I remember racing the hobie 14 my parents bought when I was about 13 and always wanted to make my own movie using the TJ Brass music as background ... I'm now 58

LOL, now the first tack in the video showed you guys dumping on your butts, and all the other tacks were edited and did not show you guys crossing.... or even a jibe. Truly the dumping which caused the boat to stomp on the brakes was very entertaining and made the video A+. When you are a professional sailor, it seems that when you pull of a move that is magic, there is no one around... and when you do a numbskull move.... there seems to always be an audience at the 50 yard line. Just part of those who are members of the elite sailing world. I'll have to tell you all the story about what happened with Gary Jobson on the boat we provided while he was being televised by NBC. It happens to us all.

It looks sped up.. Especially on the upwind parts of the video. I just went F-18 sailing today on a basically brand new Capricorn and we were not going nearly that fast and it wasn't due to a lack of wind, trust me! I looked at my GoPro footage already, taken from the same angle too. In this video, their hands move awfully fast (...maybe a little toooo fast) when trimming that main and spin.

Considering the 18m length, a quick visual estimate gives me 15-18 meters/sec. (even if they were sailing directly into the swell that would add a trivial 2-3 m/s to the apparent visual speed) That translates to a hard to-believe 30-35 knots. So I'd agree it's sped up a bit.

TSorovanMHael, I am afraid you might need to redo your little calculation there since the F18 wildcat has an overall length of 18 feet, or 5.46 meters. In your calculation you said 18 meters, which is off by over a factor of 3.

very nice video. using trapeze when there is a little chop, keep your feet apart some and bend your knees a little because it is very bad to lose your footing - also shorten up the trapeze wire line a little bit so you are a little more like riding the boat as opposed to dangling from the mast. a few free tips from an old fattie Hobie 18 sailor ......... hahahaha ...... also, it is not a bad idea to wear a life jacket if you are on the trapeze.

***** what he's playing with is the spinnaker sheet. You always play it out to try and get the most air caught in it. Also (being an F18 sailor myself I've found out the hard way) the spinnakers on Cats are Massive! With no cleat and strong likely gusty winds controlling it is manic...but definatley worth it.

***** ignore me I was looking at the wrong section. It looks like he was either controlling the traveller or mainsheet. Don't know why it was so frantic though the only explanation I can think of is the cleat broke and the wind was overpowering him.
