This could definitely be brought back - I loved it back in 1981 and it's still hilarious now - Lennie Bennett steered the Punchlines ship superbly I can't believe it's 40 years ago now later this year since it was made and broadcast. Many thanks Jeff Stevenson for sharing these from your personal archive. 👍

I barely remember this show. I was only 5 in 1981. But this show always seemed american to me, even though it was english made. I got to meet Matthew Kelly in 2004, he's a very tall man.

It was actually created in America, it was a reboot of Bob Stewart’s “Eye Guess.” In fact they did a pilot with Bill Cullen which unfortunately didn’t sell.

Joanne Gray Yes, well my Dad was quite strict & I never went out much & I was at home most of the time & the TV always used to be on & I used to watch all them programmes in my childhood that's how I remember them being that the television always used to be on. I remember The Krypton Factor (Gordon Burns) I remember This is your Life (Eamonn Andrews), Highway (Sir Harry Secombe) Come on Down the Price is Right (Lesley Crowther). I could tell you much more but it would be a long list.

That's kinda the exact point, in 1981 they were priceless, you're forgetting in 1981 there was no Spotify, there was no KZitem, and if you wanted a mix of songs and not have to buy individual albums to get them then taping music off the radio with a blank cassette was the key to all the music you could ever want without the expense. And customised personalised playlists more the point. And with two tape decks you could edit them however you wanted so yes in 1981 that ghetto blaster with double tape deck and 20 free cassette tapes was any music lovers dream

@@user-et6pj4db9s Last model of that stereo radio cassette player (a Panasonic RX-5500) that was on eBay went for £135. Broken. Those blank tapes (TDK Ds) aren't cheap now either. Sealed Ds of that era (1979-81) go for £8 - £10 each. Neil would be now be quids in if he'd kept all that in the box.

Seems to be one of those popular at the time smutty innuendo shows like blankety blanks, Roy Kinnear made it funnier but what the hell would they do if everyone kept on getting the wrong answer, theoretically this game could go on forever...

Punchlines LWT 1981 3 0610am 29.6.23 looks like they were all brian...but jeff. lenny bennet? liked him. he was pretty funny. he used to star as a comedic double act with some italian fella. celebrity squares... where's that in this long list of nostalgia...? p.s roy kinnear is popping up a bit during the past few days for some reason: boys in blue film, hammer horror movie... punchlines...

Mystery to me. The viewing figures were fine considering there were only 4 channels at the time. Could be that LWT decided it had had its day but also possibly felt it could not compete with Blankety Blank with Les Dawson presenting ( assuming they were in the same time slot).

Dear Cathy and Claire, I was aged 8 then, I am 46 now and I am ashamed to say that I am still puzzling over Bryan at No.2’s gender. Please help! Oh btw, I am sure I spotted Bryan about 2 years later on a short lived Gong Show type talent show on ITV. They were dressed in a nun’s habit and only got to say one line before the gong went. 🥳
