We loved the movie but my mom said she felt sorry for the little children in the theater because that wolf is nightmare fuel. Again, I’m 26 and haven’t been intimidated by an animated villain since Maleficent. Her introduction terrified me so much, I couldn’t watch Sleeping Beauty fully until I was 16. I think people don’t realize there are spirits behind the things we watch and this wolf embodied the spirit of fear perfectly. Dreamworks hits the nail on the head once again.

This is how you create a great antagonist. He is literally the opposite of Puss. 1st thing death's design of being white, red eyes , and a simple hood contradicts the vibrant orange and fancy design of Puss. Death prefers the sickle, a very simple tool versus Puss who uses a dueling sabre. Also felines and canines are naturally seen as enemies to one another. i'd argue against the simplicity of his weapon. Since that is what highlights how layered he is: His sickle has a nail in the beginning of the blade, where it connects to the handle. That nail allows the blade to curl up into a bladed knuckleduster. Just like how he can fuse the sickles's handles to become a double bladed scythe. He is more than what he originally looked like to Puss, just like how his weapon can BE more that what it originally looked like, and just like HE is more than we assumed

On the last confrontation, just the haunting echo of his whistle filling the whole arena, literally everyone could hear it, it's not just Puss that can. Everyone upon hearing that whistle immediately went on HIGH alert. It means he is real, he isn't just a figment of Puss's imagination, he is something that is real and he exists. Then the shot of him walking through the barrier, and remember, the star was suspended in the air and floating, above the ground at this point. It means he is an otherworldly entity, just materializing when he wants to. Everytime he appears, its just chills up and down my spine.

Well, Death isn't any one person or individual, Death is a force of nature. Although Death can manifest itself in hallucinations (as it did as Puss, Kitty, and Perrito are escaping from Jack Horner's home), it isn’t surprising that it can also physically materialize. The fact that Death had no qualms with killing Puss in front of his ex-lover and childlike friend is very telling as to how cold it is when it pursues its prey.
@hartantoanggoro
Жыл бұрын
Before the final confrontation, everyone except Perrito didn't know how Puss had a secret that caused him run in fear from Death. Kitty sees it as a blatant lie since Death is not real and she knows Puss cannot be trusted, Goldilocks doesn't care for what Puss had done since he supposed to be dead, Perrito knows and remain supportive to Puss endeavor but reminds him that Puss had to treasured his last life. Death doesn't aim for other than Puss since Puss challenge Death with his daredevil attitude and because Death got a grudge for Puss stupidity to throw his lives away without any care at all, Death however purposely barring any of Puss companion to get close since they might get in Death's way and Puss had to face Death by himself. The respect Death's give is the sign of Puss redemption since Puss finally able to see the error of his ways while accept Death as a force that he will meet again when he finally passed away not as a foe but as an old friend.

Don’t think it’s a coincidence Perrito, the domesticated dog, is foiled by Death, a wolf. Both are catalysts for Puss’s growth, if you think about it. Both perform therapy, though in radically different ways. Death was even more direct with Puss’s flaws - he was clearly slighted by Puss’s arrogance, but paying attention you can see the biggest insult was how *wasteful* Puss was. Puss - this “legend” was dysfunctional - lonely - always doomed to a terrible end. Puss himself took so long to realize it, but Death saw it clearly, and never bought into the “legend”. And so Death hounded him, taught him in the only way they knew how. Our traumas and fears are therapeutic - they are the things that give us the reason, the first and last step to discover our flaws, and work to improve them. Such a phenomenal character.

What makes Death such a great antagonist other than his design, voice, and whistle, is the fact that we don't even know his full potential and power. @@DSxGoldSilver oh, I could never agreed more to this after I rewatched the movie with my nephew and niece. My niece was afraid of Death but in the end when Puss wasn't afraid of Death anymore, my niece also wasn't afraid of him anymore. I later asked her what the meaning of this movie was and she said more or less "we can only live once, so we have to use it as best as possible." She's 8. She is the child that they're referring to on their 1 star reviews. And yet she enjoyed and even got the lesson of the movie

@@Blue-Apple-fc9eo oh, abso-fuckng-lutely. We need to stop feed kids with shits. They need actual food that not only tastes really good but also very nutritious. We need to stop giving them stuff like cocomelon and boss baby, and instead give them more stuff like puss in boots 2 and bluey. I just hope that with puss in boots 2 and bluey getting more and more popular, more animation studios will follow both of them, and boy oh boy do I have a very high hope. From the look of it, we might be in the new era of "animation isn't just for brainless" since puss in boots 2 clearly got its inspiration from spiderverse, a movie made by different studio

Something that makes Death stand out among so many antagonists like him, is that Puss never really defeats him; at least, not in the conventional sense. There's no "teamwork saves the day" moment, no final battle that ends with the antagonist's demise or incapacitation. Sure, Puss fights back and manages to get hits on him, but even then it's clear that he can't truly beat him- he says so himself- because Death isn't a powerful tyrant or corrupt mortal to take down. He is a force of nature. The only reason Puss pulls through in the end is because he's learned the movie's core lesson and Death sees this, causing his leave. He is never defeated in typical fashion, but simply chooses to let him go. That is so much more bone chilling (but still leaves a very powerful message.)

Death is so terrifying you almost forget this is a kids movie and you know to some degree you can’t really see him as a villain because he’s doing his job which is to take the souls of the deceased. He only despises Puss because he’s a cat and finds the whole “cats have 9 lives” despicable and Puss wasn’t grateful. That is how you make a villain Make them terrifying enough that the very thought of them alone strikes fear into the heart and give them a purpose that justifies them being evil. Disney is going on a tangent with generational trauma that they’ve lost their edge. (Extra: I like how the wolf always happens to be there where Puss is, stating that Death is everywhere and inescapable)

Just because someone has a sense of nobility doesn't make them not a villain, to be fair. Though, I wouldn't consider Death to be a villain, more of an anti-hero. It doesn't kill anyone, only those that don't take their life seriously. The movie's main villain, I'd say, is Jack Horner.

I can't express how well the drumbeats in his scores work. Our hearts try to sync with the music we listen to, so the uneven rhythm in "The Smell of Fear" really gives you the physical feeling of panic and stress. Your body really doesn't know how to react- and that's exactly what a panic attack feels like for me. The bittersweet payoff in "He's Here for Me" also always makes me bawl. I lost my little doggie companion last year, and he'd often place his head on my thigh when he'd see me in a state of panic. We miss you buddy

In that scene where puss got cut and was terrified, I genuinely felt fear for some reason i really felt like he was about to die, even tho I knew he was obviously gonna survive and that is so telling how good that villian is, I think the huge part of feeling the fear was music and the way they showed puss fear but for me it was mostly the horror like music heart beating and the sound of the blade against the concrete because I've spent a lot of time playing a horror game dead by daylight and that game really makes your heart beat like crazy, each time the player-killer was getting close you could hear quickening heart beat, music very simillar to wolfs and sometimes that blade, I bet it all reminded me of that and that's why I genuinely felt scared of this villian lmao
