It's about putting on the Ritz. That's it. Dolling up, going out, having a time of it.

I submit that people in this era had a greater understanding of musicality for the simple reason that you could not hide an inability to make rhythm , rime , and harmony without fancy electronic gadgetry. I have had several experiences of seeing entertainers who liked live, and it was altogether apparent that with sound engineering in the studio they couldn't sing a note.

You have to put artistic works in the context of their times... I'm sure if Lady Gaga tried to perform her act in 1930 she'd be in jail...

Warner Bros. bought the Brunswick label three months after this was recorded, 'MrX' (in April 1930). However, because of worsening economic conditions and the bottom falling out of the "screen musical" boom [which the studio had hoped to exploit via their acquisition of Brunswick], they practically handed it over to American Record Corp. by the end of 1931- who, in turn, sold it and their affiliated labels to CBS in 1938.

@DajaWaja I think he is singing about the rich getting out of their stuck up life style and letting lose at the "Cotton Club" in Harlem.

What's the style of this music ? It has a very high BPM, around 190 BPM, and often has Toms, double bass and horns ... It's not swing, not jive, not jazz, not boogie, can't find the name of the style ...

The term is "highbrows". It means rich, sophisticated people. Or posh and stuck up. I don't know how you can speak the English language and never have heard this word. Or what the heck is a "high brown". It sounds like something to eat with eggs. I've never heard of anyone calling black folks "browns". Educate yourself. Your ignorance is showing.

@@alishasalazar2897 Puttin' On The Ritz Lyrics Have you seen the well-to-do Upon Lennox Avenue On that famous thoroughfare With their noses in the air High hats and narrow collars White spats and fifteen dollars Spending every dime For a wonderful time If you're blue And you don't know where to go to Why don't you go where Harlem sits Puttin' on the Ritz Spangled Gowns upon the bevy of High browns from down the levy All misfits Puttin' on the Ritz Lyrics by Irving Berlin

@kallemick He's not entirely wrong. However, I don't think it was meant to be racist or it would be more obvious and hateful. In other words, you'd know it was racist if it were. At worst, it might be considered non-PC but that would be overreacting. Back in 1929, no one would have batted an eye. If someone wrote this in 2011, there might be a problem. Either way, it's more about culture and the classes than race anyhow.
