All three sound great, video was very well done. I’m impressed that the stock pickups didn’t appear to give up anything in regards to the other two. Thanks for sharing.

Stock pickups sounded best to my ears. Fat 50s gives a little more output/punch. 59s had some good qualities, but neither seemed better than the stock pickups to me.

I don’t know if I ended up with an odd duck or not, but I bought a MIM Player Strat and the stock A5 pickups in that guitar are crazy good. I like the ‘59’s in this video.

The fat 50's warmth really shows against the other too. Its appreciated in some clips and not as much in others. One clip that stood out for me is the neck overdriven where I thought fat 50s just slayed it.
@KozumaHeiji

The Fat50 is still on the guitar, so agreed. But all three sets really sound great in their own right. I have this feeling that the PV59 would benefit from bent steel saddles instead of the stock block saddles my Strat has - I think the block saddles roll off the high end a bit, which benefit the Fat50s more in this case.
@coldacre

warmth = louder, more compressed with less high end. 6.5k resistance compared to the '59's 5.8k.

Thank you for this video - well done. Helped me re-decide why the 59's are nice but not my favorite (had sold a strat with these on-bd). For me 69's and 57/62 cover most all bases. Also, thanks for the inclusion of the Am Std AINiCO - I have these on an Am Std Strat for gigs and they cut thru nicely with tone cntrl on 7. We can see by the comments posted that personal taste abounds! And fingers have a very lot to do with sound. I read an interview with Mr. Clapton's guitar tech. When asked has Eric ever had a 'bad night'. He said 'yes- but he still sounds like Eric Clapton'.
@KozumaHeiji

I had the 57/62s on a MIM Standard partscaster I sold and I really like them too. I think the 59s would have benefitted from vintage saddles. I've just replaced the whole bridge assembly for a newer one with them and the change in sound is noticeable. I still have the Fat50 set installed - the hum cancelling in pos 2 and 4 ended up being a deciding factor too

Thanks! Glad you like it. Yes, it was used on the American Vintage 59, and now currently on the American Original 50s Strat. I do think these pickups might sound better with bent steel saddles - mine has the block ones from the 90s - I might experiment with that later. I think it might bring more top end sparkle

@@KozumaHeiji thanks, yes you’re right the vent steel seems to have a bit more chime... the original 50s guitars now have those saddles I played one of the vintage 59 starts and the pickups sounded really great! Been looking for one and found an original 50s one haven’t played it and was wondering how close that would sound. I know those have the 9.5 neck compared to the 7.25 of the original and I believe the neck has a bit more girth on the original 50s Have you played those... any thoughts?
@KozumaHeiji

@@SamJosephMedia no hands-on experience with either, sorry. But on paper they are close enough in specs so I wouldn't expect a huge difference in sound - more feel and playability. Differences between individual guitars considered, of course. Plus, maple vs rosewood boards

Great choice in songs. I am inspired to learn some of them after watching this. As far as the pickups I think they all sound great. I have the 59s in a strat right now and they are great vintage low output pickups. I had the Fat 50s in a couple of guitars and they are, as the name suggests a little fatter. If you want a really authentic vintage strat sound go with the 59s. Go with fat 50s if you want a bit more warmth/dark sound. The regular Am standards are good too, but maybe a little bland?

Agreed. Best cost benefit is def the Am Std set. They are usually pretty cheap cause most people don't care about them. F50s were stock on hundereds of Am Stds from 2012 to 2016 or so, so there should be quite a few good deals on used sets though.

The Am. Std. is the clear winner, IMO. They're more lively, and have more of that classic vintage Strat sparkle, spank, chime, bell like tone, whatever you choose to call it. It's just that perfect tonal balance that is magic, and only a select few pickups have, IMO. They just sound more like a Strat should to me, and the other two are kind of flat and bland in comparison.

Yeah, the Fat 50 is the set still in the guitar, so I understand your feelings. But it depends heavily on the guitar - imo it just happened that the Fat50s just worked well with this particular Strat. As I said in another comment, I think the PV59s would greatly benefit from bent steel saddles, as one of its key features is the top end chime and the block saddles do seem to roll out the highs a bit
