Unsustainable means that russia cannot go indefinitely like this. It doesn't mean it cannot continue until tomorrow, the next year or even a few years. It does mean that the rate of attrition is higher than the rate of replenishing, whether that is troops, equipment or funds.
@kmg474
Ай бұрын
@fintux Of course, nothing goes on forever but when we keep hearing these headlines of how Russia's latest losses are "unsustainable" it suggests that their defeat or withdrawal is imminent. I hope it is by the way, but I question the accuracy of these headlines. Perhaps they represent wishful thinking more than careful analysis.
@fintux
Ай бұрын
@@kmg474 yeah I guess it is just not really knowing what is the breaking point. Like if you have a stick, it is unsustainable to add more and more torque to it, but you don't really know when it'll snap. It is true that overly optimistic headlines/reporting may end up doing a disservice, so it might be better to really spell out what exactly is meant in this context by "unsustainable". That would be e.g. to state that russia can't match spending with production. Probably one underestimation is about the control that putin's regime has over the people so that they don't know the losses, and even more importantly, the amount of common knowledge is low (by that I mean the information that people know _and_ that they know also others know). That leads to the sense of inability to really do anything as people think they're alone with their views. If people knew how badly things are going and also they knew that others knew, that might lead to some sort of uprising. Now we just have to wait until the terrible state of things becomes so obvious to everyone that you cannot believe others don't notice, too. But of course that process could, and should, be sped up by tightening the sanctions, increasing significantly the military aid to Ukraine and removing the insane restrictions on where Ukrainians can use the long range weapons.

Very confusing - on one hand he says the Afgan war stopped because relatives protested , but he says that current soldiers are prisoners and migrants . There are now high salaries and bonuses which relatives benefit from, so less likely to complain. I think that the high casualties are not going to be as big a problem as he thinks - it's the money to pay for it all is what's going to be the problem. North Korea will sell soldiers and shells for money, and Africans will line up for bonuses. The biggest way to stop the war is for Europe to stop buying Russian oil and gas - not just cut back. As long as Russia has money to spend the war will go on.
@marcm.
Ай бұрын
The missing element is actually time, and as far as those relatives getting financial renumeration, think again... There is a reason why within Russia, the official numbers are significantly lower as far as dead versus missing. If they're missing, they can be termed as deserters... There is no renumeration then. But it's worse than that, there are a lot of families that are not getting renumeration even if everything else would have otherwise have said that they should have, including currently serving soldiers. This is partly because the system is not the way we normally would do it in the West. We look at it in a more modern way. What you have over there is more feudalistic. Essentially the regions involved are the ones who have to pay, and they're not getting renumerated by the federal government... It's as if the king was requesting conscripts from his feudal lords... Obviously it's not exactly that way, and there are federal inductees, but that's not the greatest number, That's mainly on the PMC level
@marcm.
Ай бұрын
Oh I kind of didn't really go into detail about what I meant about time. The missing element is time, essentially it takes time for this type of pressure to build up and actually find an outlet. Remember Putin has made it very much a point of his administrations, to decapitate any leader potential on any group that could possibly go against him. But there are grassroots developments that are currently happening in Russia, including the wives and mothers of missing and dead, as well as other groups that Putin would call dissident. It's still takes time to develop a leadership structure

If the war lasts two more years then Russian storage facilities will likely also be out of tanks in poor condition that take immense work to be refurbished and the only tanks left will be those in the worst condition which very likely are in such terrible shape that they can never be returned to service. @kingmilanovic You're the first other person I've ever seen writing of something which seems extraordinarily obvious to me: I just laugh when I hear all the po-faced explanations for Putain's adventures in Ukraine - deNazification, rebuilding the Russian Empire, preventing Ukraine from joining NATO, keeping Ukraine within Russia's political and economic sphere blah blah blah. Sure, Putin wants and needs nothing more than a chain of semi-functional, grey, corrupt, poor, ex-Soviet - ie crapulous - countries dotted around the borders of Russia (although even that is only a) to avoid his direct neighbours being shining examples of clean Western democracies which just make Russia look bad and b)to insulate Russia from the outside world such that all the shenanigans which go on there - all ultimately orchestrated by Putain - are better hidden/shielded/ignored/excused away. In other words, they're rather prosaic, pragmatic, practical considerations. ... ...no, particularly when we recall that the war started not on the 24th February 2022, but way back in 2014, we see that it is an absolutely direct response to the Ukrainians and their actions centring on Maidan Square. When the Ukrainians' then-President, Victor Yanukovych, refused to sign to law an economic agreement 90% of the country had voted for, Ukrainians erupted in protest, you know all this, resulting (albeit at heavy cost) in Yanukovych's expulsion. Being of course that he was Putain's glove puppet, Putain was both alarmed but most of all, absolutely fuming. In short, like all dictators, he is unaccustomed to - and loathes - dissent. For sure, he saw the political and economic costs - but most of all it was simply blind fury at being personally thwarted. As you wrote with rare perspicacity, this has got frig all to do with the complex and high falutin motives so often heard earnestly and exhaustively discussed. This is about one little insecure, lower middle class, ordinary, small-dicked homunculus with terminal feelings of inadequacy acting out his spiteful, vengeful resentments just like any other bully and coward.....

I guess it’s the only thing that keeping this war going? Recruiting from literally anywhere but Russia’s main cities, especially Moscow and St Petersburg? I’m old enough to remember the mothers of those 50,000 Afghan casualties bringing that war to an end, despite the potential for savage reprisals from the Soviet state. And it was those losses that not only made their Afghan campaign unsustainable, but is viewed by historians as being the single biggest contributing factor to the fall of Communism. There’s nothing so potent in politics as a grieving mother with nothing left to lose. The optics of rounding them up look really bad, and they simply will not stop protesting unless they’re rounded up, which merely creates more angry mothers. So, how long can Putin put off a mass call up? He’s been acting so desperate lately that it seems he’s willing to do anything except call up domestic manpower.

I think the Ukrainian strategy is a pretty sound one- trade minuscule amounts of ground for thousands and thousands of dead Russians, all the while using these human meatwave attacks as an opportunity to 1) sharpen their own soldiers’ skills and gain valuable combat experience; and 2) make sure that the entire Russian field army is devoid of combat experience because anyone who’s been in combat has ended up dead. They can essentially do this for several years before the amount of territory they give up would begin to be strategically devastating. Meanwhile, how many body bags will come back to Russian mothers, wives, sisters, brothers, fathers, etc, before the sheer scale of the death overwhelms them and forces SOMEthing- anything- to change…. I suppose the question is, will that happen before the amount of territory Ukraine gives up is unacceptable to them, or will it happen after.

It's strange that Ukraine had the manpower problem All this analysts never explain where Russia is losing all these soldiers Russia bombs Ukraine until they flee then advance that is why the advance is slow to save troops but somehow these loons claim thousands of loses

3:08 it's interesting that the analysis tracks with what I've seen. With this one exception, and it has nothing to do with that what he's saying is wrong, it's actually correct, but what is missing is time. Putin doesn't have more control than the Soviet system had, it's instead that he hasn't had enough time for it to become an issue... As well as the fact that he unlike the Soviet system has made sure that none of the more politically powerful areas / regions of Russia are impacted as of yet... But it's coming, I agree with him there

And when he said Russia pulled out of Afghanistan because the mother's kept seeing body bags coming back so they pressured the Kremlin to pull out , I think that's not happening get because Putin is just leaving his soldiers bodies on the battlefield and not bringing them home this is horrible to say but I think it's the truth that at the moment most of those mothers still think their son is alive somewhere in Ukraine because they haven't heard or seen their sons so they think they're still fighting where as in reality her son has been dead in a field for weeks of months and they haven't been brought home and they are still registered as fighting but as soon as the true numbers come out which will happen at some point then we'll see a big uprising of mothers and families to bring them home
