubbard, Diz ( who had technique up the kazoo), Clifford Brown and Miles' teacher Clark Terry who was a teacher and friend to me. You wanna hear the best EVER technical Trumpet Player look up Maurice Andre, Timofey Dokshitzer and current people like Phillip Cobb and Tine Ting Helseth and educate yourself . You are either 12 or just sadly ignorant.
