Dholavira, also known as Kotada Timba locally, is an archaeological site situated at Khadirbet in the Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District, within the state of Gujarat in western India. The site derives its name from the modern-day village located 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) south of it. Positioned 165 km (103 mi) from Radhanpur, the village is susceptible to earthquakes, with a particularly severe one recorded around 2600 BC.
The discovery of Dholavira can be credited to Shambhudan Gadhvi, a resident of the Dholavira village, who brought the site to the government's attention in the early 1960s. Officially discovered in 1967-68 by J. P. Joshi of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Dholavira is the fifth largest among the eight major Harappan sites. Ongoing excavation efforts by the ASI since 1990 have contributed significantly to understanding the nuances of the Indus Valley Civilization. Recognizing its cultural importance, Dholavira was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Dholavira: a Harappan City" on 27 July 2021.
