My understanding of the car crash, not only as a device to signify that life is random, is it's similarities to how Barry's sudden outbursts look to other people. Throughout the film we understand what is coming, with the rising score and unsteady camera, yet to everyone else it just appears to be out of the blue (like when he breaks the windows at the family dinner or smashes the bathroom)

I love this film! I love how by repairing this broken harmonium it brings music into his life with lifts him up, encourages him, etc. One of my favorite screens is where we see this stressed out Barry who just got into an altercation with the brothers, lean on the harmonium and instantly focuses in on what needs to be done! Such an amazing movie. I think if you're willing to look for the little things, you will love this but if you find that exhausting this film will frustrate you.

I love how this scene perfectly illustrates his loneliness. Sitting at a desk in the corner of a cold, empty room.... walking outside where it's growing dark and all you can hear is the wind howling.... then the eerie, random car crash and arrival of the harmonium followed by complete silence.

Sandler should have won an Oscar for this role. Nothing against Adrien Brody, he was great in The Pianist, But Sandler plays a role so subtly and so relatable.

The fact that some people are still asking what the significance of the crash is, is one of the reasons why PTA is such a great filmmaker. The car crash is totally random, its cause unexplained and the aftermath never addressed, much like life. If you think too much on the how and why you'll drive yourself crazy. It's the same reason why you shouldn't bother trying to unwrap all the mysteries of Lost Highway or Inland Empire: just sit back and embrace it.

Here’s what I think. The car crash symbolizes the fantasy element whereas the harmonium isn’t. The car crash could symbolize his suicidal planning or something painful he can think of. Hence why he reacts to the car crash like the way he did, even though it was quite distant from him. But that gets knocked out when the harmonium comes into play.

I really liked this movie, but have no idea what this was supposed to mean. Where did the wreck go after this? Why did someone pull up and drop off the piano thing?
@ElemuntDesign

+magetaaaaaa I think it's intentionally left open to interpretation but what this scene symbolizes is a sudden change in Barry's persona, the harmonium being the catalyst in which he grows to love along with Lena. This harmonium is shown visually throughout the film in it's framing and writing to be the link in their relationship.
@swish007

so the way i see it is the harmonium was that catalyst to start a change in barry's life.. but the random car wreck was kind of meant to show how barry is one of those kinds of people who has a lot of trouble dealing with the world and with random external stimuli.. which seems to happen a lot and cause him great stress. this is also illustrated by the clangy music in the soundtrack and the glares/flares in the camera work. he's possibly autistic and is easily startled and jangled by loud noises and such(because he's very much stuck in his own world). i thought the movie did a brilliant job in creating that feeling of being afraid of the world and constantly worrying about all the bad things that could happen to you.

It's not so complex, if you watch carefully, you'll notice that the movie is mostly set in two colors: blue and red. Blue for Barry and red for the girl. When the enviroment turns to warmer colors, means an approach, if you notice the color of both cars (the one that crushes, and the one that leaves the piano) they're both red. And they apear dramaticaly, meaning that Emily comes to his life the same way. If you watch the movie from this point of view, you'll have an interesting perspective about the whole thing. And you will notice that not everything makes rational sense, bur rather esthetic (for example the phone call in Hawaii, or the fight scene). The secret is always not to overthink things (usually inteligent people does that), but rather to enjoy it esthetic and emotional.
