I bought a 1978 440c cable skidder a year ago. It has been a project as i had previously little experience working on equipment. All was goin well with the machine and 3325 winch. Last sunday winch would wind in and freespool but would not hold. Replaced a cut oring on a fitting in the control valve, still no hold. Pulled the dry cover tightened the brake band adjustment, better but still not right. Back to the control valve im thinkin ill pull it in the mornin and rebuild it, i hear the exchange for a rebuilt is costly. Thanks for making your videos and best luck to you and the old iron horse.

The springs ong the brake band are the only thing that holds the drum on these winches. The vavle just spolls in and releases it. And when they do bypas they just serculate. Im guessing the band has goten oil on it or wearing out. Im no expert by any means but just my guess on your situation. I have another video tearing the winch apart if you havent seen it.

Nice. Be very careful pulling logs with that winch, if they happen to hit a route or a stump brake clutch will be toast in that winch It will pull 20,000 pounds but it will not drag very much weight especially if it hits a snag I have rebuilt probably a dozen of them in the last 10 years from people that buy these clean up around the place and they try to drag something and it hits a tree or a stump. And as you notice when you did yours the labor that's involved, just imagine if you had to pay someone to do it.

A proper wedge clamp would be better, also you'd be well off to build some sort of stop to protect your self in case that cable snaps.

You mean a ferrule?

No take a look at how they fasten the cables on a hook on a crane. it's a wedge that tightens with the more force that is applied. I will say the final way you attached the cable to the drum was pretty sharp.@@hoopiemade
