Definitely underated. It's kind of like The Breakfast Club for the 90s, just came too late to fit in with the 80s and too soon for the mid 90s teen resergence. 'Heathers' should definitely be on the list to watch, a couple of years before but has a similar "neither here nor there" kind of attitude. Talk Hard my friends👊

I'd imagine that if you've grown up in the age of the internet and social media it's probably hard to imagine what life was like when there were no communication channels for young people to voice their feelings, concerns and pains. Pirate radio shows were what we had before the internet and social media, and because there were so very few of them their impact was substantial. This movie is a forgotten gem, Christian Slaters performance is stellar plus it has one of the best soundtracks of any teen film.

When you're 40+ years old you look back at your teenage years and only see the unlimited potential that lay in front of you, regardless of what was happening around you. What you forget is that when you're 17 years old, what's happening around you is *everything* in your life. It's not a job that you can quit if you don't like your boss, it's not a neighborhood you can move out of if you don't like your neighbors, it's not a social event you can skip out on if you just feel like chilling at home, it's not a few negative people that you can cut out of your life if you so wish. Older you looks back and sees all the choices you had yet to make, while no longer appreciating that _at the time_ you had absolutely *no* choices available to you. And, at least back in the late 1980s into the early 1990s, no voice to rage against all the inequities you saw so clearly in the world. So glad to see a younger person reacting to this forgotten gem of a movie. If you want another lesser-known but eerily prescient film from around the same time frame, check out "S.F.W." (1994).

You did enough. This came out when I was in HS, so for me, it was somewhat of an anthem movie for being Gen X. The movie put a lot of gritty things out there that needed to be seen and you have to admit, "Do crazy shit, just don't kill yourself" was some decent advice that got me through some shaky times in life. You're right, you could apply this to current generations because nothing really changes. Kids go through fucked up stuff every generation and they need to be seen and heard. I'm glad that it's more possible to get that expression out now, so they don't have to feel so isolated. Ty for reacting. Talk Hard.

This movie personified the idea that kids born in the 70s and 80s both wanted, and needed, to be heard. This same generation of kids went on to create KZitem; a platform to be seen and heard. I would argue this movie was a precursor, and prediction, of what would become social media. Edit: This movie is fire! Cult classic!

I’m a Gen X’er and graduated in 1992, I also lost my brother to suicide in 1995. I’ve watched this movie over & over again for the message and Christian Slater. I don’t think my brother ever sat and watched it, wish he had of though. He went from a honor roll student all through the last of elementary & junior high, he continued that 1st year of high school and then something just broke in him. He let the stress of trying to be perfect just change him. He pushed away friends, fought constantly with his girlfriend till she finally couldn’t take it anymore by senior year. He was failing all his classes and was going to night school and still was having issues. Because he was such a popular, lovable kid, we all ignored the warnings signs. He spent the weekend visiting us all and meeting my daughter for the first time after she’d been born and then shot himself with one of my Dad’s shotguns. I now will literally talk to strangers if I see any warning signs because I’m saying to them what I wish I could of said to him. I think that’s why I can’t make it through Billie Eilish’s song Everything I Wanted and also Lewis Capaldi’s Before You Go without ugly crying. It’s bad because I love both songs. Husband took me and my Daughter to see Billie in concert in March and when she performed that song, I lost it…full ugly cry. Thank you for reacting to this movie. It got a lot of shit when it came out because of the story and the subject matter.

I graduated in 1990, and this film speaks to me on so many levels. In so many ways I was like the "perfect girl" Paige, and in so many others I was totally like Mark/Hard Harry. Christian Slater was not my favorite actor, but after this, I became a bigger fan of his. For me, it's my favorite film that is a big dose of nostalgia for my teen years, but maybe in my top 50 overall favorite movies. In the final analysis, in so many ways this is a timeless film...kids are going through all kinds of crap. They always have, they always will...in many ways, kids have it worse today than I ever did in the 1980s and 90s. This was a film ahead of its time in many ways...the gay student being treated seriously, teen suicide, etc. Sam...always remember the theme of this film. We all have a voice. Maybe the movie is a little dated, but there is a totally standout soundtrack on this film. Pixies, Concrete Blonde, Peter Murphy, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden... Soundgarden before grunge was really on the scene. Also interesting that this film was talking about public expression and free speech via an illegal broadcast, all before the internet and podcasting and youtube were aspects of our world. Wonder what Hard Harry would do, if Twitter were around back in 1990. He'd probably post everything he said in this movie, inside of five minutes, but with zero impact. Oh well. I have 2 movie suggestions for you, but I'm deeply biased, because they're from my childhood. My Girl and The Sandlot. They don't make movies about kids for adults like they did in the late 80s, early 90s. These days, they're all CGI-fests and cartoons. My Girl was absolutely huge when it came out in 1991 and as a guy around the same age as the girl in the movie, I thought she was hot, especially in My Girl 2, 3 years later. The Sandlot is a rare baseball themed movie that doesn't end with "the big game." It's about the kids themselves and what it was like in the early 60s for kids in America. It's also wildly politically incorrect. I won't spoil either of them for you. They are that good. But what can I say about Pump Up the Volume? Christian Slater was a heartthrob type of actor at the time, and he's playing a rebellious teenager here, so it kind of worked for the time. It was right at the beginning of the Era of Extreme, the 90s. I thought we were headed for a lot more liberalization and freedom and in some ways we have, but in other ways, we've gone backwards as a society. Censorship is so stupid. Words can't hurt you unless you let them. Actions can. You can't use willpower to cure a bruise after someone punches you in the face. Being disabled, I learned that very quickly. It sucks when someone calls you a gimp, but it hurts a lot worse if they assault you because you're disabled.

It's also a surprisingly effective microcosm of how entrenched power functions and reacts to dissent, namely by attacking the symptom as the cause. If you're interested, there's a pre-Internet movie about hacking before "hacking" was even given that name. A lot of people think it's HACKERS but it's actually a movie called SNEAKERS. Yes, I know WARGAMES pre-dates both, but WARGAMES is more about the Cold War than the power of information. Either way, all of these movies are worth watching. But I'm gonna recommend SNEAKERS first as a companion piece to this film.

🎵 Everybody knows that the dice are loaded Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed Everybody knows the war is over Everybody knows the good guys lost Everybody knows the fight was fixed The poor stay poor, the rich get rich That's how it goes Everybody knows Everybody knows that the boat is leaking Everybody knows that the captain lied Everybody got this broken feeling Like their father or their dog just died Everybody talking to their pockets Everybody wants a box of chocolates And a long-stem rose Everybody knows 🎵 🎵 Everybody knows that you love me baby Everybody knows that you really do Everybody knows you've been discreet But there were so many people you just had to meet Without your clothes And everybody knows Everybody knows, everybody knows That's how it goes 🎵 🎵 And everybody knows that it's now or never Everybody knows that it's me or you And everybody knows that you live forever Ah, when you've done a line or two Everybody knows the deal is rotten Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton For your ribbons and bows And everybody knows And everybody knows that the Plague is coming Everybody knows that it's moving fast Everybody knows that the naked man and woman Are just a shining artifact of the past Everybody knows the scene is dead But there's gonna be a meter on your bed That will disclose What everybody knows 🎵 And everybody knows that you're in trouble Everybody knows what you've been through From the bloody cross on top of Calvary To the beach of Malibu Everybody knows it's coming apart Take one last look at this Sacred Heart Before it blows And everybody knows Everybody knows, everybody knows That's how it goes Everybody knows 🎵

Soooo happy to see you working Sam. I know these things are a chore to put out. Been a Christian Slater fan for years. He's always wanted to be Jack Nicholson. While he does make me smile I never got the tingling his sister Helen gives me. Billie Jean, Supergirl, Secret of my Success. Loved him in scads of movies. Kuffs, Name of the Rose, Broken Arrow, Robin hood prince of thieves. Just a few. Keep up the good work darlin'. B-bye

Sometimes my fingers are faster than my brain and stuff happens. I usually edit my sh*t before I send. This didn't work out this time. While I always thought Christian and Helen were siblings, they are not. So sorry.

I can't remember where I heard it, some movie or tv show, but someone said how grown-ups forget how it felt like to be a teenager.
