My pain your gain!
Watch me scramble to get on foil as the clock runs down... we had taken the drone out to 3km's offshore. This was the furthest we have been and we were unsure how much time we had to film. I was very aware of this as I scrambled to get up and going... I should have taken the time I needed and worked towards doing my best.
There's something to be learned from that. It is a lesson I've been through before and perhaps I can write it down here... I don't always find the words or thoughts I need to express what I have learned or been through, to have gotten to this point.
Basically, in moments of high stress where it can be make or break the best thing to do is the basics... easier said than done. That means blocking out all thoughts... not just negative ones. It means getting to your feet by doing what works, not by doing your best or needing to make it happen but by simply doing what works. It means not using your mind to project to the future, or to know you have what it takes, but simply doing the task... not with added effort or trying more than usual or making your best attempt or anything beyond simply doing it. If you have the tools and the energy and the will ( and that's not the will to try hard or your best) but the will to do it.
I see a lot of people failing hard, failing with their best efforts and even emptying their tank showing how hard they are trying… But that's not it. Its the art of doing the task, none of the fancy try hard stuff, trying to cover the bases of all the excuses. What is often needed is a simple act, being brave enough to do what is required in the most basic of ways.
It's easy to say you've done your best by emptying your tank or even hurting yourself, injuring yourself to show how hard you tried. You didn't need to try hard in the first place but to simply do the task. It is the easiest and the hardest thing all at once. Its the going into the unkown without being exhausted, or with some kind of excuse! its the doing of the thing when you are at your best not at your worst so that there is no place to hide. because then you didn't fail because you weren't ready or you were tired or you could do it later... or you want to do it your way or whatever rationalization you’ll use.
Don’t be afraid of success.
