I think it is also really important to identify key areas where your dog will 'go' - particularly if you have a male dog - and choose plants in that location that are salt-tolerant (and thereby urine tolerant). This is IMHO critical to achieve a puppy proof - and ultimately dog proof - garden

I walk my neighbor's yellow Lab. He ate stones and gravel also, once eating so many he had to go to "water only" for a couple of days until he passed them. That's when we started muzzling him when on walks . The muzzle prevents him from gobbling up stones and small pieces of litter, but he can still drink and receive treats. He loves birdseed also, but it seems to pass through him undigested. Good luck training your sweet Ozzie.

What a cutie! So sorry to hear about Lottie, She was always fun to watch in your garden. We rescued a Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix who patrols the boundary of our yard each time he goes out. That seems to be a trait of the Pyrenees. Luckily, mine is planted away from the fence so he has a perfect path ( and tramples the weeds down). He is a digger, so still have to keep an eye on him. First time I gardened with him, he followed behind me and dug up everything I had planted, lol.

Good advice. This spring we had nine dachshund puppies in our garden and they dug up all newly planted perennials. It was more a case of puppies being a danger to gardens rather than the other way round! I do worry about yew berries though as we have a dog who is rather partial to them, so we stick a temporary fence around the yew trees.

I'm so sorry Lottie passed away; love her elegant stroll out of the borders you show here. I know lilies are extremely toxic; I've heard of several cases where cats got into the pollen r chewed the plant and died of kidney failure. The only problem we had with our border collie Savannah was her determination to herd the lawn mower! However, one time I prepared a pail of fertilizer dissolved in water, and - turned around to see Savannah taking a good long drink of it! No ill effects thank G.od. Adorable puppy 💖💕🇨🇦

We got two Covid puppies. They are both mini Aussies--very energetic. I've found that the wood mulch around my raised vegetable beds was getting stuck between the pads of their feet, sometimes causing small cuts. So I've replaced it with straw, which is easy on their feet. It's soft, doesn't heat up much in the sun, and mats nicely to surpress weeds.

Ozzie is as adorable as Lottie was graceful. The biggest concern I have with my dog in the garden is his attraction to eating fertilizer. I fertilize twice a year. I’ve learned to cover the top of the fertilizer with compost and water it in, then closely supervise my dog for the next several days so he doesn’t find a way to eat it…Thankfully he doesn’t eat plants. 🐶

I'm sorry for Lotty, Alexandra, but I'm sure that the lovely puppy will bring you a lot of joy too. ❤ We never had serious problems with dogs in our garden, all survived without adjusting the garden (3 dogs, one by one, 25 years of experience). 😊 In my opinion, the most dangerous thing is a pond or pool - one of our dogs fell into a pond with water lilies (when she was a puppy), but we noticed it in time and pulled her out. Lesson learnt, she didn't go too close any more. No flower beds' damage, it"s the question of training - any of our dogs didn't run through the beds. And no poisoning - combination of intuition and training. Fingers crossed with raising your new family member!😊

My husky has just turned one and did everything your new pup did. He no longer eats stones and like you said, I think dogs instinctively know whata poisonous and whats not. Hes left majority of the plants alone other then the edible garden and my berries. I would say what we're still training him is which plant it's okay to pee on... having to keep telling him he's only allowed to pee on the buddliea as that plant is such a vigorous grower and we don't care is his pee burns the lower part of the plant. He still keeps trying to pee on smaller trees thats not yet established and burning them turning their braches dead. I forgot to say he loves eating roses? But thankfully roses are edible.

What a sweet puppy ❤. My dog (a Dobermann) is 8 now but as a pup he denatured the lawn at the house we rented ar the time. He dug holes in the dust and frolicked in them when it rained. This is why we didn't bother with lawn when we built our current home..lol. The only things I worry about with him in the garden is : being stolen, or someone leaving a gate open, or him poking himself on sharp branches . Having a puppy resurrects the danger radar that we employed with our kids as babies and toddlers. Enjoy your new pup. ❤

So sorry about Lottie, so very sad. Adorable puppy! My pup is a 90 pound Catahoula Bulldog, he chased a squirrel right into a fence and knocked a section right over! So checking fencing can hold your dog would be on my list. I don’t worry about poisonous plants but I do watch. I do have chickens and he did love chicken feed and would become bloated, we had to change up how we fed the girls. He is almost three and will still eat chicken feed if he gets to it. He is trained to not walk on my island garden but does check for squirrel invaders along the perimeter. I have a small path behind the back border for me to check the plants back there, it’s worked out nice because that’s what he uses. In fact, I think it’s hilarious when the fox, raccoons and bunnies use the paths too. Great video, thank you and enjoy that puppy!

Congratulations on your new puppy. He is gorgeous! We added a golden doodle last year to our family and she has been the best addition. I have a very landscaped yard and am type A so that sets the stage. Training is spot on and keeping an eye on the puppy. Think of them as a human 6mth old. You would not let you baby crawl around freely without supervision. Lila, our dog, does not get into borders, I have nicotiana, alliums, and lots of other toxic plants. For nicotiana I tuck in back where she can’t get to it. My one piece of advice is if you want a perfect lawn have a plan as to wear the dog can urinate. We let her go on our main lawn and regret it. We had large yellow dead spots surrounded by tall lush nitrogen happy grass. It will take a couple of years of seeding to repair the dead spots unless we plan to cut out that section and bring in sod. We are in zone 5 and have mostly Kentucky blue grass so that problem may vary depending on your turf. You can water the turf after they go which works but who wants to do that every time. We now have a designated spot. Honestly you can have a lovely garden and a dog. One last point beware of standing water in the garden and on walks. We had a friend whose dog drank puddles and got giardia. No fun for dog or owner.

Good morning Alexander, so sad to hear about Lottie, she always looked so sophisticated walking around the flower beds, never saw her muddy! She was like a moveable ornament in the garden. Ozzie is looking lovely, a beautiful rich brown, he loves his chew, those little teeth just need that something to chew on. Having a puppy is like having your baby starting to crawl. Everything has to be child proof and safe. You will have to make a safe area for when nobody is at home, if he gets bored, that is when big trouble happens. He looks very friendly and I am sure he will be easy to train. It will be a bit time consuming in the beginning but as he learns things will become better. Do not worry too much, just enjoy him as you are doing on camera. I just kept the dogs with me in the house as they were growing up, and would take them outside for a toilet and to just walk about. The love we develop for them helps us cope with their demands. Enjoy, kind regards, Elize

My Sadie is now 10 months old. I think it’s like a baby, you certainly need to be aware and watch them, but teaching them to live within your life is the better than trying to remove everything. As you said, you couldn’t likely anyway. One trick that I did as I built my garden from scratch is left about a 1 ft track around the entire fence line before the plants begin. They make that border check continuously but stay in their lane. Of course my dogs are small though. Enjoy the puppy time and congratulations! It’s a lot of work to start but so much fun. Sadies favorite thing now is to watch for butterfly shadows and chase them. She hasn’t quite figured out that they aren’t the actual thing. Such a sweet time 🐶♥️

I have two rescue spanish greyhounds (related to saluki, btw), adopted when already fully grown and they never made any mischief in the garden. They're hunting dogs, so can barely be trained (we never even tried) but they're so well behaved and polite that youd think they were. Just once on a very hot day one of them started furiously digging a hole to find some cooler ground to lay on, and the hole she dug was close to a hydrangea😳. I was kind of schocked but the plant was ok. At least in my personal experience, I think (adult) dogs have a natural instict when it comes to poisonus plants, and they avoid them.

He is a handsome fellow! I have a 2 year old Labrador and she was an escape artist so we had to put a post and wire stock fence around the existing boundary. I was amazed how she would find the smallest gap or find an ingenious way of clambering over the wall. They are all different. When she was a young puppy I used a large octagonal pen, bought for £50, to contain her on the lawn for a bit so she couldn’t get up to mischief. Also we had to fence off a beck that run through the garden and out through a culvert. She has cost us a small fortune but she is absolutely worth it.

Our Great Pyrenees pups are 6 mths. old now, and I'd say they've wreaked more havoc To the garden than the garden has to them, even though we have most of the poisonous plants you mentioned. It's true that they chew on EVERYTHING from broken pots. plastic pots, string and branches of all sorts, even bits of pruned roses! One of them tore open 3 bags of mulch to make himself a hill to play on, before I even noticed. However, I have found that if they are provided with lots of chewy bones, rawhide sticks, soup bones, etc. they have less of a tendency to go after everything else in sight. Although puppyhood is a joy to behold, I will be happy when they reach adulthood and ease up a bit on making mischief. I think dogs are a lot more resilient than we realize.

I cut a circle of chicken wire and crammed it in the tub at the water line. Another issue with dogs in the garden is their digging. some recommend making a digging pit out of sand with treats buried in it so they dig there. Sorry to hear you lost Lottie, such a pretty dog.

Great video, and I think as you say with taking precautions removing hazards and training a lot of problems can be solved. I have a black lab and a Golden Retriever who when puppies did crash through borders chasing each other. If you are going to have puppies and dogs you ajve to expect a little bit damage will be inevitable. One thought is to make sure house plants are out of puppies reach. Many popular house plants are toxic too, so it's common sense to make sure they are out of harm's way.

What a beautiful pup! I hope you find a solution for the bird feeders. I feel the biggest challenge is using a barrier or fence around the feeders that's easily removable so you can sweep or mow every week. A DIY challenge for sure 😅 chicken wire is rather fiddly and difficult to work with but you could attach a strip of it to any decorative fencing that's high enough and it makes a pretty good barrier.

I'm sorry to hear about Lottie, she was beautiful. Your new puppy is very sweet, but looks a bit of a terror. I spent the last year pulling things out of my Cocker Spaniel's mouth and I think in the end it's a losing battle, because they will always find something, usually a thing you really wanted to protect. At a year old he is still rooting out precious cuttings when I'm not looking, but the main hazard has been bulbs during the Spring. Don't panic, although "toxic to dogs" many things just give a tummy ache or some diarrhoea. Hopefully they learn by light misfortune but as you say, they appear to have a good instinct, or we'd have no wild animals out there. How their teeth cope however, is another matter!

One of the first things we taught Flora was “out of the bed”, which she is pretty good at, however, digging is still a problem. We have a separate area for potty breaks and she uses that almost exclusively, especially for pooping. She does enjoy munching on ornamental grasses (especially hakanakloa) and she loves to “dethatch” the lawn! So sorry to hear about your beautiful Lottie. She looked so elegant tip-toeing through the borders. Your recommendation about training the puppy to stay out of certain areas, and the mention below of a designated 'potty spot' sound more practical than ripping out lots of plants. At our old home (with a very small garden) the prior owners had two large Golden Retrievers who spent a lot of time on the deck. There was also a three by six foot area by the back gate (next to the trash bins) that was basically a planter bed filled with decomposed granite, like a large doggie litter box. We have indoor cats, but several from the neighborhood leave traces behind. Currently dealing with a family of skunks, a possum, and two raccoons who have been eating my roses and berry vines. Enjoy your new baby Ozzie!

Your puppy is lovely, and I know how worried we are about our puppies. My lovely Tibetain Terrier is thankfully now 18 months old, but I have to say she was never attracted to any poisonous plants in the garden. She loved the Kale and would sit chomping on the stalks while I did some winter gardening. I do think they have an instinct when it comes to plants, and I suppose as far as chocolate goes, maybe it the sugar they're attracted to ???? Enjoy your lovely puppy and thank you for sharing. 🙋♀️

Congratulations on the arrival of Ozzie and sorry to hear about Lottie, she was a lovely dog. If you come across any tips to save the lawn from wearing out from dog zoomies I'd love to know them! I saw a comment below about saving plants from cocked legs - I've ended up putting little bamboo cane wigwams over newly planted shrubs as my spaniel thought they were a great target (and also crashed into them) so I lost a few!

So sorry to hear about Lottie. It looks like Ozzie is going to keep you both very busy indeed, but he is adorable so I expect you will forgive him a few bashed up plants! I would like to think most dogs wouldn't eat enough of the poisonous things to cause harm, they probably taste horrible anyway. Sounds like you are doing everything possible so fingers crossed.

My condolences regarding your special Lottie. The loss of a devoted friend is heartbreaking. You asked about things in the garden to be aware of around puppies. We had two French Bulldogs (down to one now). Here are a few things we encountered. We had trouble with bees. Both of them (in their own time) ate a flying bee. That can be very dangerous to be stung in the mouth (especially if the dog is like a Frenchie or Pug) due to their already smashed-in face and swelling. A trip to the Vet countered that. One sting seemed to do the trick with lots of reinforcement from us to stay away from the bees. Fertilizer can also be a problem. They love the stuff but it is not good for them. I fertilize in phases and block off that part of the garden until it is fully absorbed. It takes longer but it’s worth it. Last tip has to do with mulch. Both of my girls loved to eat it. Make certain you buy mulch that has not been dyed with chemicals. You have no idea what chemicals they used. We searched and found mulch dyed with a vegetable dye. Not as cheap as the stuff from the big box stores, but worth it for a healthy dog. Good luck with your new sweet little Ozzie!

So sorry for your loss of beautiful Lottie. Best wishez with the adorable new little one! Our labradoodle also bounces around the border beds narrowly missing plants. She's 65lbs and gets the zoomies but causes minimal damage!

I am preparing to get a pup in the Fall and have been doing what I can in the garden to make it safer, although if the dog will be out there, I will be with him. I just got what they call Dog Defence - short metal fence pieces that you hammer into the ground along any gaps at the bottom of your fence to prevent them from digging out. I don't care really if he runs into the flower beds, most of the plants are established and are used to being torn up by the crazy squirrels trying to find a cool place to lie down in the excessive heat. I took up the lawn years ago and replaced it with a soft native un-dyed mulch, and the trees have grown tall enough to provide good shade for us - literally 10 degrees cooler than the norm. And I installed a Doggie Dooley, which is basically a miniature septic system which you fill with water and an enzyme powder and put the "dooleys" inside so they decompose and keep the yard clear. Best of luck with that little one!

Really sorry to hear about sweet Lottie ~ so often saw her garden-exploring in the background of your videos. Congratulations on your new puppy, gorgeous Ozzie. He is such a cutie! This is such useful advice about toxic plants. As you say, I do think dogs do have a sense of what is potentially poisonous. At puppy stage it might be useful to have one of those toys in which treats can be inserted, and the puppy has to work to extract the treat. It might distract Ozzie from his interest in gravel when he's out in the garden.

I've had two labradors and one time when I let my puppy (8wks) out to run a little some boys started chasing him. Now I had no fence or anything but he ran straight for a drainage ditch the kind with a cement cover and an opening on the side which drops down into a cement pipe YiKES!. The boys caught him by the tail and kept him from dropping into the pipe. I ran over and pulled him to safety but after that I trained him to stay away from that drainage ditch. I never worried about garden plants, lots of training and doggie pursuits like retrieving with a dummy, ball or frizbee gives them the exercize and makes them happy dog. The other thing to worry about is running in front of a car if you are near a road. I was thinking about another pup but I have deer here, so not sure how I want to handle that yet.

So sorry to hear about your Lottie. Your new puppy is so adorable! I would think some distraction with toys and the occasional long-lasting chew treat would help keep a puppy away from some of the plants, for a while anyway! Best of luck with Ozzie!

I sooo appreciate this video and would love more people commenting on what plants they have in their gardens. Like you I have always thought they are more instinctual when it comes to plants then many give them credit for. Do you have wisteria in your garden?? I guess I’m more concerned about the seed pods then the actual plant.
@TheMiddlesizedGarden
Жыл бұрын
I have wisteria but it's right at the back of a border. I'm slightly encouraged by the fact that he doesn't seem to eat the poisonous plants, but how people ever keep puppies alive in any ordinary garden I can't imagine. I am constantly trying to take things out of his mouth.

Its mostly a case of supervising your puppy until he or she grows up in a year or so. You don't usually see dogs chewing on sticks and twigs instead of their toys once they have grown up. Small puppies are teething just like human babies and chew on everything they can pick up with their mouths. Have lots of chew toys outside, monitor their play while they are outside, playing fetch with them and their chew toys, will redirect all of their chewing attention to the toys and not to self-made "toys" like fallen leaves and sticks. Keeping the lawn raked also gives them less natural things to chew on. I've always worried more about the dog getting into toxic human food on the kitchen counter when I wasn't in the room (like chocolate and onions) than I was about outdoor things. Pantry cupboards had childproof latches on them so he couldn't muzzle the door open with a snout and explore; countertops were always kept cleared of food or dirty dishes. For my adult dog, chewing on a splintery stick where he could get a large wood splinter pierced in his mouth or stuck between his teeth was the only thing I seriously watched out for. Keeping rawhide bone chews for him solved that problem.

BTW There was an investigation by the FDA awhile back to evaluate whether there might be a link between grain-free dog foods and taurine deficiency (and potential impacts on the heart - DCM)... The science is just not there - but given this uncertainty, and advice from our vet, we chose to switch to different kind of kibble...
