Can we talk about how clever the Dark Forest is? How does it protect the wishing star? By convincing people they don't need it Puss wants new lives? the cave of lost souls teaches him he should value the one he has left Goldie wants a family? The old cabin teaches her she already has one Perrito wants to become a therapy dog (even if he didn't plan to make it a wish)? SPOILER! Some foreshadowing for the wolf that I *loved* was that split moment before he appears, a candle goes out, which nods to how the doctor blew out a candle in the scene prior to illustrate to Puss that he lost a life. SPOILERS AHEAD!!! . . . . . I understand why people may say the ending was a bit tacky for showing Far Far Away. But for me, the ending with Puss, Kitty & Perrito going to Far Far Away still makes sense for the story as Puss’ journey/arc throughout the movie was about valuing his last life with the people he loves and cares about. So, him potentially introducing his new friends to his old ones and having the whole package makes sense and adds what he learned. But that's just my interpretation.
@jendoe9436

I did always wonder how Puss’s movie fit in with the Shrek movies. I always assumed the first one was before he was in Far Far Away since he’s on the rouge/bandit sort of side, and assumed this was all before Shrek as well until his first “life flashing” scene. I do like your theory that he left Shrek and company without much of a goodbye, and is now making amends so he can bring everything together. Would be cool to see Fiona and Kitty meet up, and Donkey is for sure going to get Doggie (can’t remember his Spanish name right now 😅) in a lot of fun trouble. Only character I would want to see is Puss’s mama (can’t remember her name either) and get some type of closure on his Netflix series. He had a fling with Dulcinea and the ending had the two riding off together. So did she die along the way? Did they split up? Curious minds want to know 🤔

Puss in boots made only 3 MILLION DOLLARS out of its 90 MILLION BUDGET IN AMERICA. I was the only one in the theatre other than a few kids. I'm so fucking tired of people calling everything animated a kids movie. And of course, Avatar takes away all the attention, making dreamworks more vulnerable for bankruptcy. Puss in boots was released in sweden and it only made 300 DOLLARS. THATS RIGHT. 300 DOLLARS. It's so disgusting how stereotypes of art forms and genres of movies are just completely looked away from and never get the spotlight. Have you seen animated movies from france? Probably not. Japan? Maybe once, if you're not into anime stuff. The world should be putting attention to movies that deserve it. Not the pretty blue people that swim in water. Edit: I'm glad that it's doing way better, over 300 million now, but it probably broke just even compared to the advertising that probably cost it. Especially with the theatre performances costs. I’m sure they’ll make it work out if the same team are doing this and are in their element like this film. Also, while Perrito has the saddest origin story, I really wanted you to mention Kitty’s as well, which may not be more but might be equally sad as well. She had a family who loved her and she loved so much, but one day she did something that they didn’t like with her scratching (scratching is a need for cats not a want) and they suddenly changed, declawing her meaning they amputated the last bone in each toe where her nails grew. This made her hurt so badly it gave her trust issues and inherited a cynical worldview. Kitty plays a role in letting the audience compare how different people respond to a certain circumstance in different ways, and permanently affect them and their lives.

I love this new animation art style that Dreamworks had been doing with The Bad Guys and now Puss in Boots 2. If Kung Fu Panda 4 has a similar style, that would be incredible.

4:07 I love how if you look really close, death is hiding in the shadows in the top left corner, foreshadowing when he says he was there for all of Puss's deaths later in the movie.

The godly amount of effort put into this movie was such an improvement over the first movie. It's honestly beautiful. I always liked Puss since Shrek 2 and this gives me hope and happiness.

One part I like about this movie is how everyone rips the map except Jack. To me, it's basically saying how you don't need a wish to make you happy, how the things you have are enough. Puss realizes that one life is enough to spent time with the ones he love, Kitty realizes she already has people that trust her, Goldilocks realizes she already has a family in front of her, and Perrito never wanted a wish cause he was always fine with the stuff he has. They all accept the stuff they have, except for Jack Horner. He was blinded by his ego to see he had a lot of stuff, yet he only wanted more. He never appreciates the things he have in his life(Shown by him not giving a shit that his employees are dying), all he wants is more, which is why he ended up dying in the thing he desired. This movie is proof that animation isn't kids garbage, it's art.

Dreamworks have had a quality dip recently, but if we look at their backlog, they're THE animation studio that still produces for all ages movies. From Kung-fu Panda, to Simbad, to Megamind. I'm 30, went with my mother, and a great time was had. That's how for all ages this was.

Just saw it today. Absolutely loved it. One of the best movies of the year. Not only is it visually exciting, the themes are so good too. You could sit and think on the events of the film and come away inspired. Damn. I do hope it makes several times it's budget.

Can we also talk about the sick weapon choice for death? Foldable sickles which can become basically a knuckleduster or a cane. Thats absolutely great, and nice that they did not just give him the grim reaper scythe like you would expect.

I was so surprised at the sheer number of extras that straight up die in the movie. The treasure hunter lady who gets turned to gold, the ENTIRE crew of the tiny ship in the bottle Goldilocks smashes, all the bakers dozen, etc. It's funny because all this death surrounds Puss in the metaphorical sense of his own mortality and previous 8 deaths, but also in the literal sense since Jack is so unbothered by losing lackeys. The worldbuilding, humor, and dialogue were top notch and all enhanced by the beautiful art style. Definitely one of the best animated movies Dreamworks has ever produced.

I was so blown away by this movie, this year has been so great for animation in general. Something I really loved was the way that Perdito and Death are kind of opposites of one another which compliments Puss' story really well. Like, Perdito represents positivity and learning to appreciate life, represented through this tiny blue-eyed pup who values people and small wonders. Meanwhile, death is this looming big bad wolf, the complete opposite of Perdito. It's a really cool touch.

I had a whole conversation with my parents and my siblings about how this movie was not made for them. Puss in boots has always been a love letter to shrek and it’s grown up with us. It’s not for them, it’s for us, who’ve grown up with shrek and puss in boots. It isn’t a “kids movie” it’s a kids who grew up loving this movie. To me, it is a beautiful movie in every way because I am able to look through the lens this movie was meant for. Thank you for your time.

This movie was so much better than it had any reason to be. I'd love to see someone make a video essay covering "Movies That Went Hard For No Reason" because this would definitely make the list. There are a few unexpected films like this that shine brightly even though they didn't need to have any effort put into them because their only competition is Illumination films and boring-ass Disney tech demos.

While it lacks the emotional depth of Shrek 2, I truly believe that Puss in Boots' sequel is the best thing to come out from the big green ogre’s entire franchise since its 2004 sequel. On top of that, 2022, in financial terms, might be DreamWorks Animation’s biggest year of dethroning Disney’s Strange World and Pixar’s Lightyear with this, along with The Bad Guys. Here’s to the cat being nominated a second time at the Academy Awards after 11 years.

Movie deals with death loneliness and most of all trust. Fear of death is scary but life with friends is the only way to appreciate what happens. A lonely road is hard and it can be unhealthy. Most of all trusting someone and having people to journey with is life at its fullest
