Glad you got the deeper meaning of that last verse section... As someone who has grown up around physical abusive environment, and has PTSD symptoms as a result of it, I felt a very strong resonance with Maynard's lyrics. Not many people I know feel the intensity in the lyrics, or understand it as someone like me, who has gone through abuse, and understand how it changes you. I've also witnessed first hand of people spouting shit, whilst not understanding the implications of what they're saying.

The best way I can explain to you how Maynard associates each of his bands is tool is intellectual/spiritual, a perfect circle is more feminine/emotional and puscifer is more artsy. God is a personification not a person and the different archetypes of this personification are broken down between the pysche. If God is the macrocosm of this then humans are the microcosm psychologically speaking. Many over the years have said lucifer and God are the same just different natures of the same entity and there is a duality of that within the music Maynard creates. Puscifer from what I can remember is lucifer with a P = (pussy) it's hinted in the album called V is for vagina. Where lucifer is the female or more feminine side of God's personality. I'm probably overcomplicating this in some ways and then oversimplifying these ideas in others. Anyways check out telling ghosts or man overboard from puscifer those are couple of my favorites. Cheers~

I think this song it talking to the younger generations or the haters or disrespectful youth/ people. I think he's doing his best at using modern terms that appeal to the younger generations. Trolls , haters, 86s. 86s is a trem also used like kick that, or scratch that or disregard kinda. But I think it's just like another ultimate dis song which he is good at and still it's beautifully written and he could rip you apart and it still would sound amazing. Even if he was very literal it sounds so good and you'd be sitting there like what wait wtf just happened. He's just that good and he doesn't even have to be angry for you to get the point. Tactful lol. It's just a song every one could apply to their every day lives. We've all been around that one person who thinks they're always right spewing bullshit talking like they know more than they actually do (racket from their lip a flapping) you know the listening to react kind of people wanting to prove everyone wrong or just trash talking instead of the listening to other's to actually try understand from another person's perspective. Those kinds of people we would all love to tell off or smack in the fucking mouth!!! Cause he's saying that's pretty much the Remody to solve the problem lol. That's my take on it anyways
@Jess-gf4os

But Pusifer has several versions of music there's definitely not one set kinda direction like Tool on the other hand. So they're kinda all over the place while still sounding amazing. Here's how it goes Tool is Maynard's more serious side to himself. A Perfect Circle is actually Billy Howerdel's band (from Smashing Pumpkins) that he started he was looking for a female vocalist initially but some how Maynard ended up filling that spot instead. Maynard will be the first to say its Billy's Band. So I feel that is his more feminine side to himself he shows and Pusifer is his fun band the one that has no limits. It's his band his way the one he is free to be himself no pressure. He said Pusifer is more of a verity show fill he likes to also not take life too seriously just have fun so Pusifer is more of an outlet than all of them because he likes to be an actor and comedian as well at these concerts he likes them to be in a theater setting because he says it more intimate atmosphere. There you have it the many sides to Maynard lol read his book also you will learn a lot about him and somethings people have gotten wrong about him.

I'd take the most literal interpretation of the lyrics: if you don't behave at least somewhat closely to some sort of established norm, don't be surprised if you get talked down to or even smacked in the mouth. It's not the first time Maynard has openly vented frustration at people being asses in lyrics; take Aenema. He's usually subtler than that, granted. Keep in mind he's very particular about his private life, shooting paintball guns at paparazzi and whatnot. Our home, our rules.

Okay since I see that nobody has set you straight in the comments you are totally off about the meaning of this song. Maynard hates it when people come to a Puscifer show and ask him tool questions or bother him about tool when they come to buy his wine. It is talking about if you can't be cool and just enjoy the vibe you will be kicked out or 86.... and some of the not so fun tool fans don't even realize that they are that bad so yes we're talking down to you we assumed you didn't notice

I'm glad you enjoyed parts of this. I can't make up your initial reaction for you, but was sad to see your head canon for the song getting in the way. Getting too stuck on domestic abuse when that's not really the message of the tune. But you're absolutely right domestic violence is most often reported in schools, and without classes many many cases will go unreported, as tensions grow even higher in at risk homes.

Good reaction. Though I also like the message you gave, I think you missed the target a bit. I don't think the song is about people talking about stuff they don't know about (though totally agree with that message, including on your specific example which unfortunately as a child I observed that situation in my home)... I think it's basically just calling out trolls. Our house our rules, basically if you can't be decent get out. Trolls are often people who talk trash to people because they've never faced the consequences, like getting smacked in the mouth. Basically people of privilege who can act without facing the consequences for their actions. They talk without respect because they haven't had to pay the price for speaking disrespectfully. So I don't think it saying don't talk about things you haven't experienced, just don't be a dick and be respectful to people or you get smacked in the mouth. I have also been smacked in the mouth before and it does indeed teach you to be far more aware of others. I think a lot of trolls could use that remedy. Also metaphorically I think it applies to things just beyond trolls speaking disrespectfully. I think it can apply to people who are in general dismissive to others often rising from a metaphorical lack of being smacked in the mouth. Like someone who has had financial privilege their whole life dismissing the strife of being poor. Life hasn't financially knocked them out so they are disrespectful. You don't necessarily have to go through those bad things to be respectful though, hence the target of the song is the trolls not the ignorant.

I think the term "86's" or "getting 86'd" is a military reference to article 86. 86 became a military term for being fired or discharged (dishonorable for AWOL soldiers). So basically trolls get removed or fired, they're not welcome. I could be wrong, but Maynard served in the army I think, so it would make sense. When I heard this song I thought it was about my generation. Basically a lot of entitled kids who were sheltered from everything. Bullying/hazing weren't such a thing, so a lot of us never learned to stop and think before speaking out. Loads of loud and idiotic opinions without any kind of filter, because we weren't raised afraid we'd get hit. I think it might be saying "yes, we're condescendingly saying your words are weak and meaningless, we just thought you were so busy spewing ignorance that you weren't paying attention". I could be way off base, but that was my interpretation.
